That sounds more than fair. I would definitely go with West Coast shipping given the majority lives there. Domestic shipping is unfortunately not that inexpensive.
Are you all planning on self-installing? If not, maybe it would be logical to decide on an installer and go directly there?
Most are self installing from my understanding - I know I am.

I will be picking my roof up hopefully in LA or LB. I have a trailer so I could bring a few east bound roofs with me to Phoenix az and save a few bucks in shipping to the east coast. If someone else wants to arrange moving further east we might be able to “pony express” the roofs across the country. Might be a cool Ih8mud community project.

If coming to the west coast, planning on picking up and driving to Central Oregon where we will install ourselves. Could have room to pick up others from PNW.

Laying out the logistics on each coast to help better align potential follow on movements/shipping.

West Coast Purchases:
1. @prwillard2 - West Coast Port (Los Angeles) Local Pickup, follow on movement to Twentynine Palms, CA
3. @JK FW West Coast Port (Los Angeles) Local Pickup, follow on movement to Phoenix, AZ.
4. @pdxtroopy West Coast Port ((Los Angeles) Pickup/Ship
6. @Owyhee Jackass West Coast Port (Los Angeles) Local Pickup, follow on movement to Central Oregon
7. @likethewheel West Coast Port (Los Angeles) Local Pickup
9. @LCMoneyPit West Coast Port (Los Angeles) Local Pickup?

East Coast Purchases:
2. @theglobb - East Coast Port (Charleston) Local Pickup
5. @bulletsmith East Coast Port (Charleston) Pickup/Ship?
8. @seanroe1 East Coast Port (Charleston) Local Pickup

Does anyone have contacts for an import broker at one of the ports? That is my biggest concern to find time now, otherwise we will need to modify the shipping to include receipt/offload/customs/etc at the port. Believe we'll also have to pay an import duty.

I would be appreciative if @pdxtroopy or someone else could help with LA pickup and moving it further north as I'm in the Seattle area.

@prwillard2 - you can set up import once the shipment is already en route. @gilmorneau might have some contacts there for a customs broker. Depending on what HS Code is used for the import it may be duty free. Maybe @svsisu can chime in from real-world experience.

@prwillard2 I only have contacts at Charleston and Savannah, but can check with them to see if they know anyone on the west coast. Can you see what they'd charge to get the other 3 to the east coast after it lands in LA?

It would probably be cheapest to use a freight shipping company to move the other 3 to charleston/east coast. Freight for a bumper is typically about $300, I believe a South African company getting quotes will probably be higher. Seems like @JK FW would be willing to haul from LA to Phoenix. Then we can potentially move on from there.

I'll also ping my local land cruiser club here in San Diego area to see if anyone has any contacts at the port or knows any shipping companies.

Please let me know if you have anyone here in LA - a singular container probably won't interest many and having a friendly individual will probably help quite a bit.

I'll PM @prwillard2 with my Customs Broker's contact information. Heads up to everyone, though, she's in Baltimore so she might have her hands full. Not sure--I haven't talked to her since the bridge collapse. BTW, it's not necessary to use a Customs Broker that's physically present at the Port of Discharge--a broker anywhere should be able to clear your shipment through any US port.

Re: HTS codes, I had a quick look through them. Of course, there's no code that exactly matches your cargo (it's kind of a unique item). At first I thought maybe it's like a camping tent, which falls under HTS code heading 6306 (Tarpaulins, awnings and sunblinds; tents (including temporary canopies and similar articles); sails for boats, sailboards or landcraft; camping goods). Unfortunately, most of those goods are taxed at either 8% or 8.8%. Not ideal.

So then I thought, maybe it's more like a camper. The only campers I could find in the HTS codes are "slide-in campers", which fall under code 8708, and are taxed at 2.5%. Better. Or maybe it's a car part, which also fall under code 8708 and are also taxed at 2.5%.

