Build This years homework

Got a little time to paint up the wheels with some filler primer, scuff, paint. Gonna let them off gas and wet sand then a few coats of clear.

The front of the wheels are the pretty side. I went ahead and scuffed them with a maroon 3M pad and “wet sanded them.”

This is where we were at after a scuff and buff. This was how they looked, no major dings or gouges but enough pits and scuffs to try to fill a few imperfections.

I like filler primer as it goes on easy enough but has some voodoo in it that creates a high build surface which in turn fills some smaller imperfections. Will they be perfect? No, but in honor of Buckey… we are shooting for “better-ness”

After a quick knockdown with a 3M grey scotchbright, it was time to add the color, Smoke Grey as suggested in Nolan’s steel wheel tech thread. Color looks spot on to my eyes. I laid down two coats of color.

Came out nice if I say so myself.

Once I let these guys gas off for a few days I’ll likely wet sand any spots that need it and then a nice layer of gloss enamel to finish them off.

Slapped on some smoke grey… backside only. Once dry I’ll flip them and start on the pretty side.

Got a little time in the shop today. Getting organized for the fall kickoff. I hope we’ll start putting Humpty Dumpty back together again. Suspension and steering are up first. Just gotta’ button up both axles.

Got the rear axle back together. New brakes all around. Wheel cylinders looking good too.

Had a senior moment and mounted the wheel cylinders on the wrong side of the backing plate. Sheesh.

Axles shafts back in with new bearings, races and seals.

Starts first week of September. I chip away at it when I have some time and to get us through a few things that need more time than I want to spend in a class .like I painted the wheels, installed the races. Today I made 3 mobile heavy duty work benches.

8 new boys this year. 4 returners. I gotta go over all the basics again, I’m going to have my returners see if they can get the free Pig running and driving. Then when the new guys are up to speed we’ll install the axles and suspension and get back to business on the FJ55 project homework.

Boys are back. The donated pig is a great place to start with the basics for the boys. They rolled it over to the shop so we can go over all the parts and systems. They’re learning the basics, like what’s a ratchet and what’s a wrench, righty righty and lefty loosey. What a carb does and why none of them own a car with a carb anymore. Haha

A few more weeks of tools, safety and learning and we should be moving again. We take a field trip to the tire shop tomorrow to get project Homework’s “new” shoes mounted onto the factory steelies.

Took the boys on a field trip to a local tires shop today and it was fantastic. John and his crew at Purcell tire knocked it out of the park.

Good teaching and answered a ton of questions.

Got our old General Grabbers 33x10.5” tires mounted to our purdy OEM wheels.

And for @PabloCruise we did finally build some sturdy proper benches for the boys. We made three 4x8’ workbenches on casters with vices for each workstation. It was overdue and already paying dividends.
