Afternoon MUD

Looking at moving to a heavier, better additive package, and better engine lube.

Based on my MUD reading and AU specs for a 1fz for my climate (Bay Area (in the occupied state of California)) 15w-40 Chevron delo 400 (readily available at my Costco/Walmart cheap $23 2.5 gallon) looks to be a good choice.

I've had the truck a year and have been running Chevron 5w 30 with a quart of marvel mystery oil to clean her out every 3k miles. I'm burning about a half a quart every 3k.

Also, based on reading changing to Toyota factory filter and leaving the WIX for the family Toyota 3rz and 2uz.

What say you? THANKS MUD!

Thanks MUD

Oh no an oil thread. I'll bite.

I like to run the recommended stuff by the manufacturer. If Toyota gives us a different oil spec than Australia, then I still feel more comfortable with our own spec.

It's also convenient for me.
My Sequoia and Land Cruiser both get Shell Rotella Gas Truck 5W-30. Also get the same Genuine Toyota YZZD3 oil filter. They work well, haven't had any issues or any reason to change it up. I used to be a Mobil 1 user, but this oil is also synthetic, and does better than M1 in some tests (I think Project Farm did a video on this).

FWIW, the Sequoia has 203k, dealer changed until 147k, personally changed since then. Always a Genuine filter and synthetic 5W-30.

My Land Cruiser has 163k, PO changed himself with synthetic 5W-30 and whatever filter was on sale at O'Reilly. Got to me at 158k, genuine filter and synthetic since then.

If it means anything, I use the same Shell Rotella Gas Truck in my 2016 4Runner with a genuine Toyota filter as well. Used to use genuine Toyota Motor Oil on that, but that got hard to find. 0W-20 for this one.

All I can offer is my experience and opinions. This is what I plan on using for all three of these trucks until I find something better or maybe if Mobil 1 drops in price a bit. I think as long as you have a quality synthetic oil it's hard to go wrong these days.

As far as going with a different viscosity, my school of thought is that it's ok to get a lower 1st number and ok for a higher second number.
So an 80 calls for 5W-30; a 0W-40 offers a greater range of protected temperatures. But a 5W-20 does not; same for 10W-30.

Again, this is my thought process, my opinions, not trying to say these are infallible words, this is just what I do and it works.

I run Delo 15w 40 or Mobil Delvac usually but have run O’Reilly 15w40 and Valvoline Premium blue. Pretty much which ever of those is on sale. After monkeying around with a Wix, Baldwin and Toyota larger size filters i settled on the yzzd3 because I read a write up where a guy dissected several filters including a yzzd3 and it ended up being a well built filter with about 50% more filter media than competing brands in that size range. And, they are affordable and easy to obtain.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to give the Chevron Delo 400 15w-40 a try and I have picked up a few yzzd3 filters.

With the delo can I run further than 3k between changes? What is a good safe interval?

I also ordered a Blackstone kit. With me only having her 1 year and not knowing the history I thought it might give me some insight.

Just a heads up oil standards have been changing every few years for the past few decades. I highly recommend you base your oil selection off of the owners manual and API label.

For example you are going to find a lot of old info about using Shell Rotella diesel oil. Unfortunately thanks to emissions standards Shell Rotella dropped the gas engine certification from most of the products lineup. Why dose this matter? It matters because using oil off label voids part warranties and the warranty the oil manufactur provides.

There is a Shell Rotella gas engine oil now though. But its missing most of the ZDDP thats in deisle oil. Guess the stuff is bad for modern emissions equipment.

Thanks for this you got an electrician here talk and learning oil.

So..... My go to has been Chevron supreme 5w 30 for everything else and it is API SN the Chevron delo 400 15 w 40 is also API SN So based on your comment I'm safe because it carries an SN rating?

Both are dino :zilla:
Correct me if I'm wrong but the API SN means gas 4-stroke motor? and the n unlike the Land Cruiser owners manual specification of S"H" is just a newer "S" model in the advancement of API ratings, is this correct?

Thanks MUD:flipoff2:

Blackstone will give you a good idea of how long you can go between changes. Depending on use and the condition of you motor I would think you can be at 5-6K mile intervals without a problem, but Blackstone reporting will provide real clarity on that.

Awesome!
Thanks 🍻

Mobil 1 10W-40 (4-5 quarts) and Mobil 1 15W-50 (2-3 quarts) depending
on the weather and how much oil the engine is burning. When the engine was newish I used 5W-30, then 10W-30, but at around 200,000 miles she started to use oil, so began bumping up the viscosity. Also saw slightly less lead (from ~19 to ~ 6ppm ) in the EOA after switching to the higher viscosity oil.

Agree with everybody (been discussed before, a lot) about changing the oil when it needs it, using a quality oil filter, and having a tight air intake system.

Delo 15w-40 and yzzd3. Is it better? I have no idea like everyone else I just do it because other people who have no idea told me to. Frequency of change is a much more important factor than type of oil.

Can we discuss red vs. green coolant next?
Red coolant all day 🍻😜

The sticker on the side of my 1993 air filter canister says change oil every 7,500 miles. I do it every 5,000 because I put miles on slowly. If I drove 15,000 miles per year I’d go 7,500. I run my dodge/Cummins 10k and have for years.

Diesel engine oils have been given the SN rating because of all the emission equipment including cats on diesels now. Heck, my 2005 dodge/Cummins has a cat. There is nothing to worry about there.

I agree that Blackstone labs is a good source of true info. Every time I send a sample in from my Cummins they say I could have run it longer. A few years ago I decided to see just how long I could run Dell 15w40 in my Cummins and at 15k the report came back with a remaining TBN of 3 and and still clean enough to keep running it. I changed it at that point because my curiosity was satisfied.

I’ve read on mud that the owners manual for our engines in other markets allows for 20w50 in warmer climates and that the 10w30 recommendation here in the USA is epa driven. Pulling the valve cover on a very old engine and seeing shiny metal after running DEO makes me feel warm and fuzzy. :)

I run 6 qt 75W-90 then mix in 2 quarts of ATF+4 for my oil changes.

I also use WIX oil filters.
