Who has a Warn 8274 Winch on their FJ40?

I would think that you would have continuity thru the brush when in contact with the
Armature. The windings would have very little resistance.

When I say that. I’m speaking about continuity to the ground.

If you getting continuity in the device as shown in the photo - to ground - that could be an easy fix in following the wiring back from the brushes to see a ground connection.

Those brushes look good to me.

I took it apart…the gears were locked with rust. Cleaned them up and it spins freely very well. However when trying to hot wire….nothing.

There's a huge thread in the winch section on how to rebuild them along with WARN rebuild kits sources. They're not difficult to work on.

Yeah, I’ve been eyeing those. I’m hoping to troubleshoot this one to at least figure out what is going on. I’m thinking the motor is shot.

I don't think wires from the bushes should ground to the body. I think the studs are insulated from the case. As someone said those brushes look OK. Polish the armature, clean and grease and assemble it. See what happens. Warn has a test procedure. I think it's been described recently someplace on mud.

I WANT a warn winch on my 40...

What else might slot into this bumper? Is this the 8274 setup with plate and lower cable opening in bumper?

Continuity from the brushes to the motor case seems to me to be a dead short - why go threw the armature when the path to ground already exist. I think the brushes look good. Normally they curve to fit the armature diameter. The line across is usually the wear limit. +1 for find a book or youtube.

I would also replace the contactors with an Albright Contactor. They are prone to fail when they’re old and you don’t want your winch to not work when you actually need it.

I recently replaced the motor and the contactor with an Albright.

Motor I used and other info can be found here:

Just picked up an 8274 this week. I have a dead short somewhere and I believe it is bc the brushes are touching the armature. The washer that goes there is made out of some sort of plastic or fiber and it was in a few pieces when I took the motor plate off. I’ve made a few from plastic, but I assume the Warn washer is heat resistant or something. Does anyone know where I can get that washer? I’ve looked and apparently I don’t know what it is called.

Going to try the version I made today to at least see if that is the issue…but want the Warn part.

Did you get this sorted out? I’m by no means an 8274 guru, but I’ve rebuilt 2 in the last year. Both of mine had a washer that you are talking about, but they both appeared to be metalic.

Hey thanks. I ended up getting another motor from a Mud member. Very sure the original motor was toast.

Thanks to @aztoyman for getting me back up and running with a motor that works and some other random parts!!

Still looking for:
-Clutch plate assembly (used is ok…mine is rough)
-Mount for FJ40 (trying to work something out with one a few hours away)
-Warn 3-wire remote
-Albright contactor (eBay price just went up $50)

If anyone needs any used parts let me know. I have random stuff now and a motor that doesn’t work. Casing is in good shape and the brushes could probably be used if someone needs those.

Does anyone have a mounting plate that would be easily attach to the FJ40 (no welding) that they would be able to ship? With the storms I am hoping to get my 8274 mounted so I can get out in the community and start pulling trees/heavy stuff out of driveways, etc. I have the old wire and need to move to synthetic, but getting stuff shipped might be a little iffy right now…not sure.

I’ve got an 8274 mounting plate that was on a Jeep when I bought my winch. I can measure it. It’s the Warn mount. I put the 8274 into my arb.

I could be wrong, but I think I remember @powthief19 making something. Maybe just the fairlead.🤔

I think he has the mounts and then full bumper inserts. I think the mount has to be welded though and the full setup is out of my budget.
Just trying to help. Pardon me.
