Anybody have any thoughts on the most discreet way to dispatch a raccoon within city limits should the need arise? Saw one wobbling down the street last week - looked ill. I missed my chance to run it over and it disappeared in the woods. I doubt my neighbor would've enjoyed a large caliber blast in his front yard (I lent my .22LR to a buddy just a few days earlier, d'oh!) I think even the .22LR might have been too much for my 'hood at that hour, though. Perhaps a .177 pellet @ 1500fps? A friend who knows about silently dispatching large air-breathers told me that CCI makes LR sized "CP caps" that are like the old county fair shooting rounds. Anybody? And I'm not planning on getting a bow or crossbow.

Meagan, my 19 year old step daughter is down from NY visitimg for a while. I took her out back yesterday and let her shoot the 22 pistol, Glock 21 (45 cal) pistol and 12 gauge shotgun yesterday after some safety training. She had never shott a weapon before.

She thought all were cool but that the Glock and shotgun were too big. She does wish to shoot the 22 again. Can't wait to hear what her father has to say. :)

a sledge-o-matic?

Buddy of mine built a .22 silencer from plans he found online and some real simple h/w store parts.

I would think the city would dispatch Animal Control to trap it. I lived a couple islands up from Key West for ten years, on the gulf. Basically in a jungle made up of larger trees and Mangroves as well as a variety of under growth and smaller bushes.

Racoons were all over the place along with other critters. I trapped and transported better than two dozen racoons to the other siide of the island to a large county property. My next door neighbor spotted them in the trees and shot at them with a paint ball gun, all at night. One morning headed for town a racoon crosses the road in front of me, bright orange spot on his ass. Made my day.

Down on Topsail, we had an injured raccoon and I called animal control. A cop showed up, asked me if I had a .22 and told me that they couldn't shoot it with their service weapons. I asked if I would get in trouble and he said "hit it the first time and it shouldn't be a problem."

When racoons try to get on our back porch, Momma just chase 'em off with a broom.

They tear up our bird feeders every night. Trapped one last year but was PITA getting out of cage. Sucker tried to give me rabies. CHOOTEM!!

Erymer- you promised pics of your new lady. You haven't posted any?? Man what is wrong with you. As you would say "she's sexy".

Kitchen update- almost completed, the kids and I moved back home, E is back on 8-5 shift, and he is about to go nuts every night with the kids.. LOL "Honey we're home...."

Thats awsome. That is swinging for the wife of the year award pretty hard.

Well boys I think she just knocked it out of the park. So you guys know about the A-Bolt she got for me.

I've been wanting to get into bow hunting for some time and Stacy has always enjoyed archery. So two weeks ago we stop my BMC archery and make a purchase. We got her a new Hoyt Ruckus in pink no less. and I picked up an 07 Bowtech Guardian. She is mostly into the target aspect but we'll probably start doing some 3D shoots. I'll do the same but I really wanted to be able to get in the woods for deer season 4-6 weeks before all the rifle hunters scare the crap out of all the deer.

So, last night we were at Dicks and looking at some hard bow cases. Stumbles across this little gem at a price I could not beat. I was stunned. Let's just say that E is a very happy guy today. Now I just have to get this big bugger home and mounted in the basement.

Ok, the wife has given me the go-ahead to buy another gun for Christmas. Thing is, I can't decide what I wanna get, so I thought I'd get some opinions from other like-minded folks. Here are the possibilities:

1. Marlin 336 lever-action rifle.

I have a shotgun, a semi-auto full-size pistol, and a sub-compact concealed carry pistol, but no rifles. I like the idea of a lever-action, and the Marlin 336 seems to be one of the best.

Pro's - Powerful 30-30 cartridge is readily available. Cost isn't bad to purchase at $300-$400 for a good used rifle. I've heard that the newer ones aren't as well made, so I'd probably be looking used.

