I use (Zep Heavy-Duty Floor Stripper Ammonia Free Concentrate) For all my heavy duty cleaning around here (wife now uses it to clean stove top) it is readily available at all the big box stores and cheap to buy.
I've had parts washers big and small and they suck to keep clean or clean out when they get completely funky so I now have the full strength floor stripper in a spray bottle or I'll use a bus-bin if I'm going to soak parts.. I also dilute it 50/50 and use it in a spray bottle for a 409 type cleaning.

You run it full strength in the parts cleaner?

Well, they fought us every bit of the way but we got both axles out. The boys persevered. Some times the boys were trying for righty-loosely, sometimes they were looking for a 19mm socket for the 1/4” ratchet but were learning! They’ve all grown found of the PB Blaster, breaker bar and dead blow hammer. We had to beat on a few bolts, torch a few and only a few broke, most bolts gave up under 16 year old rage/persuasion!

Got the axles up on to the workbenches. Now we’ll teach as we tear down. Hopefully get them totally stripped, cleaned and ready for paint by semesters end.

We’re adding a parts washer to the shop, any recommendations for a safe parts washer solution was thinking of Oil Eater as it is the best stuff I’ve used around the shop. I dont want something volatile like kerosene or anything flammable. Thoughts?

Anyhow, we’ve pulled and bagged a ton of stuff, time to see what we need to order up.

Gonna pull these things apart and clean things up. We’ll rebuild the axles, see what the brakes need and see about re-arching the springs. Gotta get a Christmas list of parts together for Kurt.

Are those table legs up to the task of supporting the weight of axle housings and springs?

I would hate for one of those axles to take a trip the floor w/ someone in the way.

Good, Yes, Also Yes, I believe you are correct!

You can get tricky and try to add more lift on a budget a road well traveled and then you'll have an opportunity teach the kids how to do it right the second time because it drives like a box of weenies...

@Pighead gave you great advice if you want to stay SUA.. If you want more lift on a budget then just go SOA... Clapped out stock springs -.750"ish + 3" housing is still something around a 2.5" give or take lift and you don't have to think about Math's°...
Does SOA usually involve cut n turn to provide adequate caster angle? Either before the maiden voyage, or after b/c steers like a shopping cart.

Yes, they’re fine. Those tables, cockroaches and Glocks will be around after the apocalypse. The table gets lighter each day we pull parts off it ;) seriously though. We take safety very seriously in the shop, both PPE and the equipment.

Safety first. We’re building benches but Rome and our Shop weren’t built in a day.

Is that the next shop project?

Or the new color scheme for the Pig?
Haha, nope. The 40 will likely get some love next with maintenance and some body work.

Considering the needle scaler, would be really nice. Not sure if our air compressor could run it. Gotta do a little homework.

Makes a ton of sense for what the tool does.seems like it’d be awesome on the underside of the
🐖

Needle scalers with the finer needles is better for thin metal. The thicker needles can inflict damage easier than the thinner ones. On thicker metal, just hammer away. The thinner stuff should be approached with a little "finesse". Great project.

Umm, are you guys against Aircraft paint stripper???? It's quick work 🤔🧐😏😉😘
I tried it on my springs. Would have to check which brand but it was something like $90/gal. It didn't remove everything and I still had a lot of stripping to do after cleaning up after using the stripper. It doesn't remove rust for example. I decided to just use the stripping pads on my side grinder afterwards.

Stuff I get works great. Apply it and walk away for a while, come back and scrape it off 😉
I agree and love it. It’s a mess to clean up and pretty expensive for what it is, but I’ve seen it work awesome. We got a can to pull the paint off the axles and diff cover.

Boys are flying, we could have empty axle housings by the end of the day.

I was surprised to see safety wire through the backing plate bolts. Pretty rad. I usually think of airplanes and race cars when I see these.

Had a good week in the shop. The boys are getting dirty and learning as they go. We’re close to pulling both pumpkins. The rear won’t budge… might have to get aggressive. Dead blow hammer, PB blaster, pry bar… no movement. Starting to think it’s welded in place.

Front axle is nearly stripped. Gotta’ pull the pumpkin and we’re on to pulling/checking wheel bearings then clean and paint… and assembly.

Front axle is nearly there.

Rear axle may need a bigger hammer and some prayerful intervention. Birdied and axles look to be in good shape.

Any tricks on checking bearings? I’m a while you’re in there kind of guy and will likely just call Kurt and be done with it.

A few quick questions…

I assume these are not all original screws for mirrors? The lower two are but the ones along the triangle window will need to get welded closed.

My overflow tank is held on with some hardware store strap, can anyone tell if the bottle is correct? I have seen them mounted between the battery tray and headlight with more of a wire rod style mount.

My overflow bottle looks just like that, except the lid is wonky
