Detroit train yard
Not quite, I guess there are not too many train geeks on here. Those pictures were taken by me at Check point 502 in the Indiana Harbor complex, a really interesting place. Lots of steel!

Back to land cruisers! Things have been super slow as of late. I finally received the parts to finish my custom oil pan, I should have it finished within a week or so. Basically its a aluminum puzzle that needs to be welded together.

The machine work turned out ok, there are some questionable areas that I will keep my eye on when it comes time to test for leeks.

I have high expectations for this thing, it better work.

I also have spent lots of time doing the wiring. This has been rather tedious, I needed to do lots of cutting, extending and splicing. Not very photo worthy stuff. I was able to pull the required power from the land cruiser oem connectors. There is a need for a constant 12 volts as well as a switched 12 volts. Also I needed power for the tach converter box.

Ill take some pics of the new harness when its all wrapped up with split loom. I also took this opportunity to replace the h20 temp sensor connector.

The R2.8 does not have a place for the 1FZ temp sensor that drives the Dash gauge so a solution had to be found. I took a factory plastic part off the engine that supplies warm water to the heater core and designed a replacement. Axis industries sells something like this but with the wrong thread, this has the correct M16x1.5 thread for the factory sensor to be used without a stupid adapter fitting.

I guess that is all I have for now, maybe i'll have it running by the end of the month...

Very nice! Those pics of the oil pan puzzle make my wallet hurt...

Does anyone know what the largest CCA battery that will fit without modifications in the FZJ80 battery box? I think the R2.8 calls for atleast 850 CCA.

You can drop a group 31 in. It will be snug for sure but people do it all the time. Not sure what brand you're going to use but the group 34 that I have from Odyssey has 850 CCA. 34R-PC1500T

It's a smaller battery but it cranks like no bodies business. Plus it's about 30 pounds lighter than a group 31.

I run a type 31 1000 CCA DEKA

Yup, group 31 is snug but fits. Don't know CCAs, but I'd imagine there are lots available in the 31 size...

Wow well I guess the oil pan is tougher now, did you go 6061 or 7075-T7

I am loving this thread. Did you really design and CNC that whole pan? I didn't know there was anyone so gangster on this site. :smokin:
Don't know if I already asked, but you're an engineer living in Michigan, which OEM do you work for?

Thanks for the battery info, can anyone take a few pictures of a group 31 battery installed?

As for the brand I have had good luck with Duracell, got a pair on my 24 valve and she fires right up. The stuff from Autozone type stores never last more than 12-18 months, absolute junk.

I just finished the install on this battery. I don't know if other grope 31 battery are smaller, but I had to notch the inside rear drivers side corner. Not much about 1/4" x 2" long piece. On the passenger side there are two about 1/2" x 1/2" 1/4" tall bumps that hold the battery away from the side of the box, maybe if you let the battery sit on top of those bumps you can fit a group 31 with out modifying the Box. I prefer the battery sit down flat in the box the notch was minimal. I also used Land Cruiser Phil’s battery tie down / fusible link kit although I modified every part of it. Here's a pick of the beefed up hold downs. I also really like the extra posts fore the winch cables.

My group 31 (Die Hard Platinum 31M) fit without mod to the OEM box, but I did have to modify some plastic fins on the battery itself (totally external and superficial) and also lengthen the stock tie-down bar.

pictures or it didn't happen

What about the largest battery than can fit without modifications to the tie down bar? Some mods really annoy me for some reason.

How about this?

It seems that using the stock tie downs will basically constrain you to use the original group size. If I could relocate my windshield washer bottle I could run two batteries, but the FJ80 bottle wont fit thanks to my placement of the ECM. So I shot myself in the foot on that.

Perhaps it is all for nothing, like I am going to drive a rust free California 80 series in a Michigan winter and watch it rust out in two years. That is what they make f150's for.

LOL all that beautiful custom work to get a Cummins R2 in a Toyota Land Cruiser. But whatever you do don't modify the battery box or hold down just saying.
The Odyssey M31 has nearly twice the cold cranking amps that the Duracell battery your suggestion has. Again just saying
