What engine oil are you running?

For those of you in cold climates, you should not be using a 15-40 oil in temps below 30f. Switch to a 5w or 0w oil for winter.

Will switch when it gets to below 30f.

I finally found the M1 0w40 locally (Toronto) and it seems fine... no start-up rattle (of course I didn't have it before either... knock on wood) - this went in in preparation for our winter weather which can be anywhere from "just around freezing" to real unpleasant..regardless there will be lots of salt even when the roads don't need it - I think the municipalities around here work on a "use it or lose it" budget.

Anyway the 0w40 does not have the SAE "donut" ....nor does the product shot on Mobils web site...wonder what ths really means... also they are selling M1 5w50 (synthetic) here as well now.- never saw it before last week - ...not listed on the Mobil site and was wondering what folks thought of it??

Summer months (hot)- Castrol GTX/Valvoline/Parts Plus 10W30 HM

Rest of the year (cold)- Kendall 5W30 HM, from work; inexpensive but good. Starts to smell really bad when it gets dirty so you know when to change it.

The SAE donut you are speaking about is the one that makes for a "fuel saving oil" and is usually only seen on 30 weights or 20 weight oils. Don't worry about it, it has nothing to do with the quality of an oil. Take a look in the FAQ or Bobistheoilguy.com for more information.

I use Chevron 10w-40 for both trucks. Since I deligently change oil every 3-4k anyway, so I don't see any reason to use a more expensive synthetic oil. And yes, I use genuine Toyota oil filters.

10-40 dino. 3000 mile intervals. It's about a push for M1 at 10K intervals price wise. I like to go over the truck every few months any way.

When I did use M1 I got leaks. Went back to dino and they stopped.

0W-40 M1 in my Valkryie and will in my FJC

Ditto

Mobil 1, 0W-40 during the summer, 5W-30 during the winter. Change out every 7500-ish miles.

PO only uses 5-30 Mobile 1 Syn every 10K(mostly freeway), and new filter every 5k.

I will probably do similar or shortern the interval.

This what I've been doing ever since Ben Franklin told me it was a good way to operate.

I have used both 5w-30 and 10w-30 as IIRC are the primary weights in the manual for non-extreme driving conditions. In Seattle typically we don't see temps below 0 degrees F so I now use Mobil 1 10w-30 all year around.

I have the LX 450 with 86xxx miles. Just put Valvoline 5-30 in (8 quarts). I have run Valvoline in all my wheelers and rigs (M715, Chevy Blazer, Samurais) Chevy truck and Ford truck with great success. I usually change it at 3000 miles. Live in MN.

Please define "great success."

I've been told by a non-cruiserhead that one should run a single brand of oil and stick with it. Rotella, Castrol, etc. The additives that each company puts in are different and this is a large contributor to sludge build up.

I have always run Castrol GTX.

M1 5W-30 in winter. Can see temps 20 below, but for a garage kept rig that isn't the biggest deal. Probably 5W-30 year round since I only see about 6K miles per year and will change at 5K-7.5K intervals.
