Build A pig for Father's Day

I carefully removed what was left of the firewall silencer pad. It's pretty brittle at this point and IIRC, I already removed a piece or two on the driver's side right after I bought the pig. Has anyone ever made a pattern for one of these? I have a vague recollection of someone having one in decent shape for sale a few years ago. I'll have to do some searching.

I'm thinking it might be nice to recreate this piece in a more modern material, like this 3/8" thick sound and heat insulation:

I found this one that Pigeaten sold for a 1970 but that's clearly a different animal than the one that I just pulled from my '77. That is the for sale thread that I was thinking of though.

Different part numbers.

1977:
55201BOARD SUB-ASSY, DASH PANEL SILENCER
67870-90365FOR L/HEATER
67870-90366FOR W/HEATER

1970:
55201BOARD SUB-ASSY, DASH PANEL SILENCER
67810-90353FOR W/HEATER (03/1969 - 07/1969)
67870-90353FOR W/HEATER (08/1969 - 08/1972)

I used that along with ther Damplifier material for my 60, and it made a large difference. Can actually have normal volume conversations in the rig now. It was a few years ago but I am certain I got the inspiration/education from somewhere in @J Mack’s build thread.

Removed the brake and clutch hardlines on the firewall today. Unless you want to remove all the individual clamps, you have to take all three lines out at the same time (2 brake and 1 clutch). Also pulled the radiator and condenser out. Pretty sure that clears the entire engine bay.

Unbolted the windshield wiper linkage pivot points but have an issue getting the driver's side to come through the firewall. There is a welded defrost vent that is in the way. I simply cannot get enough clearance to clear the hole in the cowl due to the interference. I've spent about 30 minutes looking through mud for instruction on how to take the linkage apart but haven't come with anything yet. @scrapdaddy I thought there was something in your build thread but could only find the wiper motor issue you were having. Last thing I want to do is destroy the linkage.

After giving up on the wipers for the day I tore into the fuel vapor separator and gas fill nozzle areas. Pulled a lot of it but I am now thinking about draining the tank before proceeding with the lower rubber hoses. I ran the pig down to E before parking it in the shop but I'm not sure if that means 0.5 or 5.0 gallons. Probably need to have a couple of containers before loosening the drain.

First photo is driver's side linkage showing the interference and second photo is passenger side which had no issue clearing the cowl. I haven't dropped the last bolt on the motor yet as that won't help with the issue as far as I can tell.

In DEEP now. When i drained the tank i wrapped a coat hanger around funnel and hung it from frame 😉 5 gallon bucket fits perfect under thar 🧐🤪😉
Yes. Nice that they "conveniently" installed the drain plug right above the exhaust.

Hmmmmm…
All black front face on the core support. Only the lower skirt and inside faces of the radiator mounts are black on my 77. That’s interesting 🤔
Does it appear to have been painted with a brush? They definitely painted the above mentioned areas on mine with a brush.
I was going to ask about that at some point. Everything is black including the headlight housings which I'm pretty sure were yellow zinc plated from the factory. It all appears to be professionally painted though but must have been done a long time ago. Even all the bolt heads are painted but I don't see obvious lines on the edges where it might have been taped in place - but I should probably look a bit closer.

So what would factory have been? Some combination of black and white?

This is about the best pic I could come up with ATM. The front of mine is white, but if you zoom in, you can see the black paint on the inside faces of where the radiator mounts, and the lower part of the very front, which I referred to as ‘the skirt’. Definitely painted with a brush, runs included.

Pry it apart at the ball and socket joint.
Thanks Jim. Looking at the photos last night, I concluded that I had not exhausted every possibility to remove the linkage without disassembling. I just had to drop the last bolt on the motor to give myself more left to right movement. With enough wiggling and adjusting of the linkage orientation I got it out this morning. It comes out with horizontal as opposed to vertical movement, if that makes sense. Again, it came out but man is it tight.

Edit: But nice to see that it will pop apart if necessary.

Interesting. Mine is not brushed on but I'm guessing it's a combination of factory black (top and bottom supports) and rattle can black. There's definitely factory gloss (or semi-gloss or whatever) on those supports and they are 100% painted. The rest is a more flat/faded black shade. Whoever did the additional black did a decent job but you can see some overspray and the back is still white. Not sure about the headlight mounting rings. They are still yellow zinc on the back but black on the front. One of the them has some white on the front which might be under the black - hard to tell. I assume that isn't factory either but maybe it was and the white came from a respray of the body at some point?

Would be nice to know though how it was originally. Just an educated guess that it was all white except for the top and bottom supports as well as the hood latch bracket and vertical support rod which were all black. In other words, the middle was all black and the sides were white to match the body.

Having said that, you probably wouldn't want to see any white behind the chrome grill (reference last photo). Not sure you would given the solid bottom corner areas?

After I managed to pull the windshield wiper assembly, I didn't want to get back into the fuel tank hoses as we were expecting snow and the plan with the :princess: was to light a fire and just enjoy the rest of the day. I did manage to remove this rubber flap from under the radiator and started working on the body bolts before the snow started.

Rubber is in great condition as were the three pieces on top of the radiator area. Hard to imagine they were replaced at some point but maybe.

I cobbled together a body mount cheat sheet from the parts diagrams that others might find useful. Pretty sure it covers all years.

Should have included the actual parts list to go with the diagram. Not sure if much is still available; haven't checked. IIRC everyone, or at least someone, was trying the Energy Suspension cushions not too long ago?
