I agree, but if you look at the parts catalog, it is there, this part number is listed for 77-79, All i want to know is this the correct gasket, dose is look like the right one??? I have a 75 with the none operative cowl, that is my future project and not planning on changing the cowl, but I am working on a 74 frame with a 65 Tub and purchase this Gasket for a 77-79???? to work on that Tub , I want to use the cowl vent, and I haven't been able to find the correct seal, until now maybe.....it looks like a good tight fit, any comment???

Maybe a question for Cdan??

It's not an EXACT replacement as the OEM was basically a plastic/vinyl cover over top of high density foam. However it looks like it fits correctly and should do the job. Great find for sure! I am going to order one to see if they have any left...

Well............ do the 78 and newer 40's not have a cowl vent at all? Just the side vents that pop open?

In 66 a heater was standard in the US market and not a option. With the 74 model the heater had a vent on top which could draw outside air from the louver on the passenger's side. This replaced the center cowl vent. Like was mention it wasn't until 78 when Toyota did away with cowl opening in the center on models with a factory heater.

1/75 to 9/77 had a non-operative cowl vent; basically just a water collector.

SOR has the non-vented stainless cover for it back in stock for $40.

Need to included the 74 model which also did not have a operational vent in the cowl. But any cruiser mid 65 thru the 77 model could use this if they aren't using the vent. Besides the vent leaking the pre 74 have the drain line that go thru the firewall. Which isn't the easiest to replace or cheapest if you want to use molded rubber hoses.

I just sent CDAN a PM asking if he could get that part number. It does show up at http://www.amayama.com/ just key in 55881-90300 in the search field. I posted an inquiry to them also to see if it's actually available. Will post back here when I hear something else.

Tanker120: Did you order that through a local dealer? If so who was it and do they take web orders? :D

I got the gaskets from Man a Fre Clearance site, I don't know how many are left, PM me know if you don't get one Coolerman-they are not available through Toyota here in the USA as far as I can see, but maybe at amayama, I know that amayama could not get the older one- The packaging from Man A Fre is pretty old, so it looks like something they had in a box for several years.

Great info!

OK I placed an order with Man-a-Fre. it went all the way through so I guess they may have another in stock. We will see...

I did the same so will see what happens. Went all the way thru but I didn't just order one. I have a 68/70/73 all with this vent. I would be surprised if they are able to fill the order. Guessing their inventory system doesn't know how many are in stock and until orders come in that can't be filled with the item be deleted. But it's worth a try. I can see items like this is where Marv (RIP) will really be missed. If you were looking for something that was not a simple OEM part Marv was who you really needed to talk to at SOR.

Yeah, I don't expect to get it though I did get a confirmation email from their automated order system. Hell maybe they have 25 of them, thought they would never sell them, so put them on sale! We might get lucky... Maybe I can re-sell mine next year and retire...

I might be gathering this information in a convoluted kind of way , but my OCT. ''76'' tub does not have a cowl vent.

That implies that the cowl has been replaced with one from a later model, or it has a cover welded over it. Take a look underneath.

I am going to put one on ebay, for .99 no reserve and see were it goes.....when I bought mine, I picked up a few extra, some or pretty stiff and others are in nice shape. Al said they found a box of them, don't know how many in a box 10, 20??? Don't think they will last long though..

Toyota made FJ40s for many different markets. My guess is until the 80 model Toyota was still installing operational vents in the FJ40 without heaters. 77 was the first model that came with the vent completely gone in heater equipped FJ40s and the other markets that didn't have a heater there was some kind of design chance. Reason the vent gasket looks like it may be a little smaller.

Edit: it looks like a old quote of mine when I still thought 78 was when the cowl vent opening disappeared. I now know it was the 77 model which is what a Oct 76 would be a 77 model.

You need to sell what ever your going now. Coolerman has already claimed next year so he can retire.
