What engine oil are you running?

To answer the two above questions.

1) Royal Purple has shown less than stellar UOA results. Additionally it is a Group III oil, which makes it very high priced for what you get. Do a search and you will find the answer.

2) Delo 400- Your right, check the FAQ. In short, 40 weight oils are ideal for the LC engine. Delo as a fleet vehicle oil has a roboust additive package and a high grade Group II+ mineral oil stock. Wear numbers have been consistantly very good with that oil. Also, many European manufactures recommended these Fleet oils as their recommended oil for years because of their superior durablity compared to most mineral oils. That said, any name brand SL or SM oil in the appropriate weight (5w-30, 10w-30, 10w-40, 15w-40) will provide more than adequate protection for a stock 80 engine in 99.99% of situations.

20w50 Valvoline year around in all my vehicles.

You might think of changing that after you move up here. the 20-50W will be awfully thick in the cold mtns where you are moving.

Toyota oil & Mobil oil pressure difference

I have been using Toyota 5w 30w which I have never used before but thought as it is Toyota oil, it would be fine for the engine, when I was putting the oil in the engine I did notice how thin it was compared to other oils I have used in the past, which had me frowning.

I have had the toyota oil in the engine for the last 1000 miles and have noticed from from the start that on cold start ups the front engine rattle has been the worst I have heard it in the 5 years I have had the car.

The oil pressure has also been the lowest I have ever seen it to! so went out today and bought 10ltrs of Mobil M engine oil which is 10w 40w here in the UK the temp very rarely drops below -3 and if it does, it would only be about 6 days in the whole of winter and the temp very rarely goes higher than 24 degrese.

I took a photo of the oil pressure the other day with the Toyota 5w 30w and also a photo today with the Mobil 10w 40w both times the engine had run for well over 30 miles so was fully at its operating temp, look at the difference in gauge pressure.

Mobil 1 here in the UK is £45 a gallon! compared to £15 for the Mobil M a gallon

That would be a lot!

Mobil 1 here is about $22 for 1 gallon, so that's 11 English Pounds or so. There's probably a business in buying Mobil1 at WalMart and shipping it to UK for limey Cruiserheads.:D

Do you guys get realy good deals on Casterol?

(Check sig line) Amsoil 10W-30 in Central Oregon, 3600 ft.(elev). Run Amsoil full flow and bypass filters, both changed every 6 months. Oil and filters changed every 3rd year. Time is at least as much of a consideration for change interval as mileage. If your rig is not a DD and you are basing your change interval on mileage alone, you could be harming your engine. Water from condensation forms inside your engine (more so in vehicles parked outdoors) and mixes with the contaminents in your oil. This forms an acid that attacks the bearings in your engine. This happens regardless of the rig being driven or not, and regardless of using synthetic oil or dino. So take this into consideration when calculating your change interval. The trick to enjoying the advantages of synthetic oil as an extended change oil is to be able to minimize contaminents and water. A bypass filter system can be run to help. In mine, the full flow does the job of the normal oil filter meaning, all oil from the oil pump flows through this filter (hence the name: full flow). The bypass filter samples oil through it more slowly. In my system, it takes about 20 minutes for all of the oil to pass through at approx. 2K RPM. It will filter out both water and foreign particles as small as 2 microns. No system is perfect, but this is about the the best protection you can provide from a lubrication standpoint, IMHO. :wrench: FWIW

Edit: I must also mention, using an oil analysis program, such as Blackstone or Amsoil to check your work, would be wise.

I heard some where that since hurricane Katrina, M1 is a lesser quality of oil. Is this true? I am running Shell Rotella 5W-40 synthetic, walmart priced $22.00(4qt jug). I am pleased with the Rotella but find after about 3000 miles my 80 starts to consume oil (no noticeable consumption with new oil). Any one else experience this type of delayed consumption? I think I could save a little by getting it at Schucks (they beat competitors prices by 5%), but would love to know of an even cheaper vendor. Also, is 9000 miles the suggested oil change interval when using fully synthetic? http://images.ih8mud.com/images/secretsmilies/hillbilly.gif thanks, Derek

No truth to that. Still good stuff. Every few months someone starts a rumor that Mobil1 is "lesser stuff". It's actually the Rotella and Casterol that are the "lesser stuff" since they are group III oils, not group IV like Mobil1. No big, as FirstToy points out, the 80 is not demanding on motor oil and any old oil will work fine. The key is to have a schedule (time or distance) and stick to it like glue. My interval is 5000 miles because it's easy to remember and it's about 1 year worth of 80 driving. I'm running Mobil1 10W-40 High Mileage-more robust additive pack than the 0W-40, and the pressure on the gauge is a bit higher. I've previously run 0W-40 for years. My other older trucks mostly get Chevron Delo 15w-40.

15w 40 Lubrication engineers blend Been using L/E in all vehicles wheeled, water bound etc diesel/gas the stuff is amazing. it has tremendous adhesion properties so it minimizes upper end wear @ start up

10W30 Mobil One all year in Puerto Rico.:wrench:

I have done a few cold starts and just to let you know, since changing the oil to the Mobil M 10w 40w the start up rattle has completly gone!!! and I have had that rattle ever since I have had the car 4 years at least.

I have changed to different types of oil in the past to try and eliminate the rattle, which some have to a varying degree, the worst for the rattle was the last oil Toyota 5w 30w but the new oil that is in it now it is silent!!! me a happy man with Mobil M and think I will stick with it, maybe my front end oil leaks will stop too :-)
