I decided to try and clean my coolant overflow tank since I was replacing a battery tray. Couldn't get the inside clean, so I decided to make my own tool. Cut a bunch of strands off an old mop, taped them to a 1/2 drill bit, and used a little steam and Simple Green to loosen things up. Stuck the drill/mop tool in the hole and went to town. Make sure you tape up the drill completely because you will rub on the opening and bottom. Not perfect, but worked better than I expected.

You can also use a solution called RetroBright (google it) to de-yellow the plastic if needed. It's a peroxide, oxi-clean, corn starch formula that creates a paste to wipe over the plastic - then sit it in the sun. I think there is an example in my build thread. Just FYI.

I did see that. Looked like it worked well. I screen shot idea I like from the forum on mg phone and that's one I had saved.

Great thinking Wes...

And your cap has caught my eye..

Is that original to that bottle (because your bottle looks the same as the one on my 1979 which has a different cap):

Awesome. Learn something new every day.

The only unfortunate part of this, is that we're restoring items the have gotten so brittle, do to exposure.

Marbles - Shouldn't you have two rubber hoses connected to your overflow tank? Maybe I'm missing something, but should your overflow tank fill, where does it discharge? :meh:

My '77 has the round overflow tank. The hose off the radiator is connected to the bottom of the overflow tank, and the overflow tank's discharge comes out the top.

(Maybe it's the angle of the photo, and the discharge is directly in line with the intake on your overflow bottle?)

I do believe it is original. Part number is 16405-56011.

Next question.....Do you know if it is still available?

I discovered the 16405-61040 cap (used in some 1990s models like the FJ80 and HDJ80) fits mine if you simply cut the hoses shorter...(because my 16405-56020 cap is no longer available)

And here is 16405-61040 fitted to my reservoir bottle:

I've found my bottle appears as good as new but that it is just my cap that's deteriorated.

My air-discharge is through a tiny pin-hole arrowed here:

And underneath there's a droplet-trap arangement:

(I made a replacement cap for myself from that bit of Nylon rod so that's why that's in the photo.)

You can see I've arrowed a hole in that droplet trap too. (I can't remember if there's just one there or more than one.)

PS. Right now I've got a fetish for coolant reservoir caps if you haven't already realised it :D

I am not 100% sure if it is still available under that part number, but I haven't been able to find it with a quick Google search. Toyota Parts Zone says it is no longer available.

It appears Cruiser Corps has 3 OEM caps like this in stock. Not sure if it is the same part number, but it appears to be the same one.

I also found this thread, which lists 16405-90A03 as a part number for a 81-89 60. Looks pretty similar to mine, and appears to be available.

So, Tom...are you going to start a 'coolant cap collection'? There's generally someone that has a collection of most other things cruiser related...you could be the first with the caps :p

Well it looks like I'm going to end up with 2 spare caps in my stash (not counting my original deteriorated/powdered one)..

16471-56030 is the second one that's on its way to me now. Apparently this was used on the Toyota Heavy Duty Truck, and the BJ40 and FJ55 models prior to Jan 1979 (except it continued on the Heavy Truck longer, until Dec 2001 to be exact)

(Isn't wscbill's jack collection absolutely incredible!!!!!)

City Racer carries some tanks he may have your particular tank, here's his link:

Thanks folks...

This goes to prove that finding good alternatives for NLA-items is often much easier than you think it's going to be...

Edit a while later: I just discovered that a 1981 JDM 2B-powered BJ41 was fitted with coolant reservoir/bottle (or TANK ASSY, RADIATOR RESERVE to speak Toyota language) 16480-24010 provided the BJ41 was made not later than October of that year. Now this is indeed the same reservoir that my 1979 General Market BJ40 was given!(So my eyes aren't deceiving me and we can indeed call "snap" over our coolant reservoirs Wes.)

Jadcruisers thread shows how to make your res bottle like new with a quick soak in a chemical bath. I think it's phospho acid of some sort. Check it out.

Here's the details.
First you have to were rubber globs and save lens,
take an 1/2 lt of hidrochloric acid
(this acid is use for take of the scale of walls and on hard water sediments, on floor and tubes)
mix with a 1 lt of water
and put the jar in to it all the way and leave like 30 min or as need it
this acid is dangerous for the eyes and skin so take care for splash or fell down
than throaway on regular drain
after that wash with water and size with a spongeand and get in to all inside corners
thats it !!
