I too was able to get away a bit today and, thanks to Fast Eddy, got a fugly blue wiper motor installed and working.

I did not look at it hard enough, however and discovered the splines on the passenger side wiper stud are pretty gone so I guess I will take it apart and use a doner to replace that stud and gear. In the mean time, I was able to fix another of the three wiper motors I had so I now have two good ones and one doner. So another part scavenged for the Professor Plum project for :princess:

I continued to work on the brake lights and emergency blinkers. I broke the inline fuse that was in the dash due to so much removal and installation so I jumpered it. WRONG ANSWER. I figured I would blow a fuse in the fuse block but instead I torched the wire going to the right rear turn signal. That was a hint for me that that is probably where the short may live.

At one point I even had the brake lights working and then the fuse started to blow once again. I disconnected the rear loom at the firewall; blew the brake light fuse, disconnected the lighter, drop light plug and master cylinder switches - still blew the fuse. Has to be a short to ground under the dash or in the turn signal switch itself. To get to the rest of the under dash wiring I will have to pull the fresh air vent stuff back out:mad:

I started getting frustrated so I changed direction and stained some magazine holders I made for the johns in my house:

Then I did a little welding for my neighbor and made a plate to repair a bit of the frame on the Plum.

Realized it was late and I had missed dinner so I came upstairs to a sleeping wife. Oops. Tomorrow is a Hash day so we will be running a trail someplace down in Atlanta so no wrenching. Unless I can get this electrical problem worked out, the Jan 1 run will probably be missed.:frown: (and I had even talked :princess: into braving the topless 40 with me on I-75)

Throw it on a trailer, you don't need lights on the trail or just show up we'll find you a seat.

well, glad you at least got a good wiper motor.

how many friggen magazine racks do you need? or how many johns are in your house?

One for each crapper and 3 more for some clutter around the house. I have some reading to ketchup on!

I know Sean isn't going to make it but I may end up having to ride in his Bronco on MLK Day! (If he gets the 60 back going to tow that mofo!)

:bounce:W00T!!! LIGHTS ARE FIXED!:bounce:

So after spending a ton of time trying to diagnose this, I had unwrapped all the wires under the dash and disconnected all the rear looms. Still nothing. Finally I did what I was afraid to do (for fear of breaking it) which was remove the turn signal switch. I disassembled it and one of the screws that mounts the actual switch in the housing fell out on the floor.

Upon closer examination,. I discovered the screw had been arcing the wires together as well as to ground! A simple problem but not one I believe I actually was able to discover!

So I fixed that and started to wrap all the wiring via various methods: some spiral wrap, spilt wrap and just good old tie wraps.

I ran out of steam, however and did not get it finished. :princess: and I are going to Mobile for a couple days so no wrenching but I would say today was succesful!

The picture shows 7 magazine racks/holders lined up after staining. So do you really have 7 bathrooms? That would be a large number of toilets for a house, but maybe not for a mansion. How much more is there to this story?

I just have a lot of reading to catch up on:lol:

I put one in each bathroom, a couple in my crapper, left one in the shop for Trails and put one in the TV room. End of story:popcorn:

OK - back from Mobile and got the dash all buttoned up today. Used about 500 wire ties. Then I tried to start it and got no headlights and no spark. WTF. Messed with the alternator and coil wires, tried again and both worked. Freaking gremlins!

Anywho, I got the backup light working and discovered the either there is very little gas in the thing or the gas guage or sender does not work. That is for another time.

Tommorow I plan to finish the wiring under the truck, get the emergency brake adjusted and get at least the driver's seat in so I can take the bastard around the neighborhood.

Then the next thing will be trying to lean out the weber a bit before I decide to go with Bob's suggestion of an electric fuel pump to reduce the fuel flow to the bastard. I have a few Aisin carbs. I should send one to JimC for a rebuild.

I will think of you guys having fun on the New Years run.

You started out discussing your problems chasing electrical gremlins and followed it up by noting that you will be adding an additional electrical item to the truck which the gremlins could potentially enjoy devouring. Are you sure this is the path you want to pursue?

Later production Cruisers had a return line for excess fuel to feed back to the fuel tank. Would a plumbing revision be viable to provide bypass of excess fuel with the reliability of a mechanical fuel pump and no additional electrical gremlins possible?

Stop chasing that POS Weber and go Aisin. The cost and hassle of an electric fuel pump would be better spent sourcing the correct factory fuel lines and throttle linkage for the Aisin. Jim C might have them. He sold me some of the lines for my '73, which does have a fuel return line btw. I got the other parts from SOR and from cruiserparts.net (who I can not recommend - the "rust free" linkage parts they sold me were solid masses of rust and useless. They laughed at me on the phone when I complained. I give them

That is a good suggestion. I will look into that. I certainly do not want to add anything electrical until I am sure all the bugs are out.

I think that there is a not so surprising trend here! (I would prefer the Aisin as well - just going with what is operable now) I have the carb and pretty sure I have linkages in my junk pile.

Agreed there, Sean. I have had a couple experiences with them as well. I do not think I would use them again unless I absolutely could not find something I needed right away and then I would expect to have to blast it, repair it, modify it and paint it no matter what.

I Really Drove It!!!!!!

With the thought in mind that some of you bastards were on the New Years Run, I was intent on one myself. I got all the electrical buttoned up and threw in the driver's seat and started the Mule up and manhandled her out of the shop. The clutch needs adjusting again (I think the cylinder might be going bad) but I was able to take it up and down the street a few times in the cold! It did some sputtering and died a couple times partly due to my clutch and a need for some carb and timing adjustment but once it was back in the garage it had blown all the old carbon out of the exhaust and there was no more condensation dripping once it got heated up. The speedo worked but the 4wd indicator light which was stuck on is now off and would not relight:rolleyes:, I also have a mechanical problem in the collar with the left turn signal. I just need to put a roll pin in the lever or something to fix that.

I reluctantly brought her back in the hangar and looked underneath and in the engine compartment and to my amazement, NO LEAKS!!!

It was a good way to start the year.

Congrats!!! Your road trip today will probably be a great memory and personal accomplishment that will be fresh in your memory for a long time. Did your bride get a chance to video you & the 40, or even get chance to take a spin down the street?

She would not even come out of the house until I parked it!!!:lol:

:princess: refused a ride again today but did help with the clutch. I re-bled it and got some bubbles out and then adjusted the freeplay as well as the lower "custom" piston rod. I am certain there has to be a leak but I am not loosing any fluid. I am perplexed.

I also adjusted the emergency brake and then went for another quick ride. Itis freaking cold out today!!! I got insurance on the beast so I plan to get to DMV and try to get it registered so I can take it to the gas station all legal like!

I worked on the split case after that.
