Best FJ40 Upgrade Ever

Let me know how the steering knuckles and disc brake conversion goes. Are you doing just the front brakes, or all 4?
We are doing only his front brakes…. I am the assistant which means I will be doing 90% of the heavy s#!t. This guy is 80 yrs old and I am 71. His brakes are squirrelly and pull hard to the right. I told him to get the brakes properly adjusted as they are not normally this way…they usually just suck compared to modern discs.

He’s is headstrong on just doing the conversion.. he’s a really nice guy and my only acquaintance in NJ with an FJ40 so we hit it off immediately.

He will do much of the clean out. Thankfully. I will certainly keep you posted. That photo of your bike by the pool got me. I remember it vividly. I am impressed by how many folks here have so many of the same interests we all share…like, “honey, I only paid $25.00 for that”

Oh yeah, hot coffee while trying to steer with no power steering at the same time you're shifting gears would be rough!
Really it's not rough.
I took a saginaw setup off mine, and do not miss it.

I think everyone answered most of the questions you had about my post. I have a 1976 brake master and proportion valve from City Racer to balance the front/rear bias. Original booster. City Racer now offers an adjustable prop valve, I'd probably lean towards that.

For street driving, closer to stock height is better. I put on the lowest Dobinson springs (Australian company with a distributor in Miami) and 33" tires. I went there from 31" tires. I'm happy with them and would do it again. No hills in FL. You can see the stance in my avatar. 33's are as big as you'd want to go with a mini-power steering setup, tho. Factory springs are NLA.

I'll add to my list again:
5. Quick hinges from @69LC. Love being able to take off the doors easily. Hard top stays on for the rain and shade here in FL. (In AZ I'd run a bikini top.)
6. Intermittent wipers from a @Engineer8000 (pretty handy here in FL).
7. If you haven't replaced your trans/xfer case seal, then hit up @shipmag for a trans/xfer case bypass hose for safety.
8. Speaking of safety, adding new seat belts with the shoulder belts included is important. I originally had just lap belts.

Those are some great suggestions The intermittent wipers never even crossed my mind, but now that you mention it I realized that here in Florida in our other / family vehicle the intermittent wipers is the wiper I use most... BY FAR. How easy or difficult was that upgrade?

Plug in play. But I have an early prototype, which plugs into the original switch. I think he was talking out going to a three pull switch. Not sure if he's still doing them.

“honey, I only paid $25.00 for that”

I LOVED that bike and hated to sell it. But the moment The Mayo Clinic said they thought I had Parkinson's, my wife was even more against me riding it. Thankfully the guilt of me selling it made her very supportive of the FJ40 project. And every time I buy parts and she sees it hit the bank account, I keep telling her that technically we have way less money coming out of pocket for the FJ40 project due to selling my motorcycle and selling my Gen 3 4Runner. Her response was "No, because buying the bike and just showing up and surprising us with it was an out of pocket expense" to which I replied "Actually, no, it was not, because Biden gave everyone a $5,000 stimulus to try to help the economy during COVID so I felt it was my duty as a patriotic American to help the Florida economy by putting that $5k in someone's hands that really needed it in exchange for their motorcycle." She's still not buying that line of thought.

The "I am the assistant which means I will be doing 90% of the heavy s#!t" cracked me up too! Good luck, and don't hurt yourselves! My dad is 82 and used to LOVE taking his 4WD Jeep up into the mountains on his days off when he lived and worked in Colorado. He does not know about this project yet, and I'm looking forward to surprising him when I go to pick him up at the Tampa airport when he flies in for Christmas.

I will PM him this morning and find out! Thank you! I wish I had the later style wiper motor and wipers, but mine wiper motor is on the inside in the way of the sun visor.

Mine too (but not to that extent!), hopefully some nice folks on here will help her out getting rid of the unicorns stashed away.
All our wives dread the thought...

Living in eastern canada, gozzard tub on my 40 and 42 is one of the best mod , done 20 yrs ago

Great looking rigs! I just did a Google search on those tubs. Very nice, and not a cheap upgrade either! But especially where you live, not having to worry about rust is a worthwhile investment.

WOW, just watched the first video on the Quick Hinges. I really like that! Thank you for letting us know about them.

Glad you found them!

I’ve been working to catch up on delayed orders and working with a new local to me fab shop to get things ahead. I’m closing in on the last few weeks of Air Force orders working away from home, but occasionally I get times to sneak back home and keep things moving.

I’ve been posting updates on this thread: Quick Hinges - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/quick-hinges.1324868/page-4#post-15625832

If anyone else out there is interested, he IS still doing them, and can either set you up (if you are in the USA) to use your OEM 2 position switch (low would become intermittent and he has made a way to change the speed), OR, he has collected OEM 3 position switches that were available overseas and can set you up with that, so you have intermittent, low, and high. I have definitely added this to my "To Do" list. I'm just trying to decide which option to get.

Way, waaaay easier ways than that to add PS to a pre-73 :)

For anyone within a reasonable distance of the Orlando Florida area, if you want a bad a-s power steering conversion that will take ANY punishment you can throw at it, cruisermatt is your man! I've been to his shop and seen it with my own 2 eyes being installed on multiple rigs. Good prices on parts too, and he's right next to the USPS so shipping parts is super easy!

@FloridaLife back in the day, I was involved with the Antique Motorcycle Club I knew a few “elders” who enjoyed consoling the grieving widows and offer to “ take those motorcycles off your hands”. These bikes were some REALLY vintage Indians, Hendersons, Cleveland’s and stuff gone right after the depression wiped out so many American motorcycle companies. Sold my Henderson 4 for $27,000 to a guy in Switzerland …today it’s worth well over $100,000. Yep, grieving widows…you sly dog 😂

I'm actually looking forward to just the old lap belts (shoulder straps run right along about a 14 inch incision across my torso), but I should check with the Hard Rock Casino in Tampa to see what odds they would give me on my wife insisting on installing shoulder belts especially for the boys riding along (and owning someday when I croak).

WOW!!! (WOW to the Henderson). When my dad got home from the Army during the Vietnam era, he paid $1,500 for a 1956 190 SL Mercedes (looked just like the 300 SL Gullwing but was convertible with a smaller engine). Said he could pick up chicks in that car that he wouldn't have been able to pick up if he was walking down the sidewalk with a $1,000 bill dangling out of his back pocket. Drove it for 2 years, sold it for the exact same amount he paid for it, instead of less, and felt like he made out good. Now every time he sees one on one of the auctions on Motortrend Television selling for $150K - $300K it just twists him up! He also had a custom chopper made from a British Royal Enfield that he sold to buy my 'estranged' mother an engagement ring. He wishes he could turn back time and take back that decision too. LOL!!! I don't blame him!

My Uncle's dad was a mechanic and machinist during the great depression. Because it was cheap on gas, he bought a 1934 Indian, still had it when he died, and it looked like new. My uncle still has it.
