Sweet T-shirt Bro!

Sweet T-shirt Bro!

What can I say, my work tees are generally left overs of my punk/pop rock and skateboarding days of yesteryear. Still listen to the same junk, just don't go to every concert lol.

Fired up the old girl today, battery held out and after a half minute of cranking she was running and I was cruising around the block.

This last week I had a "care" package show up from a very generous Cruiserhead that helped me out with some much needed odds and ends and really got me motivate to get back on the 45 project. Thanks landcrusher909 (Rob)

I do need some help with a passenger bottom seat frame repair:
45 PU Lower Seat Frame Picture needed

I made some good progress on the passenger seat frame today. I had 3 broken bolts in the tub, I was able to use some penetrating oil and heat to get them out cleanly. Obviously not something you would want to do on a paint finished tub but in this case it beats drilling and tapping. After I removed the offending bolt, I ran a tap through the holes to make sure they were nice and clean.

With the broken bolts out I could start on the seat frame. As you can see both rear mounts were broken, leaving the tank simply resting on the gas tank with just a single bolt up front. Good enough for 7-11 runs :D

No worries, a local Wasatch Cruiser club member had a lone bench seat kicking around and the frame was in decent shape and would make a good core for parts. I cut out the tube I needed. As the FJ40 has quite different dimension I wasn't able to simply cut and weld rather I had to cut out the captured nuts and the seat back stop.

From there I used a tube sleeve material to extend as far in either side of the break as I could, ideally preventing a failure ever again. I used the captured nut hole and added a hole in the main seat frame to allow me to do some nice rosette welds. It's simply tack welded at this point but it turned out really nice. I'll fab up the outer seat leg, tack it into place and pull the seat back out to finish weld.

The 45 outside mount was a little tougher because the foot doesn't kick out the side like the inside mount which was easily salvaged from my 40 Series donor seat frame. The 45 outside mount kicks straight back. No biggie, just a little more fab.

Made a template to get me close to the needed shape

All fixed, welded and primed. Just like the left side, the right is sleeved on the ID with some thick-wall tube (actually drag-link material, perfect fit) so it won't have a tenancy to break again right where the seat back smacks against the tube. I need to bolt the seat back back on and get it installed but I'm happy to be making some progress with so many other irons in the fire right now :D

Everytime I see it I think of how cool it would be to have a landCruiser shop and have it as the shop truck.

It's been a fun truck. I don't drive it as much as I should be everytime I do it brings a smile to my face.

We actually picked up a 1965 Toyota Stout to be our "shop truck" but when 3-4 of us are heading to lunch at the same time... its not the truck we choose and it's been moved down to storage as of late. I need to go dig it out and put a for sale sign in that :D

Well let me know when you are going to sell it and maybe I'll have to buy it from you. Haha

Where does a guy find it for sale?

I've simply shared it with some locals but if you're interested hit me with an email and I'd be happy to shoot you some pics!

The Stout is official for sale!

Update to prevent getting any hopes in the wrong places :D

Stout sold last year to a local.

And the 45 is covered in snow :(

Time to get this Cruiser moving again :D

Life has been busy and I just haven't made the 45 any kind of priority. It sat longer and longer between each use and finally it has a dead battery, flat tire and didnt move for 6-9 months. Enter COVID 19 and every evening and weekend social engagement or 4x4 event I had on the calendar vanished. I had what I've heard others call "spare time". I have been getting so much done in this spare time and most of it related to maintenance catchup on Cruisers.

I put a fresh battery in and it fired right to life. Zero fluid in the brake or clutch cylinders. I think I've got a bum wheel cylinder (have never touched them), not sure where the clutch fluid went. I pulled both cylinders and will rebuild them. It needs new tires, an oil change, a coolant overflow bottle and an exhaust system.

Hoping to be driving this week.

I’ve got some factory coolant bottles, along with the heater shutoff valve Kurt. Maybe an offset on those knuckle kits?

I’d absolutely be interested in something like that. Let me do a re-inventory of where I’m at with parts and we’ll catch up.

I replaced the brake master with one of our aftermarket units and rebuilt the old brake master as the clutch master (ditch residual valve and swap end cap) using a Japanese rebuild kit. This leaves me with a handful of tin cup masters to clean up and rebuild for my 65-40 or use on this next to around. I have a handful of NOS Toyota full master rebuild kits that may end up in these, or I'll just swap the tin cups to a new OEW cylinder if I ever restore it?

I tossed on a cheap generic overflow bottle that's been sitting on the bench seat for a few years and took it for a rip. Gave it a quick rinse and a fresh tank of fuel. It ran pretty good. It has a hellacious exhaust leak at the manifold to head gasket so I'll need to address that asap. After that happens my exhaust guy is cued up to so a full replacement exhaust using this as guide:

So the exhaust manifold has been leaking for quite some time. I pulled the intake and exhaust and found the gaskets in multiple pieces (no surprise) but also one out of the three intake port collar/sleeves was all tweaked. I pulled the intake/exhaust manifold off the original F from this truck and it was missing one and the other two were even worse than mine. So I need to track on down.

Hoping @65swb45 or @landcrusher909 might have a center manifold spare kicking around? The one I need is the smaller OD for the center set of cylinders (#3/#4)
