Hi Folks,
I'm a fairly experienced DIY mechanic getting ready to do a front axle rebuild on a friend's '92 FJ80. Never worked on an FJ or any other solid-axle 4x4. Now, my friend is the sort who does not consider maintaining his vehicle until it needs a repair, so the back plates on both sides...
I've been robbing parts from my uncle's Toyota junkyard. Took the power steering off an '84 for my FJ40 and just brought the front axle home so I can do the disc brake swap. A couple people asked me what I want for it when I'm done. I'm just taking the steering knuckles for the disc brakes, but...
I've been inspecting my recently acquired 04 LC, and tonight I took a closer look at the front axles. The PO had some work done to the right front axle 10k miles/1yr ago which I can provide more specifics on if someone things it may be related.
My question is is the gap I noticed here...
Great condition front axle out of an early 80's BJ40. 4.11 gears and Aisin hubs. No rust.
$500 picked up in Las Vegas, NV, or I can ship via Fastenal.
Thanks
OK this is really starting to bother me.
If I accelerate occasionally (more now than before) there will be a pop from the front left ish. I'm thinking its axle related. It sounds like something is binding then releasing.
Then if I brake it will pop again. Last week I had the front drive...
I'm looking for good condition axle shafts, I do not need birfs.
If you have a set that does not have a groovy seal area then I'm interested.
Thank you
I have a cut and turned front axle setup for shackle reversal in an FJ40. It's been used on a off road truck so it has some dings. Would make a great drop in axle for someone not wanting to cut and turn their own axle.
Asking $400 for the housing plus shipping. I am open to offers.
I have a pair of fine spine birfields which have been spares sitting in the back of my garage for 10+ years. I'm concluding I'll never use them, as I have long fields in everything I own. I believe they came out of a 1983 mini truck.
In good shape, except for the surface rust on the outside...
My LC is a 6/79. My question is, am I hurting anything by driving it while this is happening? I have not put it in to four wheel drive and don't intend to until I get it fixed. I would just like to run around town and give the kids a ride when it is nice.
More garage cleaning. Front axle shafts and Birfields. All bits $35 each, plus the ride.
(1x) OEM course spline Birfield, FJ40
(1x) OEM long side axle shaft, FJ40
(2x) OEM Birfield, mini-truck/4R & FJ60
(2x) OEM long side axle shaft, mini-truck/4R & FJ60

I'm reassembling my front axle and I believe there has been some rust on her in the past. The knuckle balls are rough in texture from the rust; and it's uniform from lock to lock. I think she will leak more than I want to deal with.
Anyone have one available?
Thanks!
i have FJ62 complete front axle for sale. 4.11 gears, trussed housing, vented air scoop to cool those disc brakes, aisin hubs, calipers, rotors, tie rod, drag link, end to end. (Sway bar not included)
Can include springs or remove them.
rear axle to be available at a later date...
Asking...
Can I reuse my front axle spindle that I knicked up with a dremel tool trying to get the brass bushing off for replacement ? (stock '83 FJ60)
The bushing looked kind of thin, so I tried taking it off 1st with a Harbor Freight 3-jaw pilot bearing tool to no success and then took a combination of...
I have started into the front axle rebuild job on my stock 1983 FJ60 (with 283 K miles) and had some questions I've come across. This isn't my daily driver so I want to do this right with no shortcuts and can wait for things to happen (new parts/tools etc) if needed. I have a Terrain tamer kit...
Pasadena area. UPDATE 7/1/17

I have the long axle shaft, both hubs, rotors, ABS sensors.
The smaller parts can be shipped, but the axle housing will cost more to ship than the housing.

I started with the poster design then designed the -t-shirts which you can see here:
80 Series Front Axle Reference shirts by Wits' End
But the poster is the same artwork just in 18" x 27" and laminated. You can order the poster on my site:
80 Series Front Axle Reference Poster- 18"x27"
I have been trying to figure out a new shirt design for nearly a year and it wasn't until I was pouring through the axle cheatsheet that @DARKNESS started and I modified it and redesigned a few things to created a t-shirt design. I am not going to make a huge number of these but if they prove...