Con's - When would I shoot it? I'm not a hunter. The range that I'm a member at doesn't allow rifle calibers. I'd have to join another range, unless I want to drive up to my buddy's farm in VA to shoot it.

2. Springfield Range Officer .45acp 1911

This is one sweet looking gun, IMO. It's the perfect starter 1911, in that it's not too expensive, but it's a solid base to build off of, if you are so inclined.

Pro's - It's a 1911. It's a .45. If a .45 won't do the job, you're in trouble.

Con's - It's the most expensive of my options, at around $750 - $800. I could go with a Remington 1911 R1, which is about $100 cheaper, but isn't quite as nice, IMO. I'm not counting out the Remington though.

3. Some form of .22 pistol. Either a 1911-22, Walther P-22, Ruger SR-22, or a Buck Mark.

Cheapest option. Ammo is super-cheap. Great for target practice or plinking.

Pro's - Did I mention this is the most inexpensive option, and would mean that going to the range costs a lot less? Plus, I'd feel comfortable letting the wife shoot it, since it wouldn't scare her quite like any other option.

Con's - Pretty much a range-only option. Of the guns I would own, it certainly wouldn't be the one I'd choose for personal protection.

4. Not a true option, but I'll throw it out there. Some form of AR.

Pro's - Off the charts cool factor. Lots more capacity in case the SHTF.

Con's - Cost, plus it might scare the crap outta the wife. Plus, unless I go with a .22, I would probably have the same problem as with the Marlin......where would I shoot it? But I can't see myself going with an AR that's a .22. Nothing wrong with it, but if I'm buying a SHTF gun, I don't want a .22.

So there ya have it. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I'm going to the Dixie Gun & Knife show in a couple of weeks, and it'll be hard to keep from walking out of there without one of the above, but....which one?

I've also been bitten by the AR bug but probably just because I don't already have one. Never really wanted one (follow the leader anyone?), and I'm sure there are plenty of better options for me, but I find myself recently interested. A Springfield SOCOM in .308 is another likely choice for me but the money is much higher. I need to look into the non-.223 calibers in the AR, I guess. The short overall length is what appeals to me.

To answer your question - I'd go with a .22 pistol. Fun at the range, fun in the woods and cheap to shoot. Look at the Ruger 22/45 if you like the feel of a 1911. Aren't Buckmarks big money?

You can get a Buck Mark for around $400 - $500, so they are a little more than other .22's.

I would vote on the RO. I don't like the rear sight much but I am a huge fan of Springfield.
Wal-Mart is selling ARs now and I bet you can get one there on Holiday special for the price of that RO. So you might want to look into that. I have an AR that was my CQB rifle until I bought a Socom II.
That being said the next gun I buy will be a lever action 30-30 because nothing is cooler than racking that action like your walking on the set of a bad a$$ western
The Walther P-22 is fun to shoot and a cool little gun but at the end of the day I still felt like I shot nothing bigger than a pellet gun. It is great for working fundamentals and muscle memory though. So this definitely gets my second vote.
I'm sure none of that helped :-)

So, basically, you're saying you'd go with 1, 2, 3, or 4. Thanks. :p

If I'm reading you right, your order would be:

Range Officer
Walther P-22
AR or Lever-action 30-30

My order changes depending on what time of day it is. I really like the RO and know that I want something like it someday. Just depends on how money shakes out in the next couple weeks if I could swing it. The Walther is literally half the price.

Adam - I wouldn't say it's necessarily worthless, but you're definitely right that if I'm not going to use it for hunting, it's usefulness is definitely questionable. It is pretty effin' cool and could certainly reach out and touch someone if necessary though.

I think giving you a direct answer is difficult because all of your choices are solid choices and very different from each other, my personal 2 cents, go with the 1911, but I am partial to single action/ cocked and locked carry that come with a 1911. If you want something you can shoot every weekend with any level of shooter go with the .22, another good choice is the ruger mark iii, a very reliable and accurate gun to have.
