What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend? (25 Viewers)

This is for your cig lighter illumination. I just fixed mine this weekend. The bracket that it connects to on the bottom back of the cig lighter is flimsy and often breaks.

The 90 degree angle plug is the pos/neg for your cig lighter.
Thanks. I bet my bracket is broken hence the reason it’s just hanging there.

Here’s a bad picture of it. If you look closely, you can see my JB Weld 5 minute epoxy fix.

Had a chance after the holidays to begin the baselining process on the white cruiser. All stuff I had done before, just ime consuming.

Radiator
All Raditor hoses
Top of engine hoses
Blue fan clutch
Oil pump gasket
Front main seal
Water pump
New idler pulleys
Belts
Dizzy o-ring
Dizzy cap, gasket and rotor
Plugs
Wires
Air Filter
Clean tuna can
Clean intake and throttle body
Hood and hatch struts
Wiper blades

I think that covers it. Went fairly smooth other than a sticky crank bolt. Almost certain that none of the hoses or bolts had ever been apart since factory install. I had to slice many of them open and peel them off.

Stupid crank bolt was a serious PITA. Bump method failed maybe a dozen times. Ended up grabbing a flywheel bolt and taking a breaker bar to it, then some lube and finally able to bump it free. Cracked a deep well 14mm socket in 2 spots and rounded off the flywheel nut pretty well ... balls.

Tuna can looks like it hasn't been checked in years. Sadly, this is the closest I've ever been to Idaho.

Looks like a valve cover gasket and some new spark plug grommets are going to be needed. Still unsuccessful at changing the #6 plug w/o swearing. #lifegoals

While its not the weekend yet, I feel compelled to share this profound moment with my fellow mudders...
Now I try to not have too many stupids a day but I might have met my annual quota already with this one.
When I purchased my 91 FJ80 from the PO he mentioned the left turn signal "interfered with the radio sometimes..." I thought that was odd but figured it was just a grounding issue or maybe a loose wire. Keeping that in mind I replaced the head unit with a Kendwood that's amazing! I checked all wires and everything was good in stereo land. About this same time my wife mentioned that I had a tail light out, again didnt put much stock in it at this point since there was soooooo may other issues I had found already. A few months go by the base-lining process is coming along very well and all is good. Then I notice a corner marker light is out and decide its time to replace and check all bulbs. I also checked all the wiring at the same time since it needed to be done as the PO didn't exactly do things to the same standard I do. What I found was painful...
Turns out the light that was out on the Kaymar bumper (my wife had mentioned a couple months ago) was actually shorted from "someone" trying to remove it unsuccessfully... This was causing the blinker relay to screech when using the left turn signal...

so um yeah... i feel like a moron since the thing I despise most (not replacing a bulb that's out) is the thing i did and got exactly what I deserve...

At the same time I was trying to chase down why my Voltage indicator was diping so hard when I used my turn signals... Duhhh...

Resolution: I replaced the damaged bulbs, added a few extra ground wires.
Result: Everything works great, volt meter is actually a little bit higher and the truck actually starts and runs better!

Found a way to mount a hi-lift on the factory tire carrier. Fingers crossed for no tail light obstruction pull-overs.

Tried to repair the auto-folding feature on the mirrors. Its a lost cause. Limiting sensor is broken. Disconnected power and put them back together, may look at them another day when I have more patience. The whole assembly seems sketchy.

And after getting locked out of the cruiser a second time, decided to finally fix my locks. Got new keys from Lexus based on the key code on the cylinders, but same story, works in ignition but not doors. Soooo now I get to have the cylinders rebuilt. Fun fun.

There was an option in some market for power-fold mirrors? :bounce::bounce2::bounce::bounce2:

Rang in the New Year in Death Valley. Trona-Mengal Pass-Racetrack-Saline Hotsprings-South Pass. First trip with my 4x4Labs bumper, love it!

I assumed they all had em. But I guess its jdm. Maybe its something to mess around with after all now I know they're special, hah. But they are really quite fragile IMO. I could fix them to factory spec and still imagine them falling apart shortly thereafter. Seem to remember Beno telling me they were designed by a 3rd party (not Toyota).

which vehicle get the better gas mileage?love the color on the 80

Better gas mileage . I think the color is a Lexus color, I did not pick it out when we had the 80 repainted.

Performed a fluids change today...it just feels so good to pour in those new fluids!

My Cruiser has 244k on the clock with me putting just a few thousand on myself in the last 1.5 yrs of ownership. It does a lot of time in the garage but I plan on driving/playing with it more this year so I figured an annual fluids change would be good.

  • Pennzoil 10W-40
  • Redline D4 ATF (drained 5, replaced with 5)
  • Mobil 1 75W-90 gear oil for the front diff, transfer case, and...uh oh, that's where the problems started
The rear diff is way more rusty than I remember and it's been impossible to get both diff plugs loose so far (started with PB Blaster with no effect so gonna try a 50/50 mix of acetone/ATF). What's everyone's thoughts on the condition of the rear axle?

The pumpkin itself isn't that bad I guess but it sure did "flake off" quite a bit when I was hammering on the plugs. The panhard and shock mounts seem to be the worst...just look at the nut in the last picture. The truck did spend some time up North (Chicago) but for the most part has been a Southern truck. The rest of the underneath doesn't look that bad except for the hitch receiver and spare tire location so I'm assuming that the rear of the truck is what needs some attention.

Have you tried using a large breaker bar and bumping the engine over to break that bolt loose?

My import's got them too. I too thought they all had 'em.
