Thought i've seen an old cb antenna mounted, that could be cool.
Anything else?

That was never a good place electrically to mount an antenna. I know many did, but they never really knew the transmission patterns. I would fill and weld.

The problem with roof mounting is that the non-metallic roof wont provide a ground plane. You'd need a half-wave or full-wave antenna to get good propagation.

But, since it's just for cosmetics, a whip antenna would fit the bill nicely.

Wow....now I feel really bad for thinking the thoughts that I did as I was clicking on this post.

Arizona, thanks for making the rest of us look like fools all these years with your great info/chart, practically none of us have been doing it right.
Antenna mounted left rear and never notice any problems but that probably was because most of the people I wanted to talk to was in sight.
Did have and hear some interesting conversations on the CB from truckers late at night when trying to stay awake.
Some of those guys had such powerful setups you didn't need an antenna.
One conversation sticks in my mind....
I was on I-40 just west of Needles around 2 am. listening to a couple guys bantering back and forth when one guy went silent.
Got a few miles down the road when they started up again.
Went something like this... Trucker 1; There you are, I was wondering what happened to you.
trucker 2; Yeah, I had my head out the window looking at the stars and my toupee blew of so I had to go back and get it.
trucker 1; that reminds me of the story about the guy on the train in a Pullman sleeper.
He was getting settled in when his toupee slipped off and fell down into the berth below.
He stuck his hand down feeling around trying to find his toupee when the fat woman in the berth below started hollering "THAT's it, THAT's it."
The fellow above said "no it ain't, I part mine on the left."

Which reminds ME of a CB story my uncle shared with me many years ago.

When he first got married, he and my aunt lived in an apartment, which did not allow antennas on the roof. Soooo, he decided he would try a little experiment using an old box spring from a bed.

He said the first time he turned it on his neighbor came running out of her apartment screaming that her TV was talking...and it wasn’t even turned on!

Mine has the same left-over hole. Dash was cut for radio and CB side by side. Ugh.

You need more holes... get all your corners covered for the best transmission!

(Somebody had to post it) lol

Just do what you were planning ... they work just fine... if you go for the 80’s wip antenna ... be sure to put a tennis ball near the lower part to stop the wip from tapping your tub ... you get tired of that real quick lol

I have mine on the front pass bumper ... I guess that’s also a No no

But... I was usually the tail in the trail ... so I guess that just doesn’t matter :meh:

With CB frequencies you are correct. Some Ham frequencies require different antennas. Also , there is an answer to fiberglass mounting for CB. RV's , boats, and also the FJ40 can fall into this. The answer is in a "no ground plane" antenna design.

This is funny. One thing that this looks like is most of these antennas look in HAM frequencies range. What I am saying is they probably are ok for those frequencies which completely change the radiation pattern. Most people used CB stuff on autos and were never aware of the most important part of installation, the radiation pattern.
