Changing rear springs again after 23 years of abuse the 2.5 Rancho softride springs lost an eye and its impossible to get a spare.

Tried to mix the pack with a oem main leaf.......to short as you see.

So i ordered a set of OME rear springs and started to work.

Seems to be ok but location of the center bolt is different, about 1" to the front with the axle...
Guess everything will be fine if both sides are done.

Time to flip the rear spring pack, extend wheel base.
Some lifts really stuff the rear axle in the front of the opening!

The flip is too drastic. Just drill a new hole in the perch.

True, if i just turn them it will be about 4" difference......2much.

I will measure tomorrow what the actual difference in wheelbase is between Rancho vs OME, if it sucks i will drill a new hole as recommended.

Got the Paki-top back after having both rear zippers replaced. Also made a cheap pair of 'factory soft top safety straps'.

I used two 8mm x 100 stainless bolts with nuts and washers and sewed the straps myself.

The strap uses the upper door hinge pin in front and the modified bolt is threaded into the upper bolt hole in the striker plate. I threaded it in until it bottomed out, un-screwed it til it was oriented correctly then tightened the nut / washer.

Love the "No Step", where'd you get it?

A friend that's an aircraft mechanic gave it to me. They're pretty common on helicopters; lot's of places to avoid putting your feet.
I put it on there after I stepped on the tank and caused a leak.:whoops:

I love the flip, changes the way the 40 rides.
You have to cut the rear opening, but it looks like where it should have been located all along (at least with my 33's and 4" lift).

Tell me about the flip?

I added a new stereo, amp and four speakers, took the doors off, added the seat bracket kit giving me a few more inches of leg room, bought a new steering coupler that I have not gotten installed yet. I also took it shooting at a friends ranch Monday afternoon! PG

The rear spring pack flip - a very nice mod!
Gives better departure angle.
I discuss this in my lift thread:

Page 1 and 4 have the best pics.
Good luck!

Finally finished fabricating my spare tire carrier!! I'm actually really happy with how it turned out......so was my brother, now I have to make him one!

Tire carrier looks good, however it's not really noticeable in the pics if the spindle is welded through the 2" square tube or if its just butt welded. Butt welding won't be able to handle the sheer forces applied to the spindle with the weight of tire and it bouncing around back there.

Realised I'm a bloody idiot for not properly measuring the height of the rollbar before finishing off all the welds and bolting her into place. I had the intention of having the roof on, with the rollbar only fitted in case I want to run without it.

So I spent the public holiday (ANZAC Day) today grinding the rollbar down and rewelding the supporting plates. Let this be a lesson to you, don't assume measurements you find on the forums are right, if you have the means check it out first!

Thanks! The spindle sits down inside the square tubing and is welded at the top and bottom and vertically on either side inside the tubing. I'll be surprised if it goes anywhere. Plus the swingarm is fully supported on the right side as well so the only time the spindle is baring the full weight is when opened

It looks like you can see the heat penetration where he welded at least down the spindle. x2 on it looking good!

Sent from deep in the mountains of Honduras using only sticks and rocks.

- ordered Trollhole carb
- ordered factory air cleaner and new filter for above
- bought aluminum valve cover and gasket
- bought jump seats
- bought new rear door (current one has cancer)
- ordered spare tire bumper
- bought RUST FREE fromdoor shells
- ordered new gaskets for above doors

Sent my hubcaps to re-hab

Changing back to steelies, and I have a set of "Sunday-go-to-meetin," hubcaps still in bubble wrap, but thought that I'd try and rehabilitate a set from my old '55 for everyday use. Considering that I thought that they were beyond hope, they didn't turn out too bad. Also changed out the seat belts and ordered a new ignition switch cable.
