Drove up to Bear Valley with a few friends last weekend and went for an evening drive in the hills this weekend.

EDIT: Oh and whoever that was in the silver 60 that I passed on HWY 4 Sat. Dec. 20th.... nice truck!! :D

This is the time of year, where my work and income scales off. I am a telephone/data/IT subcontractor and company budgets dry up. So, did not want to replace both batteries costing me total of 240.00 plus tax. Went to wrecking yard to find a pair of used batteries. But out of curiosity, had the clerk check both batteries with a load tester. One battery was bad...the other did not drop below 12 volts. I said WOW, wont have to buy two batteries. So found a used one that was good. I thought that having one battery that is 1,000 cca and the other 600 cca would cause issues. But so far no.The used battery cost me $35.00 vs $140.00 for a new one.

as a welcome change I just drove it the whole weekend

Drove it from near San Francisco to Denver to spend the holidays with family!

Got my new heavy/heavy+ deluxe kit from Kurt @ Cruiser Outfitters. . .woo hoo!

Feels more like what didn't I do this past week? Let's see:

  1. Replaced horn contacts behind steering wheel, cleaned all combo switch contacts as well while I was in there.
  2. Replaced valve cover gasket and grommets as well as nut that had been cross-threaded.
  3. Greased window tracks and regulators. Siliconed the window rubbers and everything's working like a new car now except the back windows. They still want to stick to the rubbers about half way down.
  4. Adjusted tailgate and hatch to shut with a more uniform gap. Previous owner has the warped tailgate, so if I keep this 60, it needs to be replaced to function flawlessly.
  5. Started replacing the plastic vapor barrier that goes behind the door panels. Got the right front one done, but the razor blade dulled quickly and started tearing the plastic, so I just did it half way and put that project on the back burner until I have a box of fresh blades and several hours to kill. This one is more time consuming than you would think if you want to make it look factory.
  6. Removed the front seats and carpet, pulled the trans top cover to check it out. Has been shifting a little rough and wanted to do a visual check. No overt damage, so I replaced everything, drained what little grease was in the transmission and t-case and replaced it. Transmission shifts a little bit better now, but is still a tad notchy. If I feel like killing some time later, I may put the old one out of my '87 in it that I know shifts smoothly as well as rebuild the t-case while it's apart.
  7. Replaced the oil galley plug. This was a PITA. It had previously popped out on the guy I bought it off of and he did a temporary fix with JB Weld. It was on my list of things to do this week while on vacation, but it decided last week that it wouldn't wait when the putty broke loose right as I got to my garage. It took three trips to Fastenal to get the right parts. I wanted to stay metric and avoid using a drill, but it would have taken special ordering the tap and bolts to do it as well as M7x1.00 being a very uncommon thread size. I think I ended up going with 5/8"-18 and an F drill bit. Ended up having to borrow a right angle drill bit from my boss this morning, but I finally got it fixed.
  8. Changed the oil and filter.
  9. Replaced the oil pressure sending unit.
The one thing I hate about buying used Land Cruisers is there's usually a lot of deferred maintenance to catch up on. It's nice not having to worry about it breaking down on you, though.

Other things I've done this past month:
  1. Replaced thermostat. Old one came out in four or five pieces.
  2. greased all the door latches, handles, and hinges. Smooth as silk now. I also freed up the frozen lock on the hatch.
  3. Replaced the choke cable.
  4. Adjusted the valves. I did mine cold.
  5. Fixed where a PO had bent the actuator cable for recirculate.

I just thought I would post up here that it has been below freezing for over a week and my acura would not start (3 month old interstate battery!), and my LX450 would barely start and then finally gave up the ghost. Both cars are used on an almost daily basis.

Clobbersaurus, however, has been sitting for about 3 weeks and fired right up!

1. Wired up the 12v Aussie inclinometer.
2. Installed led bulbs on side markers, and front corner white driving lights.
3. Replaced missing lock button on rear door.
4. Installed repainted front grill and headlamp doors after buying new grill clips. Good improvement.... the old ones had broken pressure clips. Tight fitting now.

Topped off the transmission oil. I have the tiniest seep where the transmission mates to the bellhousing. On the to do list to get it fixed.

Last week I replaced the VSV as described in the FAQ section. awesome. 4HI button worked again like it was supposed to. Fast forward to this weekend, I had Dorothy out deer hunting, found some soft spots, threw it in park, locked the hubs, pushed the button and voila... Nothing. No 4HI. Ended up not needing it, but still need to figure out why it's not working again. Go Cowboys!!

Dripped a little WD-40 down the Ign lock button to free up the mechanism. Did the same to the hazard switch, tilt mech., and the little ball in the end of the turn signal stalk. See how it works in the morning.

Then noticed the dome light not working, hmmm. The fuse was blown, replaced. Worked. Turn key on and then off to kick the carb. cooling fan on, SNAP. The fuse blew again, hmmm. Guess it is time to pull the carb. fan and clean it up and see if that helps.
