2F Hydraulic roller lifter project

I have a t-square and a pencil... I'm just envious of anything over $10 used to make cool stuff

I don't think Pin_head meant any disrespect ... I think he was challenging you to make it turbo IMHO

I would like to see this transform from 1930's throwback engine to 1990's as least :) and see where it goes from there
 
Yeah, and when you are ready to drop $50K+ on a 4 axis CNC milling machine to do this kind of work instead of farming it out to someone else I'll respect you too.

I'm too old fror this childish crap. Tuning out and dropping off.

You obviously haven't been around here long enough to understand PinHead through the typing - it's all good fun. We all make fun of ourselves, and others that share our passion in "turd polishing". People will respect the quality of your work, but you have to grow thick skin because you will meet a lot of questions around "why?". I did on my Megasquirt project - why not just use the stock ECU like everyone else and save the time and money? I did it because it's what I wanted and welcomed the challenge.
 
It is a distant second to Matt from OZ that had the turbo 2FE with custom everything. He must have had $20,000 in that motor but it didn't have a roller cam and lifters.

Frontrange, there are not a lot of high tech builds here, so expect your build to be heavily scrutinized. IH8MUD does not have a lot of real a**holes, but sometimes it's hard not to poke a little fun. It's mostly envy... :grinpimp:

Lipstick on a pig, polishing a turd, call it what you will, it's still high tech work and good reading.

I would drop $20K into a 2F motor in a heartbeat if I had it to burn. Not because it's the smart thing to do, (much better engine choices out there if I just wanted power) or the best use of $20K, but because it would challenge me, be truly unique, and still be mostly Toyota. Something about a tractor motor that just begs to be made somehow, better...

Keep posting, I can't wait to see the final result!:beer:
 
Alright, I'm back for the rest of the show. My blood pressure is high enough already, not going to let a self confessed pin head push me over the edge.

Speaking of which, so you have a 3d printer? That's nice. I have one of those in the corner of my shop too. I thought about making you a nice little plastic turd to polish, but then I'd have to spend time blowing 3 years accumulated dust out of it. Till that little POS learns how to make real metal parts and gets about 1000 times faster I'll stick with the 8 foot tall, 4000lb CNC milling machine and my lathe.

What is the advantage of the roller lifers in the 2F? Does this eliminate the need to do valve adjustments?

I like the idea of a 2FE with the roller lifters.

"Turd Polishing" is a well respected pass time here. It is not a term of disrespect. Glad you can hang in there.
 
Careful, you are talking some smack now.

If you are serious about competing for the title and knocking out Matt, you will have to finish the build.
Just don't let anyone know why you are doing it. It is the same reason that people climb Mt. Everest.

Unless the title comes with a feathered hat and a cape, not even going to apply for the position..

Hydraulic lifters eliminate adjustment. There are hydraulic roller lifters and solid ones. Mine will be hydraulic.

Roller lifters of either type eliminate a huge amount of friction that exists with a solid tappet riding a cam lobe. The reduction in friction and reduction in the size of the point of contact between them also allows a correspondingly large change in lobe profile to allow must faster valve lift, and longer duration in the open position

Look at the difference in lobes between a SBC roller cam and the F Cam:

It's not even close, which is why I need to make a new cam blank. You just can't grind the roller profile out of a non-roller cam. I dread this part of the project because of the timing gear. It's a very complex 4th axis profile operation that I haven't done yet. But if I'm to graduate from Padma machinist to full jedi machinist I need to conquer my fear of the 4th axis...

I'd be glad to give you mine. Pretty sure I held the title for a while. Matt M and Andrew Farmer were the kings of pushing the F design to it's fullest potential.

Really interested in the Megasquirt. You're going to have to elaborate more on your EFI setup. I've been working on an OBDII system for our motors but the megasquirt system has always intrigued me.

Wasn't there someone who sold 2f blanks? MAF was having them made here in the US. Pretty sure it was Elgin

How are you going to do OBDII? There's some neat new instrumentation out there that relies on post 95 OBDII protocol, never thought it would be an option on an F engine.
