I had my 74 fj40 2f in the shop of and on for years. They were constantly scoping it. It never ran right. Then I bought a 76 FJ 40 and started the project. I tried for the heck of it putting the 76 distributor in the 74. It never ran that good for years. Come to find out the bushings were wore out in the old distributor. So a word to the wise try putting a new distributor in the rig. Get rid of the points go electronic type. Just FYI. I'm so thankful I tried a new distributor. I paid mechanics for nothing all those years.A couple updates. I cut the fuel filter open to see how bad the rust problem in the tank was, I was surprised, the filter was clean. With that result I decided to clean and rebuild the carb. After the clean and rebuild, varnish was terrible from sitting with old fuel, and a newly crimped wire connection for the fuel cut solenoid I restarted and found that it ran far better than before but still had some erratic idle. I started looking at the ignitor/coil and distributor and found that I was lacking a good ground for the ignitor, and that the coil wires were loose on the coil. Fixing those issues along with the carb made it drive-able. The story isn't over yet, while driving it has a pretty heavy ping. I checked the timing adjustment and at this time it's 7degrees BTDC and it still pings. I'm thinking due to the high performance cam, the custom domed pistons and the de-smog I'm either going to have to re-curve the current distributor, buy a new non-USA distributor with points and ballast resistor, or a DUI. Still trying to decide the best route to go.
Thanks
Scott
Thanks for the advise. After re-jetting I still have the issue so at this time I’m thinking the recurve/rebuild is the answer, I believe the weighting/spring rate is off for all the changes I’ve made. I’m thinking Toyota Non-USA Distributor with a Supra electronic module, still researching this option.I had my 74 fj40 2f in the shop of and on for years. They were constantly scoping it. Not familiar with those let me know how it works for you. Is yours a 2f engine?A couple updates. Yeah, it is a 2F. Adding a photo for viewing pleasure. Not familiar with those let me know how it works for you. Is yours a 2f engine?
Tell me more about the Supra module? Thanks for the advise. Sorry, it was a Celica and I was referencing the thread here. I didn’t dig too deep into the details, just decided to go with the Pertronix. I did like the all Toyota option though.Tell me more about the Supra module?

Distributor Tech - '75 through '77 Conversion to Electronic Ignition Using Toyota/NipponDenso Parts
This evening I finished upgrading a lightly used 2015 Trollhole electronic distributor using Toyota/NipponDenso parts. I replaced the stationary (breaker) plate with a '78 through '80 2F stationary plate, replaced the electronics with a new Camry (Celica, not Camry - it was late at night when I...forum.ih8mud.com
Do you have any pinging at 14 degrees?I was still having surging idling issues and reduced low end torque. So I decided up the timing to 14degrees and increase the primary jet to 180. So far seems to be good, but only time will tell. Just documenting changes for myself and others.
Thanks for the question. At 14 degrees I was still getting slight pinging even with premium fuel. It was mainly happening under heavy load and/or when I was into the secondary. I ended up re jetting the secondary to 220, and backing off the timing to 12 degrees which seems to be a sweet spot. It’s idling good, good power, starts well, exhaust smell is as expected and no pinging. I think I’ll hold here and see how things go for a while.Do you have any pinging at 14 degrees?
