My yearly tax bill for the '70 40 was $85 until I changed the plates to antique vehicle status. Dropped it down to $15 then the city I live in adds a $20 vehicle fee. No restrictions on mileage or use here so this is a good way to lessen the tax burden.

Really, quit your bitching! --- Just Kidding. For the privilege of living in the golden state I get to pay $80.00 every other year for an emissions test ( shops charge extra for a pre-2000 vehicle) and this years registration fees for a 41 year old truck were $139.00. This is for the worst condition, most crowded roads in the nation where we already pay the highest state gas taxes in the nation!! You guys think your state robs you!!

All the states, counties and cities rob us blind with every conceivable tax they can come up with. The license renewal for my 2017 Ford Flex arrived a few weeks ago and the county tax dept valued it $5000 higher than it should have been. When I called about it, after a brief hold, the nice lady said she saw they didn't go by what I actually paid for it 9 months earlier. Legal theft! I wonder how many times this goes unquestioned.

Used the 40 to scarf up some left-over sod from a landscaping job nearby. They over-ordered and I had some dead spots in the yard that needed re-sodding; and rain was in the forecast - all planets were aligned.

When I moved to Maryland I had to pay sales tax on my 2009 Mazda 3 that I'd owned for 7 years. It has 140,000 miles, bent wheel, no AC, paint peeling, and rust starting in the rear fender well from a life parked outside - was probably worth $3000-$3500 tops and even that is generous. Even though I even through a check engine code the day of inspection for a failed MAF sensor - I had to pay 6% sales tax on the "Excellent Condition Blue Book Value" of my car (at the time around $10,000) in order to register it in Maryland. So I ended up owing the DMV $600 in tax on my (bought, paid for, and very used) vehicle, plus $152 2-year registration fee, plus $40 safety inspection, and a $15 fee to re-run the OBDII for emissions after I fixed the MAF and a $25 title transfer fee.

All told - it cost over $800 to drive my 7 year old beater car over the state line between Delaware and MD and have it registered.

Anyway - someone post some tech so we can get off this subject!

When I moved there in 08 I had to pay the sales tax on my 04 Ram 3500, they blue booked it at something like 35K, 6% of that, I was pissed. I owned it outright, title in hand. The thought of paying taxes on something that I already owned burned my ass, that set the stage early for me living there.

Tech

I cut some material to keep the metal to metal contact down when installing my rack.

Should have moved to DE... Registration used to be $20 per year and you could pay upfront for 5 years of plates. Not sure what it is now. The powers that be probably got wind of all the fees MD was raking in and squashed the good deal.

I moved from DE to MD. The only problem with DE is any car produced after 1972 has to pass emissions - since my truck is a V8 converted 75 with no emissions controls it made getting through inspection...challenging.

One it passed I antiqued it so it never needed to pass again.

The good news is in MD the 40 only needs safety inspection.

A friend called and said "I have stuff for you"......price was right to take it all so I headed over

Had some time today to tackle the fuel tank. It's in pretty decent shape, with only minimal surface rust inside and the outside had one spot that was pitted.

I poured a gallon of Evapo-Rust in the tank, let it sit overnight and it came out pretty good. The picture is before the Evapo-Rust.

Then I scraped all of the PO's rubber undercoater and paint off the outside, used POR15 Metal -Ready, then brushed on POR15.

First coat on one side done.

Cranked up the AC...
Love driving it like this...

It's like riding a motorcycle! (which I used to do all the time)

Took the old FJ40 out on the freeway for the first time. I was a little worried but it actually did very well. Cruised at 60 pretty well even while it was windy.

Went out to my brother-in-law's property and had a crab, shrimp, boil that turned out amazing.

The kids loved using my FJ40 to build their blanket forts and climb all over the place. This is what it is all about!
