Important stuff missing?:whoops: The perches on the old axle were easy to remove, fell off! Did a bunch of unpictured stuff, wheel cylinders, one replaced, one resealed, new wheel bearings and seals, snached the diff from the old axle, assembled, tossed the '60 axle under the rig. It's not painted, the perches are not welded, etc, will get the 5spd/split case in, sort the drive shaft to determine pinion angle, then pull it weld it up and paint. The numbers: The old axle was ~55" wms, the '60 axle ~57.5", the old wheels ~3.5" bs, the '80 series wheels ~4.5". So, when done, will be just slightly wider, perfect,,, hopefully!:hillbilly:

Will 80 series wheels fit on 60 series axles without spacers?

They bolt right on, the "need" for spacers depends on tire fitment, spacing need. Raul in post 571 has a '60 axle with '80 wheels and 315 tires, no spacers, works great.

A junk yard let me take a 93 plus 80 series wheel home to test fit. It won't work on my FJ40 or my FJ62 front axles without a spacer. I would have bought them if they did. I had the same issue with the 91/92 80 series wheel. This one is currently being as a spare. If I need to replace a front tire I would had to use a back tire on the front and then use the space on the rear. If I can find longer wheel lugs I would use a spacer. Not going to use one of the thicker wheel spacers with their own lugs.

Could there possibly be a back spacing difference between Toyota and Lexus 80 series wheels. I see Raul has Lexus wheels.

hey 40s guys, here's your chance at a proven bolt-on disk brake conversion kit with everything you need, includes brakes not pictured here . . . I prefer to deal locally due to weight, and I have spare brake pads to go with the kit - will list in the Classifieds sometime around Christmas

I'll take them. My 77 has front but needs rear disc. As long as Inkpot and 'tools say it's ok. ...

Got to drive it home tonight (just in town and on the highway), and it is sweet!
Claudia is scheduled for a shakedown run tomorrow...

...and it fits in the garage! :bounce: :bounce2:

Michael says the wheel balance weights make a nasty sound when they come off on the highway  two more are gone :bang:

Imagine being the poor SOB that was behind him and had those weights land on the hood, or even worse, the windshield!?!?!?:censor::mad:

Good deal! I'm anxious to see how well it behaves. I really expect it will work great. John

Re wheel weights: very light traffic, luckily nobody close when they came off. The tire guys will be getting an earful later today.

The truck drives dead straight on the freeway, almost no steering input required; turning onto Saguaro from Shea Blvd, I almost overdid it when I pulled on the wheel as usual :)

following, for what short time I could before I got stopped at lights, I made these observations:

1) the LED tail lights are BRIGHT

2) the two little license lights are not in the middle between them - but since I am not following myself, that won't irk me :hillbilly:

I'll have a chat with my friends at ADOT:idea: about moving the top mounting holes a bit closer together.:hhmm: I wouldn't expect the newly designed plates to be available before the first of the year.:doh:We all know how expedient the Arizona state government is:bang:

just a picture from today:

... and another one...

We'll take the '40 on another run on Sunday - the LX will be called into service tomorrow for the dirt road run to Humbug mine; no need for a bikini-topped locked FJ40.

Wait....that's it??? WE need updates!! How'd it drive, what gets done next etc...we are living vicariously through your rebuild:hillbilly::bounce:

The way I heard it: Our law enforcement officers couldn't figure out how or couldn't be bothered to, recognize Arizona plates. So, our genius lawmakers passed a law that the "Arizona" must be fully visible, making most of the older plate frames illegal. The more correct version is likely something like; one of the law maker's brother in-law is in plate frame sales and offered a big kickback?:hillbilly:

As a new fellow mudder, NEW 40 owner, and recently retired law enforcement officer of 24 years... (Scottsdale PD) I assure you, this law you speak of with the license plate frames had nothing to do with the Officer's in the field not recognizing the AZ plates... It was strictly for the wonderful photo-radar (PR) program many cities have adopted here in our wonderful state... (I hated photo-radar by the way.) but, as the municipalities were trying to issue their PR tickets, there was a discrepancy of some states not being visible or identifiable for issuance of the PR ticket, then it became morphed into AZ name not being visible, and since no one actually stopped the vehicle to verify registration or driver info etc, it became an issue... So the new more restrictive law was born..... So please give the poor Officer's some credit... :)

Now, I am almost through this thread and love what I see here... Getting ideas for my cruiser... Reading, reading and more reading. Thanks for all the awesome information here... One of these days, I will make it out to a meeting and join the Adventures in my "new" 40... Thanks for the pics and info...

looking forward to meeting you

Well. We've been busy hitting trails over the holidays.

Didn't see this until now; anyways, some more pix over here:

That's now with power steering, front axle converted to FJ60 outers, rear FJ60 axle, 315s (Maxxis Bighorn MT) on 80-series wheels; new brake booster/master from a 4runner. Higher rockers w/ newly designed steps, newly designed rear sill, newly designed tire carrier on the rear bumper, and most importantly, LED license plate lights.

Drives, steers, and brakes really, really nice. Quite a difference. Kudos to Tools and inkpot at the Spa.

...and, it's got yet another broken spring pin... :grinpimp:
