What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend? (49 Viewers)

Drove 1200 miles round trip from VA to CT and back... First 1/2 of the trip was without A/C. Stopped at friends garage in CT, his advice was to evac it and do a full diagnostic. Did not do that, just a recharge. Did a LOF, and while it was up in the air tightened the 4 nuts that hold the steering arm on and lower knuckle bearing in... not sure how long they were loose, but they were. Check your nuts! Also, while putting the truck up in the air - there was a certain height before the wheels lifted off the ground where I was like... THAT's the height it should be at.

Suspecting a rear pinion seal leak judging by the amount of oil coating the rear end and undercarriage. The exhaust system - flanges and gasket on both sides of cats are shot. It is time to invest some R&R maintenance. VC gasket is shot. Needs new tires in front and an alignment. Cruise control stopped working for some reason on the way back, but no biggie... my foot rests comfortably around 2600-ish RPM/70mph.

Oh... discovered my sunroof leaks if parked downhill during torrential rain. PS seat, headliner and floor soaked this morning. Will need to need to clean the sunroof gaskets, drains etc.

Visited parents, brother and a cousin. Helped my brother deliver a chicken coop - which would have been painful if he tried to drag his trailer to where the coop needed to be placed with his GMC.

Nothing fell off, nothing caught fire, I didn't break anything, no one died. All in all a great trip and time spent with fam. Gas prices were basically 2.99-3.2x all along the trip for 87. Mine was the only 94-ish LC I saw on the whole trip.

Figured out how to make braking and acceleration feel way faster without changing or adding any parts. Just take the 80 on a 3500 mile road trip, including elevation, while full of gear and pulling a popup camper. When I got back to 600 feet and unloaded the 80 felt like it was tranformed ;)

Finished up an interior restoration of my 80. New leather covers front and back from Lseat (mixed reviews), removal and deep clean of the original carpets, headliner and plastic/vinyl interior panel scrub down, new radio with backup camera to finally retire the original tape deck. It’s almost like a brand new Land Cruiser inside now!

Awesome job Jen!...its looks great ;)

dang-it, who posted that home shop caster measure/correction jig? I'm assuming I can do the same thing with some 1x1 "L" steel?

Thanks. They're great. Definitely recommend them. They aren't even their "good" ones.
Damn. Sure beats the $300 crap you would see in audio shops of the 90's. They were pathetic.

Finally mustered up the courage to tackle the factory (port, really) roof rack delete. Mine is a 93, so JB Weld it was. Still managed to set the insulation crap on fire for a bit when grinding.

Last week I completed removing the rack and patching the holes (no pictures). Today, the ribs were on the cruiser to-do list.

Drilling out the nutserts:

Grinding down to the bare metal:

Filling in the hole and dent with epoxy:

Lessons learned:
  1. There no need to drill out the entire nutsert and leave a big hole. Rather, just drill enough to remove the top spinny part and a bit of recess.
  2. Grind first (to bare metal) and then punch down to create a dimple (dent) to fill in, not the other way around. Much easier grinding that way.
  3. The insulation material between the roof and the liner will catch fire when sparks fly into the hole. It smokes a lot, so you'll know soon enough. Blowing it out and covering the hole worked for me, but you may want to keep a fire extinguisher within reach.
  4. Remove dust and grease. All of it. My favorite degreaser is white gas.
  5. Even when the JB Weld has the consistency of peanut butter, it will still sink into the nutsert. I ended up using a piece of fiberglass mesh (the kind you'd use on drywall) to prevent this, but I suppose a piece of scrap metal (DE razor blade?) might even be better - as long as you can hide it under the surface.

I was in the dash wiring the switch pro today are really thought hard about yanking the old tape deck but decided I still use it too much to hang the phone on, I cram the corner of the phone in the tape deck and it works great as a holder LOL :hillbilly:

Very amazing, 😍

Added a diode to the new Hopkins trailer wiring harness to stop it from kicking cruise control off when I signaled. Figured it was back-feeding the brake circuit through the box due to the LEDs? Don’t judge me on my soldering skills (or lack thereof).

What diode did you I use? I need to do this too. Thanks

Oops should have read one more post further :bang:
