So are you going to step up and do the hard trail next year? lol! There are a lot harder than that up there...

Yeah I’d definitely give it a shot, both my lockers were acting up at the very beginning of the 2nd day (you can see them struggling to stay locked in the video before I realized what was happening) so that kind of put a damper on the trail choice later

Rear door replaced. And also put a “fresh” hood on. My last one was dented on the front lip from rolling downhill into @thatcabledude Jerry can mount when parallel parked in Telluride, and dented from
from the guy with the desert camo 80 (can’t remember his Mud name) backing into me with a 4x4labs berry can mount in Montrose the next day

Next project coming soon, ditching this Np203 / splitcase, and blackbox + HF2a going in!! Very excited about this. Just need to free up a shop bay for a few weeks again which is the hard part.

I did decide I am going to use some 10% underdrive high-range gears in the transfer to effectively give myself 4.56’s in high range (I have 4.11 in axles still) since I have to install a part-time and swap the input shaft/gear in the transfer anyways.
It would be nice to make 2nd gear starts a bit easier on the street, and I am hoping to pick up some highway MPG back. When I had 35’s I used to get 15-16mph very consistently at 80mph, since I put 37’s on that has tanked to 10 flat. I know the weight/aero of the bigger tires is a huge factory but it feels like I am lugging the engine the bit at those speeds.

Had a few hours and a clear bay today so threw in another pair of U-Joints into another 4runner/GX driveshaft, but OEM this time (I shook a set of cheap ones to death on the drive back from Fall Crawl last month).
Also filmed a quick ramble /update/ show and tell of what I broke in the front diff

I also found an even bigger but shorter air filter from K&N that fits better. This thing is gigantic
Next up I would need to wire the GM pressure switch to my aux fan relay and see if that all works. I am getting really high AC pressures and it’s hindering performance.

I was looking back through the thread and realized I never uploaded any pics from my Rubicon trip in 2023!

1. Hwy 50 from Colorado. I did this instead of SLC/I80 like I did in 2020 and it was a much more enjoyable drive. I drove from Ouray (SAS event) to Reno in one shot, stayed at a hotel and the next morning I checked over the truck and then drove to Tahoe City (trailhead) and got on the trail that evening.
Much more relaxed pace when compared to my 2020 trip where I drove straight from Ouray to the Tahoe trailhead (1000 mile 16-17 hr drive). Basically took an extra day. Well worth it.

“Observation Rock/Lookout” or whatever it is called. Right before you go down Cadillac hill if going in from the east

Not that anyone cares but some notes to log.

So I definitely broke something in my front ARB locker at Fall Crawl last year. In 4WD/hubs locked I get 100% engagement from front right all the time, and zero/nothing/nada from front left.. with the locker unlocked. with locker "on" I get no change and lots of air hissing out the breather hose.

Need to do something before ONSC Relic Run next weekend.

Don't really want to spend the cash for a new locker that I am going to use once a year right now.. still have the Grizzly/Detroit I took out of the rear in Spring 2024 when I put the ARB's in.
I actually didn't really mind the non-selectable in the front since I have the ram-assist and part-time. Probably just going to put that in the front and be done. The ARB I put in the front I got used for $300 I think so I'm not super upset about it.

it's cool to get updates. Bummer on the locker.
See you at relic run! My 62 still is in progress but I'll be there with the 100. Fixed my front diff that was broken at fall crawl so hoping to keep that intact this go round lol

Matt are you still running a power steering pump (type 2 or CBR?) from a late model Duramax pickup? Gathering parts to install hydroboost on my 80 and I need a pump upgrade. Trying to decide if I should keep it simple and just get one of these upgraded P-pump pumps PSC sells, or start from scratch with one of these newer style pumps.

Yes, I have not touched any of that since then (I think 2019 ish?) It's been working very well, although since then I've found a few other options that would be a lot easier if I was doing it again. (GM 86564079 with associated pulley). I actually do have a small leak in the area so maybe I should start collecting parts to update.

The big reason I went that way was I wanted to use the remote reservoir since I have the hydroboost and I knew I would do ram assist so I wanted a lot of fluid capacity.

Major ADD but I have also been considering going to LS3 accesory drive to gain room for a big A2A intercooler.

I think if I were in your shoes and just doing hydroboost I would probably just get a GM 84996211 and be done. That being said I am not as big of a fan of hydroboost as I used to be, new OEM 80 boosters are still available and if yours is original you will notice an improvment just from replacing it.

What Fluid do you recommend running in the GM 84996211, I can't get mine to stop making noise, I have bled it several times, wondering if I am using the wrong fluid.
We just run whatever the Dex fluid we have to run for A440f/A343f transmissions in everything since we keep it on hand. No issues. Might just have a bad pump. It happens.

Get that box together so you can make it next week. I would swap the detroit to the rear and the ARB in the front, but that is just me. I have had that set up in most of my rigs for over 20 years. I put air lockers in my 40 due to short wheelbase. Now that it is longer, I would go back to detroit or a grizzly, they just work.

since so much of my driving is on the street I like the open rear. I actually really like the front locked / rear open offroad, I can really tell a difference with the front staying dug in and rear kind of steering like a trailer. With the rear locked I feel it push away from things when turning up and into obstacles. Like understeer. Pretty much all my wheeling is F/R locker stuff anyways

Well, I tore it apart last night, and I definitely broke the ARB.
I also apparently am starting to lose my memory, as I sold the Grizzly locker I thought I had on the shelf last year.
I also assumed I would have another complete fine-spline 4.11 third member on the shelf, which was not true. Fortunately, one of my guys has one from an FJ62 with a lunchbox locker at his house, so I'll drop that in for this upcoming weekend.

I think I'll just buy a new ARB and put it in before the next big trip since already did the wiring and plumbing for it.

Doing some testing of a new product, I've had these Trail Gear hub lock nut setups forever and always gripped about the tiny M3 screws and the alignment tab being too narrow to properly fit the groove in the spindle. So I made my own kit with some improvments, M4 screw (OEM Toyota with integrated lock washer), and properly fit retaining ring.
