You need to post side by side pics before and after, you have done a fantastic job of bringing that truck back from "farmall" stage..... Great work!

Just an update...

Put in a new remflex manifold gasket set and media blasted the manifolds while apart. They are now bolted back in and should not have any more exhaust leak. Plan on taking it to the muffler shop soon and having the exhaust routed inside the skid plate like factory. I have the hood and DS fender off right now to get this work done and have been looking high and low for a minitruck steering box to do my power steering while it is apart. I have the wdorry brackets ready to go.

Finished putting in the new clutch today. Did a new oil pan gasket and rear main seal while there. Avoided a lot of trouble by reading a lot of threads before starting this. Thanks to a lot of you guys for posting your experiences.

Upholstery shop has my factory front seats and a Dodge Raider fold and tumble seat that I bought. They are getting recovered and I have sand blasted and painted all the corresponding brackets.

Just as soon as I get it all back together and drive it to make sure it was fixed right, I will pull it back in the shop and put on my new to me Skyjacker 4" lift with all new bushings and Bilstein 5125's. When I get that done, I will post some new pics.

It is Spring and I cant wait to get this rig back on the road!!! These next 6 months is what I bought this thing for.

I dig everything about your 40. Love the paint, really like the gray wheels( you go t me wanting some), most of all, I dig the fact you are turning out a SWEET rig without going the $SPENDY$ route.

steering

I have a scout steering set up that I will not have time to install before I leave the country and ship my 71 out on the boat---if you consider that a viable install for yours let me know and I will work out a very good deal for you

Thought I'd ask before I post it up in the classifieds:cheers:

Finally got my seats back !!!! I have been waiting patiently for my friend to finish them. He did them as a favor so I just had to wait.

While waiting, I detailed the interior some and installed my skyjacker 4" lift with bilsteins.

Still looking for a mini-truck steering box if anyone has a lead on a good one for reasonable money. Drop me a pm if you know of one.

My next project will be going to the muffler shop for new exhaust. The truck is running great but the exhaust pipe completely broke in half this afternoon.

Those seats look pretty darn nice, and I like the way your friend matched the back seat...looks like it was worth the wait

What rear seat is that?

BTW...your cruiser no longer looks like it did the day you got it...looking good

Cool rig man. Just came across your thread for the first time. I like the flat paint too. I am in the middle of a "rattle-can resto" as well. How's that lift working out? Do you mind telling us how much the skyjacker/bilsteins set you back?

The rear seat came out of a 87 or 88 Dodge Raider. I did the research here on MUD, then found one on craigslist with retractable seatbelts for $40. It folds and tumbles and fills the 40" of space between the wheel wells nicely.

Thanks for the compliments. I bought the springs and u-bolts for $150 and spent another $50 on new skyjacker bushings. I drove my comp'ny car to Houston to pick them up so "free shipping".

I caught the bilsteins on sale for $70.?? a piece but they were buy 3 get 1 free. I think it was $210 because there was no sales tax and free shipping. So I guess I have between $400 and $500 in the lift and shocks.

Looks dang good man. Careful, looks like those rear shackles could invert at any second...

man o man, talk about the ugly duck transformation . that is lookin great, nice job.:cheers:

Nice truck ! !

I also really like the Matt colors

My next rebuild project is a 1983 FJ40 LX that is still swimming from Aussie to ZA - but once it arrives I'm pulling it appart and painting it Matt Gunmetal Gray the same shade as the ICON

Looking good! I think you have "done the most with the least" that I have ever seen!

Your Skyjackers look pretty new and are probably stiff as a board, but how do you like the ride with the Bilsteins?

I have the same lift - came on the truck and has Warn Black Diamond shocks. It is STIFF. I have been thinking that it is mostly the shocks and am about to take the plunge into some Bilsteins.

FWIW, remove the bottom leaf from the rear springs for a while - it will help break them in and will improve that shackle angle. Mine were just like that when I first got the truck together. Additionally, I had to add shims to the front springs to get the caster right. It darted all over the place at first.

I was told that the skyjacker springs are new. The mudder I bought them from said they had never been installed, but had been laying around for several years. I was actually hoping they were used so they would be a little more relaxed. I drove it yesterday about 20 miles ( before my exhaust pipe came apart) and the ride was stiffer than factory but not as bad as I expected.

I have not extended the brake lines yet but will this week. When that is done I am going to park it in a ditch flexed out for a couple days in both directions to see if I can loosen the springs up a little. If that doesn't work I may try removing the bottom spring on the rear. I may end up needing shims in the front but everything I read said that I might not since I have the factory shackles.

Thanks again everyone for the encouraging words.

Copenhagen1, Does the rear seat happen to have three seat belts, or just two? I'm looking for a seat that has three for my three kids. I was thinking about making a third row mini van seat work, but that is going to require some cutting and fabing the rear finder wells.
Your 40 looks good by the way, nice work.

Mike

can you put up a picture of the rear seat mounting with hardware & with the seat folded & tumbled?

Seat is not mounted yet. I just set it in there for the pictures for now. I am going to try to have it mounted within a week or so.

what did you do for reenforcements for the mounting of the rear seat?

The seat will have 4 bolts to the floor. The front two holes in the seat frame are just fractions away from the two large existing bolts that hold your tub to your frame. I haven't done it yet, but I think I can slightly enlarge the holes in the seat frame to make those two body bolts work.
In the rear two holes on the seat frame, I will have to drill holes in my floor pan. I will also have to mount the two retractable lap belts also, so I am thinking of drilling and tapping a piece of plate steel for the bolts to pull against on the underside of the bed.

i'm looking to do a rear seat ant that one looks nice!

(btw, go back to freeborn red when you do it right) It was freeborn red and I will go back original if I ever completely restore. I am really kind of liking the utility of Krylon OD Green. If I ever decide to restore, I know it will be a sad day because I know I will quit using the truck to do what it was meant to do in the first place.

Mike ... it only has two seatbelts. Thanks for the compliments.

BTW... I got my new exhaust done today. Cost me $172. Did I get ripped off?
