Few miles today. Legs felt fantastic. Wet, gritty ride, but loads of fun.
Pre-ride sexy shot:

Seeing that old school Zefal pump brought back some good memories (haha, if you can say patching and pumping up tubes is preferable to using CO2 cartridges).

I still have mine sitting in my garage that used to fit under the top tube of a Lemond. I keep thinking I'll get another ride where I can use it. LOL.

Swapped the 650b x 47mm on my Space Horse for 700c x 40mm, took them for a 17 mile ride today and am quite pleased. Suppose I'll swap back and forth as needed. Bike is largely dialed in, just needs a few minor tweaks incl handlebars.

We are in the midst of The Great Pollening of 2025, this is not dirt/gravel dust but pollen. I should have gotten pix of the footsteps in the pollen, unreal!

I’ve been wanting to dip my toe in the 650b world. What’s a decent wheelset (brand, website, etc) for some classic road-oriented wheels? Seems like everything I look at is geared towards new-tangled mountain bikes. I just want a chrome hub and rim. Don’t need aero spokes and all that jazz. 2x or 3x cross pattern is fine. Would love any recommendations!

I wish I could help you with that, but tbh I'm not up to speed on everything available. Seems the 650b is targeted at mtb and gravel to support the popular wider tires, while I rarely see anything road-specific I bet there are wheels out there. A quick search for "road-specific 650b wheels" turned up a few options.

I'd call around, you'll certainly be able to find a place to build you what you want, you just aren't going to see much of that advertised. Nearly everyone wants carbon rims (they really are that good) and disc brakes

Rising old steel, I can’t play in the carbon/disc world haha. I totally get it, but I’m a Luddite! I guess find a local wheelbuilder or just try to figure out how to do it myself.

Look at Hunt and see if they have what you are looking for.

Been weaksauce on any riding outside of quick rides for sunset after work. I’ve been busy as heck at work.

Got out to do some mine development recon. See what these clowns are hiding back there. 😂😂

Looks like you got shut down at a gate on mile 11 there haha

I really have no idea wtf is wrong with me, but I did another 17mi ride then an 8mi ride on the 700x40 and both rides felt like pedaling through pudding. Put the 650b's back on, they roll so well in comparison. I guess the newness and confirmation bias muddied things for me.

Both sets of wheels are relatively new: the stock wheels have All-City branded hubs and ~250mi, the 700c's came from a new Spesh Tarmac with unbranded hubs (Axis?) and I've put around 100mi on them (PO did not ride them). The 700c's were not dragging the brakes, so that's not an issue. I tried different pressures but nothing seemed to help. Perhaps it's just the tires? I suspect the Schwalbe G-One All-Round might be a dog, but the Tufo is supposed to be a very fast roller. Can't believe the Spesh/DTSwiss are that bad as they came off a decent bike?

Anyway, the 650b Teravail Washburns work for me: overkill for my riding, but they ride and feel great. I'll stick with them.

What tires are you comparing? That’s going to have a pretty huge impact.

Which dt swiss hubs? I’ve had fantastic luck with everything from dt180’s to dt370’s on a bunch of different bikes.

The tires are: 650b x 47mm Teravail Washburn Durable. The 700c x 40mm's are a Schwalbe G-One All-Round and a Tufo Thundero (the light casing). Both sets are setup tubeless with 3oz sealant.

I don't have DTSwiss hubs, just the 700c R470 wheels on unbranded hubs. Again, they came off a brand new Specialized Tarmac 7 (or 8, I dunno) - which made me think Axis hubs, since Spesh used them frequently.

The 700c's all set up are somewhat lighter, but again they don't roll nearly as well as the 650b's. Tried different pressures from 28psi to 42psi on the 700c's; on the 650b's I'm sitting at 32/f and 36/r; on all-dirt rides, I go to 28 and 32 for comfort.

(FWIW I swapped in another 650b Washburn on my other bike and that made a huge positive difference vs the WTB tire I was running. Maybe it is just the tires?)
