Just got home from work and took a couple more pictures. It’s starting on the other side now too and, you can’t really tell in the picture but , the paint is all starting to spiderweb. I gotta say, this really pisses me off. PLEASE DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON DOBINSON’S BUMPERS!

That’s pretty bad. Gonna need to blast and repowder. That sucks.

Yeah, $2240 for the bumper then $600 for shipping to AK and the paint starts falling off within two weeks. I immediately contacted Dobinsons and sent them multiple pictures, etc. and they absolutely refused to take responsibility. At this point, I wouldn't own another Dobinsons product if it was free, I just wish I would have taken multiple peoples advice and went with ARB all the way around. It would have cost me more initially but, I know I wouldn't be dealing with all the BS I'm going to have to deal with now.

That is lack of surface prep by the powder coater.

I would sand that down and hit it with a rust dissolver, followed by a good primer, and top coat. Sucks, but you have to keep the rust at bay.

I have a very old TJM front bumper for my 1985 4Runner and the powder coat is fine. Not as shiny as new, but perfectly intact.

I would add that there doesn’t look to be a wear plate on the corner where the pin rides. If the pin just slides on the powder coat it will wear it off faster.

Cheers

That's what the Dobinsons rep suggested what happened. He said that I didn't adjust the pin correctly but, I explained to him that the pin never even comes close to rubbing, and even sent him close up photos and video of there being over 1/4" space between the pin and bumper. You can even see in the closeup photo that the pin never comes close to touching the bumper, although in the picture I took last night, because of the rust, it all kind of blends together so it's harder to see. Anyway, the rep basically stated that he couldn't think of any other way that the paint would start chipping off because it was most definitely not their fault. Everything is chipping away now, even the top of the pin, that's now covered in rust. Keep in mind, this bumper is only about a year old and I rarely if ever drive the vehicle in the winter.

Yeah, just hoping to save someone else the grief.
Feel for you, that has to be terrible. I’d strip it down, prime and paint. It will be so much easier to touch up if that’s needed in the future

My 80's cooling system holds pressure for many days after last being driven. Is this abnormal/worrisome? I can unscrew the radiator cap a week after having driven it and it spews a little coolant out. It's done this for as long as I can remember. Head gasket was done around 2 years ago and radiator/radiator cap are OEM.

Took our rig up to Detroit this weekend, and then back home... Still working out a few gremlins, but the old girl got us home.

Edit... Guess that I should add a pic...

The view from the place where we had a big ol' birthday party for my bud's son... On the shores of Lake St. Clair.

Productive weekend!

  1. My new Lantank rear sway bar links were worth every penny... they silenced all the little clinks and clanks in the suspension, even what I perceived as from the front. I'm not quite sure yet, but I think it might be braking straighter, too.
  2. I found the loud clattering in the hatch... it turned out to be my pack shovel. Easiest rattle repair ever!
  3. I've now driven five times in a row with no driveline squeak! I'm thinking is was a clogged u-joint channel, and the last greasing finally broke through after a couple drives.

And there are some dealers screaming..."buy Dobinson's before the tariff price increase!! (increasing for the n'th time...so tariffs are an excuse)...buy Made in America anyway! That sucks you are having that problem and even worse they won't do anything about it.

Went back to the RTT life. I said after my last RTT I would never own one again. But with an Alaska trip coming up and no time/want to convert the cruiser back into a camper I decieded to go this route. As far as RTT go, I am pretty happy with it. It has good build quality and is 4.5 inches when shut and relatively light weight. I had a really windy first night and the wind fly was flapping like crazy. Hopefully can get creative with a remedy for that.

Looks great. How does it attach to your gutter mounts?

Thanks! I use the Gamaviti Gutter mounts (which are incredibly well made). Drilled into the bottom of the RTT Frame and used some big washers on the inside of the tent. The tent isn't resting on the roof and I see no give in the floor of the tent when I have thrown two people up in the tent. The bottom of the tent has a panel of aluminum and two roof rack channels that run from the back of the tent to the front. Seems solid

Coolant lines failed Friday night. Woke up to a puddle Saturday morning
Had to jury-rigged a solution
Fuel line cut to size. Hose clamps applied to get rid of pinching.
Working for now
Replacement hoses ordered today, arriving Wednesday
Jury rigged?

😱
