Unbelievably cool! So what are your final goals for this engine? Any other details, pics?

Port Fuel Injection using a modified 2F intake
EDIS-6 Ignition with a missing tooth crank wheel
Megasquirt control of spark and fuel with WB02 and knock sensor feedback
Custom throttle body
Targeting C/R ~ 9.5:1 with a .030 quench copper head gasket unless I go with a turbo, TBD

I'm taking a short break from engine work while I wait for a sheet of plexiglass to arrive. I decided to eyebrow a clear piece of plastic and see how it matches up with a head before taking a chance on boogering up a block. In the mean time, I'm working on the FJ40's dash and instrument cluster stuff. The megasquirt has a cool little terminal device called a megaview that gives you a tickertape of engine parameters and the ability to modify the tune on the fly. I'm making a panel to hold it that goes where the stock radio would fit, and then making a new dash plate for the double DIN GPS I just ordered, then a new instrument cluster.... and on and on it goes...

How are you going to mount the crank wheel for the EDIS-6?

Looking forward to the completion of this project. Port injection should add a whole new level of tuning ability.

Lipstick on a pig as some would say, but damn, it will be a good looking pig!

I have a 2F engine sitting in a barn. If you get this working, I will have a new retirement project. ;)
 
Sorry, I don't have any pictures of the modified harmonic balancer with the missing tooth wheel. I left all the rotating parts with my racecar machinist so he could balance them. I just made an aluminum spacer that bolted to the stock balancer. The timing cover is a bit tricky. I couldn't see any easy and elegant way to mount the sensor, so I just welded a plate on so I could test the EDIS with a starter crank and timing light to see if it worked (it did).



It looks pretty goofy, but I can't see any alternatives short of casting a new timing cover in aluminum that has the meat on it to machine a proper mount out of or find another place to stick it once the engine is back in the chassis and I can see what I have to work with. That will have to wait till I make more progress in other areas.

That's no more goofy than the way Ford and Chevy build theirs. Similar to the 3.8 chevy.


You answered questions I hadn't had a chance to ask yet. When I asked about Cam profile, I should have clarified. What are your RPM goals for the motor? Do you already have the flow bench numbers on the head porting?
 
I have no plans to change the RPM range of the motor. It's not like I'm trying to get more HP out of a SBC by running it up to 8K, I just want to modernize an old 2F and bring it up to circa 1990's technology to see what I get. I'm not porting the head at this point. I think with the extended duration from a roller lifter profile and un-shrouding the valves at the cylinder walls with the eyebrows, this 2f will breath like no other, normally aspirated at least. And if I'm not satisfied with the end result, I'll start researching turbo's. I live at 7,000ft above sea level, so I'm guessing the turbo will happen eventually, just a matter of when.

Sweet. I have a 2FE running on a Megasquirt MSII, using the stock dizzy and a MSD box. Just getting the drivetrain back together to start tuning under load. Really interested in the Megaview - but have you seen MSDroid (similar to Tunerstuido on any Android device via a buletooth dongle on the MS).
 
I've heard of that, but I'm not one of the cool kids who has an android. Besides I had a hole to fill...



Also I wanted to be able to switch between megaview terminal and a PC to download programs. My idea was that little pocket would have a serial port, and a switch to swap transmit/receive lines between local and PC connections. I'm thinking I'll get a small magnet to imbed in the pocket, and make a cover out of some steel.
 
Yeah, and when you are ready to drop $50K+ on a 4 axis CNC milling machine to do this kind of work instead of farming it out to someone else I'll respect you too.

I'm too old fror this childish crap. Tuning out and dropping off.
