thanks everybody for chiming in on the tires - I am indeed more interested in MTs than ATs

in Arizona, tires are pretty much shot by the dry heat in 5 years - and since I use the 40 mainly for wheeling, my tires are pretty much done before they even wear 50%

availability is an issue for me, too, since Michael had to wait 7 weeks on his last Goodyear MTR Kevlar replacement tire

A few guys around here are running Goodyear Duratrac and liking them, more of an AT tire though. I'd say BFG KM2, Cooper SST, or Toyo Open Country MT. Can't go wrong with any of the three, find the best deal ;-)

... now to decide about new tires :flamingo:

I suggest round and black. Tread wear doesn't matter, they are going to age out long before they wear out.

If they don't have red letters, they aren't ! ;p

I suggest round ...

OK. So that rules out Swampers... :)

I wish I had any trail time on the Maxxis I bolted on the '80 here. They're round (as far as I can tell...), black, and - not unimportantly - cheap...

For something completely different you could source a set of Simex tires , there is an importer bringing them into the States now ....those jungle trekkers look great , btw .
I hate that , the rest of the planet gets all the cool stuff and we get the junk .
I know a few folks that have ran the Maxxis tires for awhile , good as long as they aren't on the highway too much and seemed to balance well if you use Equal .

Back to it!

Next up, a FJ60 axle.

The spring pads are in the wrong spot, wider apart, so hacked them off!

Grinding isn't one of my favorite things, so, prefer to get over with ASAP. The weapons: The 4 grit wheel knocks it off quickly, so, care is needed not to go too far. Start smoothing with the 24 grit wheel. More with a 36 grit resin fiber disk. Make it nice with a 60 grit on the DA sander. :hillbilly:

Will need new perches, these are from Ruff Stuff, have the beef. They are intended for spring over, so needed some mods.

First, are too tall, will cost lift, so some chopping.

Next, are too long, will cost spring flex, droop, so more chopping.

Reviewing the old axle, it's possible to detect signs that it's made rock contact. In the past, have slobbered weld metal on that ring to reduce rock contact with the drain plug. Decided to sister some additional metal from the start.

Important stuff missing?:whoops:

The perches on the old axle were easy to remove, fell off!

Did a bunch of unpictured stuff, wheel cylinders, one replaced, one resealed, new wheel bearings and seals, snached the diff from the old axle, assembled, tossed the '60 axle under the rig. It's not painted, the perches are not welded, etc, will get the 5spd/split case in, sort the drive shaft to determine pinion angle, then pull it weld it up and paint.

The numbers: The old axle was ~55" wms, the '60 axle ~57.5", the old wheels ~3.5" bs, the '80 series wheels ~4.5". So, when done, will be just slightly wider, perfect,,, hopefully!:hillbilly:

looks good - I am sure I'll find a way to mangle it nonetheless :whoops: :hillbilly: :o

 (at the other shop that did the original U-bolt flip/spring perch conversion some years ago) - best example of how not to weld

Some of the leftovers.

hey 40s guys, here's your chance at a proven bolt-on disk brake conversion kit with everything you need, includes brakes not pictured here . . .

I prefer to deal locally due to weight, and I have spare brake pads to go with the kit - will list in the Classifieds sometime around Christmas

Same as when we did the front... Can't accuse the shop that did them for being inconsistent... that's the third axle where their stuff just came off. I don't think we have any more, though.
