Another vote for SOR. I reupholstered a '65 FJ45, an '80 FJ40, and my '78 FJ40, and all SOR covers were well tailored and fit nicely.

custom or using store bought covers?

My path will likely be purchasing premade stuff from either SOR or Cruiser Corps or whomever else makes them. That takes care of the sewing part of it. But there’s foam type and thickness to consider, and reassembly.

More than that, though, I wanted this thread to be a resource for anyone doing reupholstery, whatever way they want to go.

So thanks, all, for your thoughts and experiences.

Here is a link to Cruiser Corps' seat covers:

Seats - Interior

These appear to be very nice covers.

I one were to go this route, you need to buy foam. Easy enough; but you need to know what thickness to get.

For the front seats, does anyone know what thickness of foam cushions I need?

For the rear seats, does anyone know what thickness of foam cushions I need?

thumbs up to cruiser corps.
i used both their bucket and jump seat covers.
can post a few pictures later of the process, at least for the rear seats.

To summarize the “availability of materials” discussion, if you are reupholstering an FJ40, you have two sources for premade covers:

SOR, &
Cruiser Corps

Does anyone know of any others?

I love this color!

Here is a late 60’s or early 70’s seat. Front, passenger. As you can see, it is in need of a new cover. Question; do I remove all the squiggly metal springs, and replace with foam?

The above three pics are close up views of the same seat.

The seat has thin foam (maybe 3/4”) on that jute stuff atop the springy things.

I'm planning to reupholster the stock seats in my 8/69 build FJ40.

For the front seats, does anyone know what thickness of foam I need?

For the rear seats, does anyone know what thickness of foam I need?

I pulled the trigger on SOR front and rear kits in the coral color.

I'll be working on this after the first of the year.

Above posts show the seats that are now in my FJ40 “Hard Ways”.

A hack, amateurish reupholster job, but serviceable nonetheless.

I think the metal backs have been rattle canned.

I have a full extra set of seats. They’re in crummy condition but appear to be original.

I like that the metal on these is all original and has not been painted.

My plan is to reupholster these seats and then swap them in.
