I always get people that want to crap on “Patina Preservation”

Maybe is the overuse of the word, maybe it’s a true distaste for anything other than the perfect truck.

The way I look at it, the world has plenty of perfectly painted vehicles. Painting a survivor like this would erase all the stories it has to tell.

From all the 15’ photos this truck looks painted but it’s just a nicely polished 41 year old factory paint job with stories to tell.

Both running boards have this same wear pattern. This tells me that lovely couple that owned it went places together.

This front fender tells me she wasn’t much of a spotter.

This rear fender tells me he was not much of a backer

Patina Preservation is not just about not knowing how to paint.

Agree.

I bought a 68 Patrol once literally in the hood in Oakland. While I know you are not into Patrols in the slightest this one was right up your alley. Original paint was oxidized but otherwise amazing.

So I get the saving a survivor thing and not restoring it. ;)

Cheers

What products are you using again for cleaning? I’ll be doing the same shortly! Or should I send it to you!!?

Gotta get in the cab to work in the in-tank pump later so I got some light on the subject

Just kidding. I do, but the top came off so I can install some fresh gaskets all around.

Cleaned more on the engine. It’s where I want it to be. Going back on with what I have on hand here in the shop

Really like to see this.
I loved just driving it, and wasn’t planning on selling, but other projects were poking me... And before I knew it, or could change my mind, it sold within 2 hours.😎

Wes (the original owner) had many great stories to tell. He used this rig the way it was designed to be used. I think I gave John one of the several live rounds of ammo I found unde the gas tank?
Maybe I’ll send @wngrog one of the spent 12 gauge shells I found as a token of appreciation!

here’s a pic of Wes and his wife.
Two of the nicest real eastern Oregon people you couldmeet.

Oh, that oem bumper you see, he retrieved it from the spot he left it 20 plus years before. He figured I might want it, and sure enough it was still where he left it...

Yeah, it’s truly amazing to see survivors like this. You did good snagging it.

We have a headliner inbound from @Cruiser Corps. One reason I took the cap completely off (besides the fact that it needed a gasket) was to take the liner and cap to someone with 1/2 a clue to install it. My last two liners looked pretty bad with me doing them.

I packed up the 100 with power coat parts.

@GA Architect taught me about Indian Head. Nothing goes on my trucks without this stuff. Fuel pump delete plate and lower Tstat housing.

Lastly I got the swingout and one bumperette
Off in prep for a 4Plus tire carrier.

I think I’m going to call it quits for the day at that.

Edit....also happy to report that tightening the oil pan stopped the leak.

It’s probably appropriate to explain how the truck got where it’s at. I did not know @wngrog other than seeing his projects on Mud. We had never talked or exchanged messages. About 2 weeks ago I sent him a message introducing myself and the project. I did not even know if worked on anything other than his own trucks. At that time, I really just wanted to get the truck running better and I knew Nolen had some luck with the Sniper setups. Lucky for me, the yellow patina won him over and he agreed to tackle the project. It was at his shop within a week and after a quick look over we had an enormous parts list and the beginnings of a dismantled 40 series.

I am thrilled.

Definitely should be!

Looks like he is doing great work and it is difficult to find someone to tackle projects such as this at this level of detail!

My 79' went through a similar process a couple months ago by my local Toyota wrench and my engine was removed, but was also doing manifold gasket, clutch, pressure plate, resurfacing the flywheel, rear main seal, and oil pan gasket, so I guess Pulling the engine made sense.

I look forward to following the thread, very few are willing to go to this much trouble not to over restore, great to see this one get that treatment!!!!

@jmlockwood : Having followed most of your builds, I make the following request:

Please have @wngrog locate and install front headrests. There is little worse than a correct later model 40 missing them...

Great truck.

When did they start adding them and where is s good place to get them?

Great truck.

Eh. Seems like a lot of work/expense for non functioning headrests but that’s John’s call.

@G-Cat had some discussions with @wngrog on the issue. I'll start by saying I can think of A LOT OF THINGS worse than a later model 40 missing the headrests. I think the headrests are something that I will keep in mind but may not necessarily be part of what @wngrog does for the current refresh. I mean, I really just sent it over there for a tune-up and oil change and look what happened.....

Yep, I prefer the lowback more old school look of no headrests.

Hence, it has none... :)...

I think perhaps on the 79+...

Just not my cup of tea...

We got a new powder coating business in town and I dropped by on the way home today with the parts.

To say I’m blown away would be an understatement. He’s got a 35’ oven, builds overland trailers for fun and likes to do forensics to find true OEM colors.

I’m sold. Can’t wait to get this stuff back and bolt it on.

I wonder if anyone else in that training conference call I had was fixing an ambulance door handle and cleaning off old gaskets?

This handle was spinning bad but I was able to dissect and add a C clip and it snugged it up.

These 3m rubber pads do a great job getting rid of the old gasket and glue

I popped out the hinge pins after grinding off the heads. @SMG is sending new ones
