Replaced blown head gasket

Just finished today, seems to run fine again. The exhaust was blowing into the coolant and causing tons of overheating problems.

I am in the process of doing some damage repairs and painting the doors to match. 1 door done and 1 half way I will post pictures of the finished product soon.

Never cared for the black door looks so they will be all white to match by the end of the week.

Put the soft top back on to get ready for Tropical Depression #3

IH8 Hurricane season!!:crybaby:

picked up a real nice set of powder coated OEM springs on Tuesday from a fellow MUDDER and friend. And my friend Sambo helped me intall the front 2 today.......did i mention it was a freaking 100 degrees in a barn/shop in Gawja today.......:o

got rid of the cruiser lean on my fjj40...........it was so bad on the pasenger side due to a weak/damaged spring. Picked up the passenger side a full 1 1/2 inches( notice the 1 1/2 inches of rusty shock, where i had painted them:D), and the drivers side a 1/2 inch...............lot of work in the heat ---but in turned out nice and safer for sure.

after the install we took it a little ride in " the twisted pines farm" to check out a few places to bowhunt this fall.

Replaced pinion seal on rear axle. New gasket on front warn hub.

Looking forward to getting parts to install Asian hubs that are sitting on shelf (cone washers and studs).

Installed Posers rear disk brakes, and an Ausssie locker...it works!

Took the 77FJ40 out for a little climb up the mountain near my house. Found out that the clutch may need a little work. Also i found out that when i park on a 45 ish incline my gas tank leaks.

Got the rear axle located, hangers welded in and DC drive shaft in.
Its an FJ60 rear with FJ60 springs flipped. Needed a LOOOONG WB to allow for my NP203/ 19 spline split case.:grinpimp:

New steering components

Replaced, rebuilt all the steering components from the pitman arm to the wheels.

Handles much better now. I had been running the tires at about 25 psi to avoid death wobble at 50 mph when they were at 32 psi. Now, tires are at 32 for road driving, no death wobble, no under- or oversteer, and no tendency to jump around the road. It'll get the off-road test on Red Cone this Saturday.

I will try a couple bigger pictures, these are hard to see

With every project I am more amazed with these vehicles, and this web site.

I replaced all tie rod ends, and rebuilt the drag link end (that was pretty cool engineering) then did a “rough“ setting of the alignment on my Dec ’74 FJ40.

This morning I figured I better bring it to the shop for a true alignment. I called a couple local shops and they said they could not do a ’74. Found one that said yes but they were 15 miles of city driving away and in 100 F heat with no top that did not sound like fun, plus I hate waiting there. While I was making the calls I figurred I will check mud and see if a home made alignment is sufficient. Sure enough a quick search for “alignment” and I saw plenty of positive feedback reassuring me it was worth a shot.

Took me about an hour and I had all parts set to factory spans (Tie rod, relay rod, drag link). Went out for a test drive and it was straight and stable. Had it up to 70 mph for the first time and felt good. Now when I have time I will see if I can figure Toe in, etc.

I did try an all square check to look at rear axels as well. While on the floor I wrapped a string around all four tires, 15 “off the ground (the lugs on the tread help tem in place. In theory, the string should touch each tire in 2 spots on the outside side wall, except for any toe in or toe out. What I found is the rear axel is out of square a bit, so I will need to address that.

Thanks to you guys who make the posts and keep the archives. It has saved me $$$ and lots of time

Installed some vinyl hood blackouts to reduce glare, added $OR headliner, and overhead console. Also added a soudproof/ thermal barrier from CCOT in rear of cruiser and now need to do up front as well but thats alot more stuff to take off to do so.
