Love the Big window 56 F100. Rare truck. So what is the big secret all about :)
No big secret really, just storing it while the workers are on other projects.
I have a small interest in the building so I get a couple of indoor parking spaces and some shelf space for fj40 parts. I like having the dsrtrdr there to whisper to my 77 FJ40 project.
The hot rod mechanics don't quite know what to think of this Japanese 4x4. I'm the only one there that has any metric tools!

My brother in law is building / selling custom trucks, they have 5 going to the mecum auction in anaheim next week. 2 are '56 big window fords.

LED's Rock!
Seriously Claudia, you will find folks are willing to give a little more respect while changing lanes...

Nice build on the bumper:cheers:

I got to drive it around the block today :bounce:

a milestone, not only for the truck, but for me as well: first time driving a manual since my foot surgery 4 months ago :steer:

I really like how it handles - now to decide about new tires :flamingo:

now to decide about new tires

oh how I like tire discussions

when I got the truck, it had really old dryrotted BFG MTs 33" 12.5 15s, then I got hand-me-downs BFG A/T 33" 10.5 15s, which I didn't like - then bought BFG MT 33" 10.5 15s and have been running those ever since

so if any of you have recommendations for tires, I'd appreciate it - but please, only pipe in if you can compare what you like to any of these three, otherwise, I have no frame of reference to evaluate your comments

BTW, I am now going for 35"s to be mounted on 16 inch wheels from an 80 series

Hi all,

Claudia, consider the Cooper SST radial mud tires. I have a buddy that has put many miles of mud, snow, and desert on two sets of these tires without complaints.

Alan

anybody else have suggestions ?

help me spend money :hillbilly:

Hey Claudia, I've had the BFG AT's, Nitto Terra Grapplers, and now have the BFG KM2's on the 80 and Cooper SST's on my DD. You didn't specify on whether you were going with an MT or AT, but I will tell you that the SST's are by far the loudest tire I have ever owned right from the start.

I absolutely love the KM2's if you are looking for an MT that is superb in the rocks and quiet on the road. I would buy these again in a heartbeat! The Grapplers were great on the road, but I never had them in the rocks.

I have had good experiences with BFG ATs and Mts, but the MTs were pretty loud on the highway. I also had a good experience with Cooper ATs. I wanted a set of BFG KM2s for my LX450, but they were back ordered in 315/75/16 for a long time, so I ended up getting GY MTRs. I like those too. They work well off road in rocks, sand and mud and they are much more quiet than my old MTs. The MTRs air down to 10 psi with no problems throwing a bead (yet).

Claudia, I would probably recommend the BFG km2's. I have run the km2's (on the 100), A/T s, and the old km1 (aka M/T). I have had extremely good longevity from all the tires. The a/ts lasted 10 years on my Nissan pickup truck until the weather in Puerto Rico got to the side walls.
Since the m/ts are no longer available and were replaced by the km2's, I would highly recommend them for the type of driving that you do - ie mostly offroad. they certainly are louder than the originals or the all terrains but the aggressive tread with a decent ride and srtong sidewall makes them pretty nice in my opinion. I think the price point is pretty good on the km2's as well. You can often find them on sale. I plan on running 33x10.50x15 on the gazoo since I cannot get 9.5s anymore. of course here in the East with the amount of mud that we have to deal with the aggressive tread is a welcome thing.

i loved my bfg mts for the life span. i'm running duratracs now on my 80 and they seem to be holding out great too. i bought them because of the rep they had among 80 drivers and because they weren't $400 a tire like many are these days. i've been very impressed. i don't know how they do on 40s, but considering the price, they might be worth looking into.

I've had the BFG's with mixed results - all I can say those sidewalls are junk and never buy another . This last set I put on the '77 over the summer are the Toyo Open Country MT's in 33x10.50x15 . I will never use another tire , period . Amazing traction for an MT even in the rain being very hard on throttle and brakes - no issues at all . Have yet to try them on total ice but I expect from mud/sand/dirt use they will easily exel in snow ect this winter . Amazingly quiet and the easiest large diameter tire I've ever had to balance . Tire guy thought his machine was broken and kept checking them to make sure . He offered to re-do them after a test run since he thought something was off ....lol . Had 'em over 80mph and smooth as silk , not to mention they have an awesome wear life from what I hear from others , one guy has nearly 70k on his 1/2 ton Chevy on his . They are a bit pricey and I was really hesitant to sink that much coin in them but it was money well spent .

Second choice was the KM2's , just not sure if the sidewalls are as good as they claim .
