Is it some unwritten law that an fj roof must be white? Would I be excommunicated from the fj community if I went with a different color? I have been restoring my fj for about a year now and I have picked my color and I wanted my roof and some accents to be painted satin black. In my year of fj picture surfing, I have not found anything but white. Just curious if anyone else has tried a different color scheme.

You'll only be excommunicated if you have the bezel upside down and persist in having it so

Most people will have the roof white as other colours just "don't look right" on a 40.

This is a very diverse community insofar as mods done to a 40 is concerned though, so it is quite safe for you to paint your roof black or any other colour, it is after all your truck.

But having said all that... I'd paint it white.

back in the day I painted my top 621 rustic green to match the truck. I thought it was cool at the time but looing back on it now, it just didn't look right. Here's a picture of it I ran across some 23 years after I sold it, still sportin' the same 'do and '80's pinstripes.

012 Cygnus white is 'correct' but it's your truck. Here's one of how it should look I stole from the 'net.

I would definetly agree!!cap and bezel, always white, but it is your ride.

Here is one I saw on ebay that I think looks really good with a black roof. Might not work for those of you south of the mason dixon line where heat is an issue. Up here in South dakota a little warmth is always appreciated! lol

Interesting fender lights

I always figured the roof was white so the law enforcement helicopter would realize why that vehicle was going so slow, it's obviously a Land Cruiser.

Do what you want. We kinda like this silver/pewter arrangement. :grinpimp:

If you are indeed "restoring" your 40, then your only option is white...what white depends on the year of your rig.

If you built your 40 with some mods, then do what ever you want, it is your rig...but yes, a white top is a 40 thing

we're talking about roof color i case you missed it. pay no attention to man behind the curtain

well I guess I'll be excommunicated along with the OP for pointing out the obvious irony of the necessity of a "correct" white roof but not other junk. Hey OP, do what you want but don't listen to me. We're all just a bunch of "previous owners."

Ah yes...the loose use of the word "restoration" seems to be a pet peeve of yours as well...fear not...you are not alone ;)

OK...so I just noticed that you have a '71, and that you are installing a '74 engine, with a 4speed...so this is not a true restoration, but it will be a great build I'm sure. That being said, paint the rig which ever way you want to as it is your rig...but a 40 without a white top is like Thanksgiving without turkey:beer:

Oh...and where are the pics...we like pics

Mine had a black top and bezel when I got it. The first thing I did was put it back to white. To me, it doesn't look like a cruiser without a white top. But that said, it's your truck and you should do whatever the hell you want and not listen to anyone, including me. I'm just posting the pics to help you decide.
