y'all could be paying just as much on a much more boring car

Psh. This way, you own TWO nice ones.
CO one still has less than 100k miles. It's a time capsule.

I always wondered what the damage multiplier was good for. Now I know. To prop skis up against!
Exactly! Technically the 94 is my wife's and she likes the brush guard. That's why the 97 has an ARB. So I guess we have his and hers 80's.

I would guess I've spent a couple hundred hours driving and working on my 80 in the last year - most of which have been entirely entertaining and/or satisfying. I have a family member with a $180/hour shrink. I think my cost is below that number and it'll continue to drop as I head to Cruise Moab unless I break some sh*t out there.

Agreed! My 80s are my therapy. I spent an hour last night tearing about my spare 1FZ-FE that I'm rebuilding. Incredibly relaxing.

In the interest of adding to the sample size - I've owned my 97 LX450 since 2010 and I've got about $16,500 in purchase cost and necessary repairs/upkeep....and another $4500 in "unnecessary" additions/expenses :)

If you're on this site enough, it is very difficult to avoid "unnecessary" expenses.

I really like your spreadsheet but I'm curious from your link to the blog post - what is the Target column (F) in the Parts tab?

a few months ago I posted on a post about the repairs on an 80 series needed to reach 200,000 miles and about 3 people said that's not normal and most 80 series didn't need those kinds of repairs. *rolls* eyes. they do.

This is what may need to be done to get an fzj80 to 200,000 miles. This is what I have done to my 1997 FZJ80

to reach 200,000 miles for an fzj80 this is what would have needed to be done:
Distributor cap
rotor
cables
front and rear brakes- pads and rotors maybe calipers, perhaps brake master cylinder
02 sensors
plugs
air filter
*address the phh or do a bypass
shocks (not a lift, just shocks about 2 times)
head cover gasket (not head gasket, just cover gasket) and seals
radiator and cap
coolant flush
I forget the name but the valve by the firewall that connects to the various hoses
02 sensors maybe exhaust depending
Power Steering Pump Rebuild
Power Steering Hoses
Alternator
Starter (possibly)
A/C Compressor/Dryer (possibly)
Rear heater lines (possibly)
Vacuum Hoses and other hoses
Tires (possibly)
Charcoal Canister
Updating sound/ speakers, headunit, amp (?)
Crankshaft Seal
Possibly Rear Main Seal
Brakes- May be pads/rotors/calipers depending what has or has not been done.

I would give my left nut to be 33 again

iDK how old you guys are ( @baldilocks too ) - but me & 2 of my ‘non-blood brother’ - heard me say I sit on my balls more than I use them much anymore. — It got a full laugh, but we all knew the ring of truth in that.
Hell, that was a simple sober lunchtalk convo since we all still had things to handle after that.

No joke.

The initial convo was how I either go ‘full commando’ or whatever they call the ‘8” leg version of tighty-whiteys’ - if I am out in the boat or wherever socially fine, I freeball it - if I’m getting in & out of seats, I’ll wear the shorts so I don’t sit on or roll a nut.

Both of them laughed, but only Luke (a young late 30’s) - still wears boxers, my lifelong buddy wears the same 8” inseam ‘tight/white’-style as me. The waistbands may have a brand or the material can be fancy color elastic, but him & me wear the same stuff. Keep the boys in check.
We’re both mid/late 40’s.

As long as I could still swing it like I was 30 or 33, I’d give the full sack.
These days they are a pair of 15# downriggers, esp on a warm day.

i'm 34 now... 35 later this year. soon I'll get rid of all land cruisers and drive something sensible and save my money for when I can't move anymore I can have someone wipe my ass and jack me off if even works by then.

Lighten up Francis. I’m 52 and still riding high in the saddle everyday and I’ll quit when my body says quit. Don’t sell yourself short. No puns intended.
