Finished the bump stop extenders, now just bleed the brakes and clean the outside.

Looking good! Could I trouble you for the Bilstein part numbers or your source?
Absolutely, I’m running a 3” Alcan setup with just slightly over stock length shackles.

Front shocks —33-230450
Rear Shocks — 33-186542

The rears are right within speck and will work perfectly. The fronts are a good fit with my setup, although, like you read, I had to limit the up travel. The shocks are also valved differently, but length was more of a concern than the valving, but in this case I like the valving and the length so I’ll see the drive-ability as I get it on the road and off road. One other thing, for the front stem mount I drilled the upper mount larger to accommodate the larger stem and bushings that came with the front shocks.

Thanks for all that info.

Well I finally got it out and took it for a ride, first thing I noticed was the bump steer. I’ll be heading to Six States to pick me up some 4 degree shims to bet me back to positive caster, then I’ll probably take it to get an alignment to get the toe in set within spec. Next I found a wiring gremlin with the front turn signals. They function differently with the headlights on than the do off, I’m guessing this is a grounding issue, I’ll be adding a ground wire to the lights to see if that clears things up. After that it’ll be ready for some road time.

Now for a couple questions, I know this is a long shot, but does anyone have a front left fender emblem they’d like to part with? I’m also looking for an interior grab handle to add to the drivers side door and a rear tailgate Toyota emblem. Anyway just thought I’d ask.

Thanks
Scott

Well, I got a couple more things done, one was adding a ground to the front signals, which worked perfectly, I’ve never had front signals so bright. I also had everyone I could round up help me wet sand and buff the old ugly paint, turned out pretty good.

Found out some bad news about the rear regulator gear I bought the other day. I had an issue with my key switch for the rear window so I decided to take it apart and see what the issue was. I found out that I had a bad solder joint on the switch which ended up being a pretty easy fix. While in there again I decided to replace the cracked gear with the new one I jus bought, well after everything was back together and a single up with the glass it stalled and stuck. I took it apart to find that the new gear was cracked in half. Argh!!! Oh well, it was worth a try. I guess we’ll see what come down the line later. I’d love to see brass gears again, but some good nylon or printed gears would be okay with me.

Oh, one more thing, the 4degree shims fixed the bump steer, I’ll still go get it aligned, but it’s 100% better. I also added 4degree shins to the rear axle, and Iv’e got no vibration.

So things have been going well with the 55, but I do have an issue I haven’t been able to figure out, but I will say I haven’t been able to get much time to troubleshoot since my daughter won’t give it up. Anyway, anyone ever had an issue with excessive engine smoke at idle only? It really smells and looks like a carb issue, but it’s a new Japanese Non-USA carb so unless the new carb came bad, which I find unlikely, it must be something else. I’ll be doing a compression test and checking vacuum pressures, but thought I’d see if anyone else has seen an issue like this.

BTW, my extra set of seats are going in to get re-upholstered, should be done in a couple weeks looking forward to seeing how they turn out. I need to get the new headliner installed as well. Once done the interior will be pretty nice. I also need to figure out what to do with my visors.

Can you tell if it’s an oil smoke or an unburnt fuel smoke?

If it’s unburnt fuel, I’d recommend going through a tune-up and carb adjustment (points, ignition timing, carburetor idle air/fuel mixture screws then idle set screw - in that order). Would also be useful to know what jetting it came with and what elevation you’re at.

NOT THE GEAR ANYONE WANTS UNLESS ITS TO LOOK AT, IT BROKE AFTER THE FIRST USE. TOO BAD, THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A GOOD OPTION.
This is good to know, I have been trying for last 3-4 weeks to buy a couple sets and now he has gone silent which I guess in my favor.

I believe it is unburnt fuel, I do know there is some oil burning which is evident at startup, I'm guessing the valve stem seals are just wore. Cap, wires, plugs and rotor are new, timing set to factory, carb adjustment completed per FSM. I did rejet the carb to the high altitude jets to see if that would clean it up, i'm at 4400ft but didn't make any difference with the smoking issue. It really seems like it is loading up. PVC valve was also replaced, and valve adjustment was completed not long ago.

The engine did not smoke at idle with the previous carburetor?
Even though you rejetted the carb, I wouldn’t rule out something wonky going on with it despite it being out of the box. There’s a lot of other adjustments and diaphragms and solenoids on those Aisin carbs.
You might run a compression test to rule out anything downstream of the carb being the culprit.

I wish I could remember before the carb was replaced, it was some time ago and the previous owner had done some wonky mods to the carb. I do know after the carb was installed it sat for a couple years without running, when I picked it up it had varnished ethanol fuel, enough to create a heavy ping and it did smoke. I rebuild the carb which I found had an issue with the idle solenoid, and the float was running higher that I like, but besides that everything seemed to be in good condition. Just for background info, I am no carb guru, but have rebuilt many carbs will good success. I'm hoping I can borrow a friend of mine's carb that he took off when he did his fuel injection swap to rule out a carb issue. I'm going to try to get some compression numbers tonight to see if I see anything related to a mechanical issue.

Funny thing when these issues occur, my mind seem to wander with ideas of different swaps or rebuilds, there are some ideas I've had recently which I think would be fun, a 2F-E, a 3FE which I've done in the past and loved, or even swap my low mileage 1FZ out of my 80, then swap my 80 with a 1HZ-T that is collecting dust in the corner of my shop.

Then reality sets back in and I stick to the reliable old 2F, but I guess I have options if the 2F is mechanically tired. The other issue is the limited down time I have so a quick carb swap is high on the list if it fixes the issue.
