You can get impedance matching transformers at Radio shack cheap.

Hmm...I guess I need to go shopping again.

My Front Speakers i just used the Magnet and Stuck them up into the dash area.. Drivers side was a bit crowded, especialy with the Clutch, but now i dont have to worry about that =)

for the rear. Computer speakers have worked ok for me till now.. i think some 6x9's may go in soon .. wallmart pioneers for like $60..

Sound isint a big deal in my cruiser, no matter how much you spend its still going in a tin box, so it wont sound too good. i just like it loud so i can here the XM over the Swampers..

I just had a thought. if you built a bit of a box to go inside the rear fender wells, you could mount marine speakers on the upward angled section right behind the seats. Might require the rear axle be back a bit, but even my spring-under 33's don't seem to come that close to the front of the well...

I bought some Audivox boxes and mounted them to the rollbar. Then I mounted some 3-1/2" Planet Audio's to the bottom lip of the dash so door removal didn't take 1/2 my sound.

It definately needs some bottom end, I could add a sub. I like that everything is out of the way and nothing has to be changed when I take the top and doors off.

wow... those are interesting.... if you want to pump sound to the people in front or behind you :)

anyway, lately I have been considering switching my boxes out (#12) and move to ammo cans. I have some cans... and they would be more weather proof. I just wonder how the sound will change if I use ammo cans and the speaker is inside a metal container?

mine are mounted in metal tuffy boxes and sound great, BUT the tuffy metal is much thicker than your standard metal can, I would guess the metal cans would rattle, you may be able to isolate the rattles by using plenty of foam tape and would reccomend dynomat material inside the boxes, as well as making sure nothing is rattling around inside too much, ie: metal on metal.

yeah, but where the hell do you mount those on a rig that would not just look totaly whack and not direct more sound out of rig than in?

ok i will post this up again, i used Bose 161's and mounted them under the rear seat in a cage i built along with a couple of amps and crossover and then mounted a mono sub under the drivers seat. got the 8in. sub box at the local shucks auto supply (checker etc) and put a soundstream sub in it. the sub has 120 watts to it and the bose 161's have 75 watts to them (per channel) and the sound quility is very nice. oh and the door speakers are empty that was a PO hack job, i plan on replacing the door panels someday. and during the summer i run half doors.

speeker placing

I just went through the same problems that you are going through. I ended up getting some 6.5 inch marine (boat) speekers for the back by Polk Audio. I beeing a welder by trade built some awsome speeker boxes:o that fit in the rounded corner behind the back part of the roll bar. Made them out of alum. treadbrite. Then mounted some small speeker to the lip of the dash. I banked off my radio hole and put my stereo in a counsil. I will try to get some pics. tomorrow.

Jerry, where did you find them. I've tried a few places this last week, to replace the ones in my 45 that have finally died, and now I can't find em ANYWHERE!:frown:

Well all be damned... after searching all over the net all I can figure is that they have been discontinued

I bought them from a buddy of mine that has a local car stereo shop, I'll see if he has any in stock. I got them about a year ago, maybe he bought a bunch of them.

Get the Bose 101. They are 4 ohm speakers and will work great. You should look to pay about 80-100 on ebay plus shipping.

I should get pics of mine, but I put some 6x9s in the same location. The difference is I have an Aqualu tub and there's a perfect space back there to mount them, but you need to build up a fiberglass enclosure or some such for really good sound.

I have small tweets mounted only with double sided tape on the dash. High frequency sound is directional, so you only need the tweets up front for the rap around effect. Low freqs from the rear are okay.

IMO the listening environment for these rigs is thoroughly compromised (I'm a DIY audiophile at home...), so there is no need to spend a lot of money on stereo equipment--especially when you've got a diesel. But that's just me...

I have a cheap 'marine' head unit in a Tuffy console and it's great (remember the cowls on 40s tend to leak and kill things in the dash). 6x9s are cheap marine speakers too that I painted black for stealth and ugliness so peeps would be less likely to rip them off when I don't have my hardtop on.

Last thing: try to get a head unit with WEATHER BAND. Very handy for getting the latest weather report while out on the trail/camping etc. Might even save your life.
