HOW TO: Fix your leaky windshield

I did this last summer. I was tired of having water dripping on my foot at random times during rainstorms. We spent a week camping in Baja this last January and it rained.the.whole.time. Dry floors, dry feet. Except for the night I left the sunroof cracked open. Oof.

I used the good urethane sealer you get at autobody/paint shops.

I'm all over this. Thanks for the link!

That's some sweet bondo work. Accident or just a lousy rust repair job?
I assume the latter. No accident since I've owned it. But at $70 for labor, paint, and materials, I'll just keep fixing it every few years.

Installed my Prinsu rack, looks awesome. Also saved an hour off my drive time by driving through a sand/dirt area to avoid a police road block due to an accident. Let's just say I was the only vehicle taking that route. God bless the 80!

I took the car to a local shop to have the control arm bolts loosened up. This guy is about 6'6" maybe 250 lbs. Up on the lift he put all his body weight on a 2 ft breaker bar and struggled to get them nuts loose.
They were on crazy tight.

Size matters

fixed the P401 code it threw last weekend. Now I'm having a tasty adult beverage.

:)

Lubed my shaft, tightened the nuts. Cleaned knuckles and applied maxi-moly. It's Florida and freaking hot.

Changed spark plug wires, tightened header bolts and installed a new drivers side OS grab handle

I did this right when I bought my rig because of a leaky windshield. Has been holding up great for months now.

Also fixing the stuff I broke last weekend.

Put my Prinsu on today too! But only off pavement I saw was my gravel driveway.

Did some more work on the LX four and a half again today.

I had to purchase a new blue hub clutch because I couldn't get my s***ty eaton one to separate. Hell, I even had to drill a screw out that got stuck in there. :( Only $70 on amazon though. Going through and draining the OE fluid. I have a bottle of 10k and a bottle of 20k, should I do 10? mix and get 15? or go straight 20k cst on this clutch?

Also completed the PHH work around and re-routed the rear heater hoses with 1/2" gates hose. Also decided to just replace all the heater hoses while I had it apart since they were all hard.

Also cleaned out my throttle body for the egr ports, I'm hoping that clears my CEL as one of them was completely clogged.

Next is to get the new heater valve from Napa (on order). The original was in terrible shape. Also replaced the thermostat with a new OE one. Radiator looked like it was in great condition. Flushed all heater cores, block and radiator, everything looked clean. :)

Next job is the front axle service and replacing oil, diff fluids and transfer case fluids. I figure that will be another weekend. :\

As I mentioned earlier, got mu nuts fixed.
Then I thought I should tackle another job since I got all mu brake kit parts in (both front and rear discs and pads and a little later in the afternoon I received the extended brake lines from @beno ).
It took me a while to figure out the right way to jack up the front axle and get the jack stands in supporting the axle. All set, no return at that point.
Got the wheels out. Proceeded on with loosening all the bolts on the PS and tried to get the caliper out too. Grabbed my 17mm socket and got a good laugh. The bolt is 14mm. Hmmm, whatever. 14mm socket will do. Bolts came out easily, even had some nice grease on them. I like that kind of attention to details I said.

Took the pads out and checked the discs too for wear. My brakes were fine. No need to replace them. Wow, I really dodge a bullet this weekend.
Lets put everything back together and grab a beer.
I triple checked the torque specs on every nut and bolt in the FSM.
I re-watched Texasknowhow's video on the front brake job and the part in which he said in the past he never used a torque wrench and just over tighten everything since it's better not to fall off. I smiled. I got this. Got everything I need. sockets, wrenches, torque wrench, gloves, GoJo, cool beer in the fridge. I got this I said.

I set my torque wrench to 90 lb-ft and proceeded to tighten the caliper.
This is way too easy I said at one point. The wrench kept on turning, no click. Keep turning then. No real resistance either.
All os the sudden I heard a snap. Oh... snap!
The bolt snapped.
I can't extract that broken bolt out now. Called around not too many places open on Saturday afternoon.

Can't drive since I can't properly bleed the brakes. The rear DS bleeder is getting rounded, and I can't turn it. Damn. I'll take it to Pep Boys and use the e-brake. Yeah... >5000 lb car in traffic. Good idea. I got the ARB bumper up front. What's the worse that can happen? A Camry?

Anyway, I manage to bleed the rest of them, not fully satisfied with the pedal feel, but oh well, it'll do.

Took it there and got a phone call 1 hour later. I need a new caliper. SOB!
The SA tells me I used the wrong bolt. WTF? I used the bolt that came out of it, not the wrong one.
Then I remembered... 14mm.
Now they have to bleed it too, let the deal with it.
Oh yeah, and while you're there, here replace these brake line hoses too. I don't want to re-bleed the system at this point.

Tomorrow after I get it back, I'll do the fuel filter mod for the rear axle differential breather.
Not a whole lot that can go wrong there. Or... who knows? The e-brake handle needs to be adjusted too. Maybe I'll screw something else up tomorrow.

Went elk hunting with Ol' Buddy and new Kodiak tent. The tent held steady and dry through five days of wind, rain, and snow. The truck saved my bacon on the narsty downhill backside as the snow melted and streams filled the trails. And the hunt ended with success.

Attempted to do the Firetruck Mod to repair my leaky windshield on my 92. Couldn't even get it to peel up to allow the caulk tip underneath. Thought that was weird so I compared it to my 93 (which also leaks) and it has a different gasket. Never noticed it before. It seems like it will be easier to do. The 92 is the original gasket and original windshield (I've owned it since new). I have no idea of the history of the 93 windshield and gasket but it doesn't appear to be new as it's missing the Toyota etching on the glass. So, at this point, I think I take the 92 to the glass shop and have them pull the windshield, have the FSM instructions handy for them, and hope they do it right.

I may do the 93 in the mooring tomorrow. I am finally going to have the whole day to work on it so I can get the carpet out and new vinyl flooring in. Really want to have the windshield sealed up properly before doing that...

UGH!

Any suggestions @surfpig or @NLXTACY?
