Got her all put back together and it’s rides so much better. Thanks for the suggestion on the hubs @pappy. Now we’re just waiting on torsion bars from sway away.

I think next on the list is to replace the worn out bench seat with some bucket seats from Corbeau. They even make frames as well. Thoughts?

I've been waiting since April for my Sway A Way, they gave me an end of September ship date.........
Nice looking ride by the way!

Lol I ordered on the 19th, I even called Northwest Off Road last week hoping they had stock since they aren't as popular as they use to be

I found a place in the UK that has brand from Australia called Peders or maybe Pedders, they had 3 sets in stock but I couldn't verify the Hilux/Pickup cross reference. I'll just get everything else put back together and replace them when they get here.

Well men, harvest is officially over for the year, and I’m finally starting to catch up on some things. Since I last posted, we bought a house with a 24x30 detached garage. More on that later, maybe in another thread.

Earlier this week I was able to find enough time to address a few things on the pickup. A remanned steering box from RedHead Steering gears out of Washington. They’re popular amongst the 80s guys, and we’ve had good luck with the one on our 80.

While I was in there, a new 555 pitman arm, idler arm, and a new Toyota steering shaft seal from @NLXTACY. Turns out the ones from the 80s are an exact match for the ones on our pickups.

The plan is to knock out the front main seal and oil pump oring this weekend, and that *should* cover all the major leaks. Still waiting on the torsion bars from Sway Away, maybe one day Ill get them…

Got it all torn down, degreased, and ready to be put back together…

…but before I do, should I be worried about these stress marks on the oil pump? AFAIK it’s the original and it worked fine when I pulled it out…but how much farther will it go?

Geez, I would just replace it. You have it off so now would be a good time. AISIN oil pumps are not that much at Rockauto.

I was hoping to wait until I could do a dual timing chain conversion sometime next year, but I didn’t realize they were so cheap. Thanks again Pappy.

Just had sinus surgery last week, so I’ve been on my butt the past couple of days…and I’ve got another week or so to go. I’ve spent way too much time online and I’ve gathered a list of stuff to tackle on the pickup and the 80 once I get back on my feet

First, I scored some great finds at a Toyota yard in Denver. An upgraded tach, dome light, and a sweet center console for when I get around to bucket seats. Since I’m putting in a new oil pressure sensor for the SR5 tach, I’m doing both water sensors as well.

I’ve had a power steering rebuild kit for a couple of years now, but couldn’t ever find the part number for the bearing. Thanks to all the free time, and the great folks here, I found it in a separate thread via @KLF.

The blower for the air compressor has been nonexistent on lower settings since I got it and was accurately described by 22re Performance as “being blown on by an elderly athematic lady”. Picked up one of those from the dealer as well.

Last but not least, Christmas came a little late @wacked. Did you get yours?

The radiator did develop a very small leak. I can get away with adding just a little bit every other week or so for now. I’ve been looking at the Koyorad, you all have any thoughts?

Nice build! I've personally never had an issue with a radiator from a big box store like O'Reillys or Autozone. I like their warranty process and other than OEM don't think the quality of any other aftermarket rads is that different.

Currently running an AutoZone radiator in my 4Runner right now and it works well. Oddly enough the OEM Denso didn't fit!

Thank you! That’s odd and unfortunate that the denso unit didn’t fit.

I appreciate it, but In my experience on this pickup, I’m avoiding any major parts from these stores. Our filing cabinet was getting a little full, so the first thing I did after surgery was to declutter it and get rid of anything we didn’t need anymore. I found a lot of old receipts from the previous owner, and it was pretty telling. Seems like they had the same problems I did, 2 alternator tickets from Oreillys, the ticket for that oil pump, and several exhaust gaskets, and a radiator rebuild.

The only reason I’m considering the Koyorad, is it seems like a well reviewed aluminum alternative. Being Japanese is also a nice bonus.

Completely understand! It's a shame that those parts didn't hold up, I've almost exclusively used them for my rigs in the past with no issues.

It was time. This thing is super nice. The mounting bracket is about half an inch thicker than the old one, and frustratingly I realized my radiator shroud wouldn’t fit anymore. That’s when I found out I had the wrong shroud on. Looking up the part number stamped on the side, Amayama said it was used on forklifts, and some websites said it was the previous generation pickups. New one should be in soon.

Also replaced the cab mounts over the weekend. The 2 rear bushings next to the bed weren’t all that bad compared to the middle and the front bushings. Unfortunately these are NLA, so I went with the energy suspension kit that Marlin Crawler offers. The ride is a lot smoother but firmer now as one would expect from poly bushings.

Great build! Always nice to see someone take the time to do it right and breathe a lot of new life into an old truck!

It’s been a minute. Since I posted last, my wife and I finished remodeling our house, got a beater car for gas mileage, and had a baby! I’ll be danged if he’s not the cutest kid in the world.

As far as the pickup goes, I had more than one hole in the muffler, so I opted to scrap everything behind the headers and get LCE’s kit with a 30” resonator to quiet it down. I think it’s still too loud though.

About 2 weeks ago Emily blew an EFI fuse on the way home. Figured it was time to swap the fuel pump. Ih8 fuel lines. Flared nut wrenches wouldn’t even work, had to cut the fuel line on the bracket and zip it off with an impact.

Since I was replacing the pump and bracket, I went ahead and replaced the sender too. It worked fine, just rusty on top and honesty I didn’t want to drop the tank again anytime soon. It was worth it to me. All new hardware too.

Congrats on the little guy and progress!

Dashpot underneath the throttle body never really worked. The plunger was loose because the spring is partially broken. I’ve just learned to feather the throttle, didn’t think too much about it because I didn’t imagine they made these anymore. It’s pretty smooth now.
