I just rebuilt my 1FZ-FE motor, and just finished my first 50 miles break-in with Lucas Break-in oil. I have another 500 with the new Lucas oil. But then what? I'm in Southern California and almost Never gets below freezing. but i also have tighter tolerances now since the rebuild. open to suggestions
Diesel engine oils have been given the SN rating because of all the emission equipment including cats on diesels now. Heck, my 2005 dodge/Cummins has a cat. There is nothing to worry about there.
That's not a universal truth. But many companies have developed mixed fleet oils due to demand. Delo is an example of this. I'm no chemist though so I only know whats on the side of the bottle. I bought some Shell Rotella T4 after Shell droped SN from T4 back around 2017 and didn't notice till I got home. It has something to do with ZDDP I think. I'm sure this old truck engine wouldn't care though.
I've heard mixed things about the WIX filters for the 1FZ-FE. I personally just buy whatever the newest Toyota ones are. They're only around $8 if you shop around online. I don't know why some people get worked up over the price of oil filters. I think the only parts Toyota sales that are cheaper than oil filters are nuts and bolts.

Just a heads up oil standards have been changing every few years for the past few decades. I highly recommend you base your oil selection off of the owners manual and API label.
For example you are going to find a lot of old info about using Shell Rotella diesel oil. Unfortunately thanks to emissions standards Shell Rotella dropped the gas engine certification from most of the products lineup. Why dose this matter? It matters because using oil off label voids part warranties and the warranty the oil manufactur provides.
There is a Shell Rotella gas engine oil now though. But its missing most of the ZDDP thats in deisle oil. Guess the stuff is bad for modern emissions equipment.
They did lose the SN rating, that is true. But Rotella is ask JASO-rated, which is a motorcycle standard. So Shell is basically indirectly saying that it will work fine in gas engines, they just didn’t want to lower the phosphorus in order to conform to SN standards. I forget exactly what the phosphorus additive PPM limit is for SN oils but Rotella T6 is just a little higher.

It was finally time to do my engine oil change after postponing it for a few weeks. Step 1: 14mm socket to remove the drain plug. Step 2: Make sure you have waste oil containment unit. Step 3: Remove drain plug and let all oil drain out. Step 4: Call Blackstone 2 weeks ago to get a couple of...
I've been running Chevron delo 15W40 for over a year now. I send my oil in the Blackstone and it looks amazing they have me at 7,500 miles between oil changes.
I also use the Toyota factory filter YDDZ3.
I hardly burn any oil now (about 2qts over 7500 miles currently) this current oil I'm on I did the Rubicon in as well as other off-road rock crawling trips so the extreme angles and oil all over the place isn't normal highway driving. I went 5,000 mi on my last oil change I sent in and I barely burnt one quart.
Blackstone said they'll probably have me up to 10,000 miles per oil change soon they're just getting a baseline.
With everything going on in the world I've been able to find decent deals on the Chevron delo 15W40 whether it's at Walmart or online through Amazon I've been able to get gallons for around 10 to $12 each.

I put Delo 15w-40 in every engine I own except my wife’s turbo 2.0 that’s under warranty. I do the change at 5k in the cruiser simply bc it takes over a year to accumulate those miles. Have you pulled your valve cover lately? It’ll be clean in there.
I also run Delo and Delvac, whichever is on sale, in my Cummins Dodge for 10k between changes. Black Stone lead me to a 20k OCI some years ago running a Donaldson glass media filter. Was too much for my nerves so 10k it will be. Haha.

About 6 months ago I was chasing down oil in my intake so I pulled my valve cover changed the spark plug seals as well as drop my entire intake off and throttle body with a buddy with an ultrasonic parts cleaner.
Oil in intake solved.
I agree I love that oil I just looked online and I can't believe how expensive it's gotten and hard to get.
I have a 2007 Tundra and a 1998 Tacoma I'm thinking about running the delo 15W40 in those as well.
I agree it takes me about a year to tack on that many miles also but with the shortages and sending my oil into Blackstone I'm comfortable stretching the mileage out a bit over time. Also with adding a qt about every 5k I'm refreshing the additive package
Word on the street is that anything called motor oil will work.
M1 0w-40 here in Colorado for the winter with a Motorcraft filter. Was running Delo over the summer/fall. I've read not to switch too much between types/brands of oil, which would be easy if the Mud community would come to a consensus on what oil to use and why. Alas, no such luck.
