Mike,

On board dedicated with 110V converter:

http://www.premierpowerwelder.com/

Fully independent and can find them relatively cheap on Ebay, CL etc..

http://readywelder.com/

IMO, inverter/ integrated electrical systems + OB welders = burnt up $h!T... run them completely independent from other electrical systems.

JUST MY .01 WORTH!!

thanks for the advice. I don't know what I'm doing when it comes to electricals, not that I'm any better at mechanical stuff either. So input from the pros on here is much appreciated.

M, these systems, IMO are good to get you off the trail in case of breakage during wheeling. I've used the ReadyWelder II tied into 3 batteries and it was a decent end result on a 3/16" to 1/8" fillet weld. BUT! that's about where I would draw the line for its short term capacity. Once back at my buddies place we cut it back apart and welded it back together with a 212 Miller...

Yeah, my fear is the shackle breaking off during a trip. It's already a bit cockeyed, I just need to be able to get back. Once back I'll have someone with better equipment and skills fix it.

I would recommend an upgraded alternator and Premier Power welder. I installed my second alternator
a couple of years ago, not remembering about the Premier system. A couple of weeks ago, I'm visiting BigMike
at Marlin Crawler, looking under the hood of Marlins' Crawler and saw his Premier Welder.
:bang: Really wish I had thought of that first! Anyhow, I'm fortunate as its a simple alternator upgrade, but its
also $$ now that is a bit harder to find.
But that's my suggestion anyhow. It also has a 110 outlet for electric tools. Win/Win when you think about it.

I wrote this all out without seeing what Jason said, so ^^^what he said. LOL

I have pretty much built my entire rig with a ready welder and am confident in its capability. Its portability is fantastic. Wire size, prep, and voltage all play a roll in getting a good weld. I run mine at 24v and either .30 or .35 wire and it penetrates very well. Since I run dual batteries in my truck this makes a good trail tool for me and it has saved my butt out in the back woods. I wouldn't hesitate to run one.

I have one more class this summer before graduating, after that I intend to enroll in the community college here for some welding classes. My experience so far is limited to a plasma cutter when swapping the rear axle.

Check out this video on the Premier Power welder. Might have to get me one of those if I can find one:)

Mike come out to the shop one day this summer and I will give you a welding crash course. It's super easy.

Sounds like a plan. You joining us this weekend for PINS? Right now it's just 3 or 4 vehicles.

Eric (wheelin62 here) is the guy lying on his back under a truck in my picture on the middle of the Ready Welder website.

He broke a spring hanger on the Rubicon and it saved his ass, I'm getting one as well.

I wish I could. I'm leaving Monday for California. Need to Baseline my rig because it's going to be a long haul.

Had a productive mothers day. Changed the oil in my motorcycle, topped off the fluids on the other cars and decided to take the big dogs to a local spot called the blue hole.

Walked up a trail and found this historical cemetery at the edge of town by the river.

One side was orderly and had tombstones but in the thicket of trees there were many graves that just had crosses marking their spots. It was haphazard and there was no order to them. Almost like a battlefield where they buried you where you fell.

I once visited a Roman grave site in south Lebanon, it was over 2000 years old and majestic. They were orderly, engraved with the life stories of the warriors. It was like they had their tombs built before they died.

Anyway got back home and planted 2 olive trees. Productive day.

Happy mothers day to all you mothers.

Don't run the fridge off of the inverter, that doesn't make sense. Inverters won't put out enough amperage to drive a welder reliably. Run a Premier Power Welder or (what I have, same as @boots4) a Ready Welder.

How do you have your fridge set up?

How do you have your fridge set up?

Plugged into a 12v outlet. Remember, these fridges are designed to run off of 12v OR 110v, so when in a truck, just plug it into a 12v outlet!

How does it keep drawing power when the truck is off?

I wired up a 12v socket through an aux fuse block that's constant power, not switched, so it has power as long as the battery does.
