Last weekend was our annual snow camping trip. Was good to hang out with friends old and new and have great conversation by the fire with @Ridgemaster and others!
We even ran into @Diggs84 and Eric (sorry I forgot your MUD handle) on the way out.

Cheers,
Salue

Need another new friend for next year? :) Looks like a good time.

Finally swapped out my bent-ass fender for a non-dented one. I managed to buy some unicorn 40th anniversary parts a while back, haven't taken the time to bolt them on yet. First up, a sage 40th fender.

Also deleted the OEM roof rack and took measurements to build my own custom rack. Similar to a Prinsu, but designed specifically for a roof top tent with an ultra-low mounting clearance and easy, slide off the rear removal of the tent. Getting Costa fabrications @RDC76 to plasma cut some metal for me for my rack idea!

If you're willing to drive up from Portland(?), I'll definitely keep you in the loop. Heck, I'm sure we can plan something before that too. Plus we need another 'Jason' to take @Ridgemaster place since he's moving to Texas. I forgot, what are your thoughts on Texas @LS1FJ40? :p

Cheers,
Salue

Warmed up the shop and had the cruiser all dried off yesterday. Today I greased up the u-joints and prop shafts. Then loaded up my moly gun and shot some fresh moly into the knucks. Wheel bearings still felt like they were holding preload. Then tried cleaning my drains. They were clear, but my floor boards were wet. Pulled the drain plug for the drivers wire channel next to the door. It rained pretty good. Its time for a new windshield... I already have an oem widshield gasket. .

Tore down the front end for the typical birf rebuild, only to discover I need to replace the birfields. Uhg. Well, at least I got to spend some good quality time with my son and teach him the inner workings of a CV joint.

What is the bitf rebuild&

Pew... I'd was planning to start putting things back together but decided to take most everything else off. Pulled everything mounted on the inner fenders then outer and inner fenders and the front clip frame. Removed the rear bumper wings. Then moved to pulling the fuel tank, fuel lines, brake line rear spare mount and locator rod. Pulled all the ABS cables. Then removed the seats and carpet. Yesterday I found out how bad the rust in the front of the rear wheel arcs is. I got it back on its tires first time since summer. I'm thinking about having a buddy w a roll back pick it up and take it to another friends who has a lift so i can pull the body off so i can have the frame blasted and spray it with a 2 part epoxy chassis paint. I decided I'd rather take another month or two to do it right now to avoid further rust issues in the future. I'm glad I pulled the carpet as i found some heavy surface rust on both front floor pans. Need to pick up a big pack of abrasive pads for my grinder. I'm going to also remove all the oem deadener while I'm at it to check for more rust then I'll put down some buytle or a spray deadener down.

Bonus question, What is this that was under the passenger front carpet?

That unit he's holding is the birfield joint or "Knuckle". If you've ever heard clicking from the front when you are turning under load then you've heard your birfs. Lots of threads and even a few videos about rebuilding them.

What is wrong with the birf in your pic? I don't see anything that looks out of the ordinary...?

Its the inside that's worn. Specially the star and outer race. I started a thread on this earlier today when I was hoping it could be just reused as is.

You're correct on that being the birfield, but the knuckle is the outer part you put the birfield inside...the part that allows steering of the axle.

These are knuckles. (aftermarket ones, but you get the idea)

Thanks for clarifying.

Finally got the new head unit, speakers, sub, amplifiers, and back-up camera installed in my Fj80. The only thing left is figuring out which wire is the reverse signal from the shifter so I can get the back-up camera function going on the head unit.
There's a ridiculous amount of wires stuffed behind the head unit...
I think I have a screw left over from the dash assembly... ugh.

A major milestone in the life of my 80. I installed my new third members, replaced the birfs, rebuilt knuckles, installed high performance rotors and brake pads.

Thirds were upgraded with Harrop eLockers and 4:88 Sierra Gears. Brakes, birfs and knuckle kit were Terrain Tamer.

Thanks to Cruiser Brothers and Valley Hybrids for the parts and to Ken Francisco at gearinstalls.com for doing the setup on my locker and gear install. He even posted my project on his website. Harrop 488 Sierra Gear
