You may not have enough shackle for a 4" lift. . Most 4" springs are at least an inch longer that a stock spring. You might damage the spring under compression or, at least, the spring may not fully compress when the shackle runs out of travel. Find the eye to eye specs on the Skyjacker leaf and compare it to stock. Ad the appropriate length to the shackle

I asked Dave (lcwizard) to elaborate on this. He actually did elaborate on it but it was in an email to me. I ordered a bumper from him (great product, I am very pleased) so since we were discussing the bumper by email, I asked him about this shackle angle question. For future reference and so that others might be able to find this with search function, here is his reply....

"....The length of the shackle has to accommodate the longer leaf pack. When you add arch to a spring the eyelets move in making the install difficult and leaving the shackles pulled in to an inverted position. Spring designers counter this by making the main leaf longer
to bring the spread of the eyes further apart at rest. How much longer depends on the guy who drew them up. You can call the manufacturer for the main leaf dimension, eyelet to eyelet. Your frame mounts for the spring are about 42" . A stock leaf is about 44"
and Toyota uses a 2 3/4" shackle. If you add the 42" frame measurement to the shackle length that's 44 3/4" If your leaf pack is an 1" longer a 1~2" longer shackle is fine. You want enough play as not to bind the spring in compression. You can measure the eye to eye
of the spring with a flexible tape...Sneak one from you wife's sewing kit....my wife still doesn't know what happened to hers...."

This makes really good sense. I always thought that people just bought extended shackles for lift. Now I know otherwise.

Thanks Dave! Pics coming soon of the 4 plus bumper.

Ok. I am going to try something new. Whenever I try to insert photos that were taken by my iPhone, they sometimes wind up rotated funny if I send them from my phone to my computer then post them. They never seem to act funny if I post them straight from my phone to Mud. So I am posting this from my iMac and then I will try to edit and add pics from the Mud app.

The 4 plus bumper is a very very nice design. I am very pleased with it. I ordered the flat stock basket because it is a little bigger inside dimensions. I knew it was going to fit my 45qt Yeti that I have owned for about 2 years.

It did add a little weight to my rear end and it did soften the ride. I now have a little shackle angle(maybe 10*) but I have ordered new 4+ shackles from Dave. I ordered +3/4" for the front and +2" for the rear. I think it is going to make a big difference once installed. I will post up when I receive them and get them installed.

Here are pics.

This is how the 45qt Yeti fits in the flat stock basket. It is a perfect fit. Here are some up close pics....

Alright I received the shackles from Dave and they are very sturdy. They didn't do as much for my shackle angle as I would have hoped but maybe now the springs will relax a little. I think that the weight of the new bumper and the length of the new shackles have combined to help soften my ride considerably. It isn't near as harsh as it was. At least now I am not thinking of purchasing all new springs. I can definitely live with these now.

Here is the front.

I ran a 2.5 inch skyjacker lift. It was a "Soft Ride" version. Is your 4 inch a soft ride? I think each lift size has a soft ride option. My 2.5 inch was the best riding set of springs I have had on a cruiser. And my shocks were just pro comps.

keep on keepin on'

crazygreek can you see the sticker on the front spring in the front shackle photos? the sticker is from Skyjacker and says L40FS. I wonder if the "S" means "soft ride"? Or maybe it means Skyjacker? :meh:

Haven't updated in a while. Just been living life. Haven't really done a bunch of updates. I drive it regularly around town and 4 wheel some trails around here occasionally. Not very tough stuff, mostly just dirt roads.

I can just see it driving through Shangra-la and Eagle's Nest. Nice 40. I've driven mine to Tyler/Bullard a couple of times.

I should be getting a 4" Skyjacker soon from NCNole. Not at that price :frown:. I have a 2.5" CCOT shackel in the rear already to level out the SBC engine. Any recommendations on front shackels ro "to shim or not to shim?" etc. Too bad about that new neighborhood off Paluxy. That lake/pond out there was a fun place to drive to.

Man that is a blast from the past! I used to off road my 81 and 83 Toyota trucks out there back in 1981 and later. Do you remember the 'Reservoir'? Spent a lot of time there as well.

I bought shackles from 4+ ( he goes by LCWizard here on Mud. He gives a mud discount and makes a great product. I have not shimmed mine yet but I need some on the front. The last time I had it aligned, they told me what shims I needed but now I have forgotten what degree. I guess you should go ahead and lift it and do all the mods you are going to do, then take it to alignment shop and find out what shims you need. And be sure and write it down. It's hell getting old....

Wow Kerry, I haven't checked your build thread for a while; it's looking great!

Thanks Lee! I'm very pleased with how it is turning out.

I hate to say it but the 40 has gone begging for attention the last 6 months since I bought my 80 series. There is only so much 'toy' money to go around so the 40 might be getting jealous these days. It is my first love though, so I will be back to spending money on her before too long.

The 'reservoir' is more of a legend. I have heard of it on several occasions, but don't think I've ever been out there. In the 80's I rode dirt bikes and three wheelers across that Paluxy Drive area. Where is/was the reservoir.

It was basically the property that "The Woods" subdivision sits on now. The "reservoir" was south of University Blvd and west of Old Omen Rd. Kind of on that corner but it sat further back from the road. It was on the same property with what we called Lake Dogwood but Dogwood was further south on that property. To access Dogwood we would go down down Shiloh rd, turn left on Bascom Rd and cross the railroad tracks (behind Trane), then turn north on a dirt road and go into a bunch of trails there. It is mostly developed now as The Woods.

Thanks for the description. Never been. Do remember a friend pointing out a power line road that seemed to go straight up off of Bascom or Omen and saying, "that road goes to the reservoir".

This is awesome, I actually used to live in The Woods. I know growing up there in the 90's there were a couple places that were still undeveloped, but I never got around to exploring any of it.

Hey Alex! How is that diesel 40 treating you?

All of that property where the woods is now, used to be some great trails. We also used to roam all of the property that is now holly tree. That was back when I was young and I did not necessarily 'hate mud'. Haha. When they were clearing all of the fairways for the golf course, and it would rain, there would be 10-12 trucks down there seeing just how far we could push our luck. I am sure the general contractor and the dirt contractor really appreciated us helping them with their elevations.

Hope school is going alright and let me know if I can help you with anything (with the 40, not school... lol)
