y'know, my uneducated guess is that slightly stiffer spring on the exhaust side might help at higher loaded speeds...I found valves and spring kits at PEP for reasonable price; have been considering round 2 of improved head "improvements"

What does the 'RV' mean? Is it just a part number or a concept behind the specs?

Recreational Vehicle cam; the idea being those are heavy and slow and need some low-end grunt, so they design a cam with some extra exhaust valve duration and a little more overlap which yields low-end torque at the expense of high-rpm hp. Moves the power band lower in the rpm range.

FWIW I have another 2FE that has made it a bit past the point of test firing. It's closer to a "stock" build with the original cam and internals and comparitively light headwork. It's sitting in a FJ55 with a SM420, but the way work goes for me it could be anywhere from 3 to 30 months before I get the damn thing finished and on the road. I'm also planning to put a H55F behind my first 2FE when it gets swapped to a fresher 62, but that will be even further off.

I can't wait to see your 2FE powered 55!!!

And I would love to see your v2...

On my F.5 the machine shop used LS valves, springs, retainers, etc. I am using Delta cams 262 grind.

I have a Delta regrind, ran in to coil bind on the exhaust side. Block was decked and head resurfaced, had the valves swapped out. Haven't ran it on the road yet, it has about 6-7 hours of run time on the test stand. I'm happy with the way its ran so far. It has nice throttle response.

Cool to see that this thread got brought back several times over the last 12 years to have additional information and experience, well, added.
Apparently though, 2F parts are getting harder to come by - it looks as though Offenhouser doesn’t even offer the 4 barrel manifold anymore, and I’m not even sure if Man-A-Fre is even still in business.

Unfortunately, the 2F rebuild I wanted to do all those years ago never happened, ended up getting rid of the ‘85 2F that I was gonna do the rebuild on.
Now I’m in the middle of a resto on the 55 and am teetering on the fence between either building the 2F I’ve always wanted or saying screw it, and dropping in the 350. So far, numbers say 350, and nostalgia says 2F.
Decisions decisions...

I read a thread awhile back about using a ‘70’s 2F block, with the head and rotating assembly of the ‘80’s 2F. I recently found out that the domed early 2F pistons are available only thru custom piston manufacturers, while the flat-tops are still obtainable.
Anyways, square block, balance rotating assembly to the gram (instead of ounce or kg or whatever Toyota thought was good enough), check crank line, hone as necessary, bore as necessary, mill block deck and heads to get static compression in the 9 - 9.5 range. Install a new cam with an ~ 260 - 270ish duration with ~.470 lift (probably more).
HEI ignition. The kicker would be a smaller cfs 4 barrel with central fuel bowl (like an Edelbrock 500). Preferably I’d sit it with the front face facing towards the driver fender so the barrels would be split between the front and rear 3 cylinders. With the Offy manifold obsolete now, I was thinking of trying to build a manifold. Would possibly try a TBI setup, but I like old school.

If a setup like this brought up the power numbers by at least 50 (hp and torque), that would be pretty sweet.

That would double the power of my 2F.

Not really, mine is pretty peppy, KC cam from Delta Cam in WA, desmogged, recurved, fresh rebuild. Runs like a raped ape.

Gotta love that! Did you do a full rebuild or just a cam replacement?
Do you have specs for the grind?

I did a full rebuild not long ago, everything, new pistons, rings, bearings, gaskets. The camshaft went to Delta Cam in WA state, I'm not sure about the specs of it, we settled on the "KC grind", that was what they called it. That call was based off of how I use my rig and the fact that I am desmogged, running a JimC recurved dizzy, non-US spec carb, and a pretty stock engine.

What Cruiser is this in? How long did you run the 2F before the rebuild, and how do you use your rig? DD? Weekend warrior stuff? Hunting? Local wheeling or extended road travel?

74 FJ40, 4 speed, 4" lift, 33" rubber.

The 2F was salvaged from an 83 FJ60, no telling how many miles, I ran it hot after I put it in my 40, destroyed the pistons and rings, hence the full rebuild.

I daily drive my rig, it also spends a ton of time running forest service roads in the mountains searching for backcountry fly fishing spots. No serious off road stuff, just off the beaten path trail runs looking for trout. It is loaded pretty heavy, 4Plus tire/cooler carrier in the back, a fold and tumble with two teenage kids in the back, beer, fishing gear, tools, all the other stuff.

Sorry for the 20 questions @rkymtnflyfisher , but it’s great to get exactly that kind of feedback

Not a problem at all, that is why this site is so awesome! I have had tons of help along the way myself.

FWIW. The Melling MC803 seems to have been a popular stock, made in USA cam replacement. However, most suppliers like Summit, Jegs, Autozone and others say that it will ship directly from Melling. When doing a parts lookup (for fj40) on the Melling website, it doesn’t list any cams. I called Melling and asked if the MC803 is to be discontinued and they said there has been no decision to discontinue it but there are no MC803s available at this time. They also said they have no info if they will become available again. Maybe there is someone at Melling with more info on the MC803, but I didn’t pursue it.

Last year I was looking for a cam for a 292 chevy inline 6 and there was a shortage of cams also. It's just not for the 2f.
