Unlikely you have damaged the starter - It can happen but I doubt it has in this case. Tapping the end of it often works a gem - you can do this before you crank it over. - I used to keep a mallett in my 76 when the starter was on its way out.
When you first started fuel wan't getting to the filter - Is it now? If it is good - Check the plugs - pull one out and keep it connected - hold it close to the engine block - you need some one to turn her over - look for the spark jumping from the pug to the block - Again if yes you have it.
Keep at it dude - you can get this part!!!!