Nothing I could find that's relevant is taxed at 0%. That's usually reserved for some farm equipment, or military goods, or in some cases goods that are imported from certain countries (I didn't see South Africa on the list).

In any case, you should probably all agree on how you're going to declare them on your HS-7. If somebody wants to dig through the codes, they're here:
Maybe there's something hidden in there that more closely matches what you've got.

I'm going to pm @prwillard2 with some more info tomorrow because I need to check my notes on what I had to pay for import duty. My recollection was that it was minimal, actually much less than I expected. And, I'll send the contact info for the broker that I used that is based out of Charlotte. As @gilmorneau stated, most brokers can clear shipments from any port, and I know the one I used can. I was very impressed with the minimal cost and efficiency of the broker I used, and how quickly they were able to have my shipment released for pickup. Due to the shipper that Alu-innovations used we had some hurdles to overcome and the broker was great at making S@@t happen.

Two things... I'm bummed that @theglobb and I don't have the chance of a cannonball run across the country hauling SA contraband, and that no West Coast people have stepped up to offer the same service  It's okay, we know we are on the right coast. All joking aside, if a mud ship doesn't work out, what ever import broker is used, they should be able to come up with the best cost for delivering/freight forwarding to the east coast.

@prwillard2 Do you know how he's packing the units? I assume pallet wrapped? Just wondering what the overall dimensions will be? Thx.

I'm sure Paul can chime in with up to date info, but I think your assumption of individual pallet wrapped units makes the most sense. Mine came on a pallet, "boxed" in very good cardboard packaging. The overall dims were 10' x 5' x 14" and filled the trailer I brought to pick it up. Photos of my top are posted earlier in this thread:

Thanks. That helps a lot!

I know pretty bummed! I'd offer to just do the reverse and drive out there and head back to the east coast but I got that steam locomotive mechanic job so neither option would have worked out regardless. I'm sure us east coast guys will figure the best possible option out!

All good brother!

Glad to see you being successful, that railroad is lucky to have you!

Update.

Have found a import broker that will help us with our import. Big shout out to @svsisu for the connection. Shouldn't be "too expensive" for import, there will be a 2.5% duty tariff on the value of the entire container (~50k USD) that will be shared with everyone. Total shipping cost to LA is $6680.17, so $742.24 a person. Then another ~$1250 for the tariff (~$140/person), plus the distributed costs of import with bond, unloading, transfer to warehouse, etc. So I'd plan for ~$1000 per person minimum for shipping/import.

We also need to work the onward movement of 3 of these roofs over to the east coast, only fair that we all help work that cost of shipping as it's saving most of us more money to have them come into the west coast. Off the top of my head I'd expect each unit to be probably a $300 freight cost, so another $100 or so per person to ship the 3 units to the east coast.

Waiting on the export documents, but will let everyone know once I get them.

Again, I am unwilling to pay for the shipping up front myself (no offense, but I really don't want to go through the legal impacts of holding your new pop top hostage if you don't pay for shipping), so will be getting in touch with everyone to get payment for this within the next couple of weeks.

Let me know your questions/concerns.

-Paul

Will we be paying you and you pay the shipper/customs etc.?
Yes, I will collect payment for full shipping cost, then pay the shipper.

Can do the import cost fee once they arrive and I get a total cost.

Team,

Shipper is getting the sea freight shipment worked out time now and will be getting me an updated price (he said it was a little lower than quoted after he rechecked). However, in the interest of time, looking to start collecting the money for shipping from everyone. Right now I'd like to get a $500 deposit from everyone if they're comfortable with that, this money will be held so I can make full payment of the sea freight once I get the final bill. Expect it to be more than $500 per person, but hopefully not by much. I will front the rest of the money needed immediately, then reach back out for payment.

I take Zelle, Venmo, Paypal F&F. Please DM me and I'll send you my handle for each of these payment methods. Please include your REAL NAME so I'm not struggling to confirm who has paid once the money is sent to me.

Those who have paid will be marked off below. As always, feel free to text me if you have questions.
