The rear sill is totally whacko - sheet metal where the frame should be! Not the worst I've seen, but nowhere near worth 25K.

I went back thru the pics,
WOW, there is no separation between the body and rear crossmember

Keep looking! Not sure how wide you've cast your net, but given that you've been looking for years, I would broaden your search a bit if you can. Land Cruiser values are all over the place. It's hard to believe how much they vary to be honest. I spent a couple of years looking before I bought mine last November, and got to know values pretty well. I didn't pay much more for my rig than the one you just found, but it's a night and day difference. I watched for them daily and didn't rule out long distance travel to pick one up. Basically what I observed is that even at a good price, these machines tend to sell slowly. They're worth what they are worth, but a seller has to be patient because it's such a limited market. If a seller wants to move one quickly, that's when you'll find your best deal.

Thats a crazy price for that fj40. Period. Id rather see the rear sill rusted and nothing hidden like I feel this one is. I saw a really good starter 1978 fj40 in NC recently for 12k and I bet you could have it for 10. Hell for that matter I saw a really good project one in the mountains of NC for 3000$ last year that I wish I had bought. (was buying a house at the time). I feel if you wait or just keep looking you'd find a better fj40 for a price thats not out of your mind like that.

I'm in Upstate NY. Near Syracuse, not often I see one for sale within a 4+ hour drive. So haven't been able to see many in person. I have alerts set up on BAT, Hemmings, Classics.com...based on what I'm hearing I'm must be missing something. Here a link to Classics.com aggregates from a variety of listings.

https://www.classic.com/veh/1982-toyota-land-cruiser-fj40-fj40934090-n8yK9RW/

Nationwide the cheapest rig is $24k and it's a SA import. Looks good but still I have yet to find anything under $15k that doesn't need major repair or resto. If anyone has suggestions of best places to search I'm open to any ideas.

Thanks for all your help!!

the mud classifieds are the best place to look. I have seen some real gems on there for way under 24k. and honestly FB marketplace will have good ones occasionally. I try to stay away from car websites and dealers just because I feel they are way sneaker with things.

I live on an island and normally have to drive minimum 5 hours and take a 2 hour ferry to see vehicles. soo I feel your plain there.

the whole back end would be a big PASS... whoever did the body work on that? thats BAD and 8K is pushing it for whats under that bondo in the rear

there are several others in the NY area i saw on facebook that were decent priced in the 14-16k range

yeah I did mine in my back yard on MLK day it was 20 outside and mine looks good. why would anybody hack it that bad! its not a hard welding job!

For the amount of $ in your budget you should be willing to travel or have it shipped. In the past a lot of folks come here for input on value of a particular vehicle, like you did. Others have found vehicles in the classified section. It's encouraged to ask and post pics. There's a clubhouse section. If you find something that's a long distance you might be able to get a knowledgeable member to look at it. There are also some solid members who clean or restore vehicles in the classifieds. You'll find most are very open and honest.

Curious to know what you're looking for? Restored and ready to roll, project with patina, mechanical project with good body work done, platform for significant mods, mechanically sound driver, etc? Being honest with yourself on skill, desire to wrench, desire to learn, or desire to throw money at it is useful.

BaT might be $$ and the peanut gallery there can be irritating, imo.

Best thing I did was buy, wrench on, and sell my first 40. I learned so much about what I did and didn't want that when I found my current one, it's been an absolute joy.

This! I would not have changed a thing about how I did it. I have learned so much in skills and confidence. I cant put a price on what I have learned in my 40 adventure.

LMAO🤣

Don't get all caught up with bling and try to purchase a US spec 40. If it's all blinged out look at the b4 pics. Idk, how familiar you are with FJ40's. You might want to look at the link below. If you find something of interest, post it up.

Body work can be the most expensive and time consuming repairs. Mechanicals are usually more straight forward and predictable.

I've seen most of them. But again all over $17k. Ideally lm looking for '75+, no V8 (well maybe if done right), a driver, tasteful upgrades, willing to do some resto. Any color but white. Budget is $25kish inc. any repair/resto. If anyone happens to come across anything close to this feel free to share. Thanks again.

I know it can be a sh!Zshow, but set up some craigslist alerts too. I have a few for 250 miles radius beyond my area and in dry climates. I see decent ones pop up all the time.
