I got the confirmation email from Man-a-Fre at 2:22 PM EST. This morning there is no, "Sorry we are out of stock" email so maybe mine was the last one they had. Crossing fingers...

I did get a reply E-Mail from Amayama

Hello,

Unfortunately the requested part is no longer available.

Regards,
George

Hmmm might get to retire after all!

I just wanted one.

Curious were you planning on drilling out the welds on the 76 you have listed and making a operational on that one. Never thought of trying that on my 76.

I haven't received any sorry email either but I did order more than one so I may not get a full order which means I would have to decided which one gets one first then second.... I think there is a thread or two about conditioning old rubber. Probably do that first since these are NOS which sounds like have been around for many years. That is if I get any at all.:meh:

Nope, No weld marks. Inside , or out. Tub and Cowl appear to be original to each other.

If your tub is from a 10/76 it would be a 77 model not a 76 model. 77 model did not get the dummy vent. Did you get the front doors and hard top with the tub? Doors would of had three fixed nuts for the side mirror instead of using the hinge like the 68-76 models. Hard top would of had the vent window and bracket to mount the lower section of the seat belt.

Living in the Past, I went to buy the hard top , after I got there , I saw the tub and bought that also. The guy had taken the entire ''40'' apart. I came home with a lot of oem steel ( sorry, no doors). I did take a couple pics, tub before, the cowl, and inside hardtop, which I have yet to start work on. Thanks.

OK finally got the email from Man-a-Fre... :frown:

Dear Mr. Baker,
I am so sorry but we have sold out of the items you are purchasing. We had so many people order over the weekend and we could not fill all of the orders. Again very sorry.

LAURA COLEBANK

So whomever ordered 10 of them PM me, I'll buy one if it's not too expensive compared to what they were selling them for... :grinpimp:

Hey guys, Zags used some of this on his build and I copied him and used it on my 69. Their part #8507K15 was enough to do 2 vents. http://www.mcmaster.com/#catalog/119/3767/=qs0bda

Yesterday was of these days that nothing seemed to go right. I avoided looking at my email because I knew I would be getting the man-a-free sorry email. Looked last night and sure enough it was there.:bang:

But to be honest not sure the McMaster-Carr isn't a better option. I have no easy way to check any right now but I believe the studs that hold the damper aren't that long. The gasket that was being sold by man-a-free would restrict air flow unless you used a couple of nuts and washer on the studs to move the damper higher. Great if the studs are long enough because the gasket would seal better. But if it's can't be moved higher on the stud the area when open with be smaller reducing the amount of air it will let in. We've never seen the redesigned 77-79 operational vent so don't know what it look like. Until I do a inventory of what I all have I'm wait to order from McMaster-Carr. I know I stripped at least one of these setups complete as a spare and have a few grill covers one being chromed:rolleyes:. May have a few usable damper plates as well. These are in some crates I haven't been able to get to for years. I stripped a lot of parts from 40s back in the eighties and nineties to use when I retire to use either on projects or fund my retirement.:meh:

Nah. I was going ot get a cover plate from SOR to keep the rain out.

I have the idea kicking around in my head to make a SOR plate into a storage box that would be held down into that space with something like a big air cleaner wingnut. (?) It would be used to store stuff that was not often accessed like a larger first aid kit, tire plug kit, survival blanket, extra matches, maybe some survival food, etc.

Here in the AZ desert that probably wouldn't work. I don't leave much of anything but tools in my cruisers. Everything else would probably be dry rotted if I ever needed.:bang: The tool box under the pre 73s offered a lot more room to store things. I always like it because with the top off you had a place to keep things safe from honest people.

I did the same so will see what happens. Went all the way thru but I didn't just order one. I have a 68/70/73 all with this vent. I would be surprised if they are able to fill the order. Guessing their inventory system doesn't know how many are in stock and until orders come in that can't be filled with the item be deleted. But it's worth a try. I can see items like this is where Marv (RIP) will really be missed. If you were looking for something that was not a simple OEM part Marv was who you really needed to talk to at SOR.

Bumping an old thread. I'm in the final stages of recreating the 55881-60010 cowl vent gasket but need some feed back from you guys, including @Coolerman and @Fast Eddy. There was an earlier comment that if the gasket is too thick it will block airflow. How much does the cowl move up and down? Is it better for the gasket to be on the thinner or thicker side? Does one side of the vent need a thicker gasket vs. the other, or are both sides the same? One of the photos I saw of the later gasket appears to be thicker on one side than the other. However, I'm aiming this gasket for the '72 and earlier cars that actually have a working vent.

Attached are some photos of what it looks like now. The thickness will be adjusted based on feedback. Thanks.

dude. i just bought McMaster Carr 8507K15 to make this! :(

IIRC. when installing the main assembly there is some adjustment that allows you to change how high the vent sits in the closed and open position. but not much. if you don't have a truck available mine is disassembled and ready for a test piece....

I've got two. my 1971 has a vent :) and it functions...

That's one sweet looking truck! Given you have yours apart, I think it does make for an ideal test piece.

Let me first gather some feedback on thickness, and try to get it as close to "right" as possible. With a truck like that, I don't think you want to glue on some McMaster weatherstrip.

I think it's great that you try to keep your vent functional. It's one of the charms of the earlier trucks. Given the drain hoses are still available, this gasket will make it possible for anyone to restore the vent.

That's #3?

My oldest rig is a '76. It's all welded up inside, by Toyoda-san. What I would be interested in would be a top cover, #1, like SOR used to have that was all one piece, so water couldn't get inside.

Yes, this is #3.
It's kind of a bummer that you have a cowl vent that doesn't vent :(.
