I removed the grill right in front of the windshield on the cowl. There is a black duct that is blocked off. All around it were years worth of accumulation of leaves and pine needles. I cleaned it all out. But why is the duct blocked off? Is yours blocked off? What's the deal? How's this supposed to be?

Funny, I just posted a thread on the need for a new seal. That duct is a fresh air duct that is normally activated by a push/pull knob under the dash (near the middle). There are two nuts that hold that cover on and a seal around the cover. When you pull the knob the cover opens, push it, it closes. There are (should be) two drain tubes running into the cab of the truck from either side of that trough that are a supple rubber. They continue to outside the truck into the engine compartment to get rid of water.

I just had my louvers and vent cover powder coated black and have been looking for a seal since mine was trashed and they are difficult to get from Toyota but CDan may have them (have not checked yet)

Here is a link to the other thread:

On my 69 that I use to have the black lid in the picture flipped up to let air into the cab. There was a knob that you pulled or pushed that operated the lid. The knob was located (I think) below the dash just left of the heater around the same spot as the vacuum operated 4X4 knob, low range lever.

They stopped making functioning Top vents in the late 77 or so.....
It appears that your Top vent damper is in the open position as long as you have #75 & #76 are in working order it should work,If not you may have to take it apart and clean up all the parts little rust preventive paint on the damper put a new gasket on it ;)
my 66 was in worst condition works well now I replaced all screws, bolts & nuts with SS as well  good luck Dusty 66

Hmm so thats the knob I'm missing next to my vacuum 4x4. Thanks for the heads up.

The vents stopped working with the new heater style with the 74 models. Then they were just sealed close with two drain holes. Somewhere in the mid seventies the drain tubes were changed from molded hoses that went thru the cowl to straight heater hose that drain thru transmission cover. I assume the vent still funtioned in non USA cruiser that didn't have heaters. Some time during the 77 model year Toyota did away with them completely.

It took a while, but I finally figured this thing out. The dash knob moves the black cover up and down. Up = vent open. Down = vent closed. I used wd40 on it and I got it to work. It is not a hinged door. It moves straight upwards and downwards. Interesting design.

Those drain tubes are another matter. Mine are dry and cracked and rotted. I have to replace them for sure.

Bringing an old post back to life....

I have read this one and others, and did not find the answer to my question so I thought I would had to this post.

If in 77 Toyota did away with the cowl vent why did Toyota produce a vent gasket for 77-79 and will that gasket work on the older models pre 74' ; is the 77-79 for none US models?

I will know soon enough as I have a 77-79 gasket coming, but was curious if anyone else ran into this....and if it worked for them?

Guessing they made a gasket was still operation in markets that didn't have heaters. Let us know if it works on earlier years. If it's only listed as 77-79 it probably different. May be better than nothing and something that could be modified. Since a front heater was standard starting in 66 and the dummy vent went away in 77 most here have never seen a 77-79 with a operational vent. I know I haven't.

Cowl vent Gaskets

I got the Gaskets today, and here is what I got, they seem a little small for the vent, but stretch out ok, could have shrunk over the years?

I have never seen a new one and mine was too far gone to tell if these are the correct ones? look at the photos and let me know if it is correct.....
